PHUKET: A 34-year-old woman was impaled by a steel rod protruding from a power pole in a motorbike accident on Wichit Songkram Rd in Kathu in the first hour of this morning (May 13).

Lt Adisorn Juhong of the Kathu Police was called to the scene, on Wichit Songkram Rd northbound between Kathu Municipality and the Kathu Shrine, at about a half past midnight.

Police together with rescue workers from Kathu Municipality arrived at the scene to find Khanuengnit Onoaun, 34, still attached to the power pole, impaled through her upper chest by a steel rod that electrical workers use to climb the pole when carrying out repairs.

Horrible.

But even without a rod, hitting a pole "riding at speed" and "may have fallen asleep" can end bad.

At about half past midnight I can only guess she was going home from her work-shift.

Power pole gets it again but this time fought back.

It wasn't developed by the same nation that started the whole mess, it was developed by a private company.

so far 500k have registered for a jab in bkk.

it was leaked yesterday, that astrazeneca ha production problem and they can do max 3mln in June. The figures will also probably be lower for the next months, below planned 10mln.

yes, there are some spare 3mln sinovac, but that's for the whole country

They were carrying out repairs at midnight - 1 am? Or were too lazy to remove the rod when it wasn't needed? There are some countries where such neglect would result in a massive lawsuit. But in Thailand absolutely no-one will be held responsible.

Your outrage is a bit misplaced.

The woman hit a power pole at speed. There is no good outcome for this.

There are countless immovable objects in the world for unlucky drivers to collide with.

Better that vehicles of all types should only be allowed to operate in open deserts or salt flats. There is no doubt that even then people will find a way to die.

The world is hard and humans are soft.

She is not dead:

"She was rushed to Vachira Phuket Hospital with the rod still through her chest.

...

“At this stage, I have not received any update of Ms Khanuengnit’s condition from the hospital. I will call to check soon.” Lt Adisorn said.

“We will question her about the incident after she is discharged from the hospital.” he said.

The guys that left the Metal there should be hauled up in front of the Beak.

Nobody considers safety at all in their Work, and thats why we have all these kind of terrible accidents.

Agreed jeez even someone distracted while walking could easily go head first into this rod. Foot path is completely blocked by flower pots.1620877439_4-org.jpg.84750bb3b393e8571bdd33d56cb3a7d6.jpg

When things go wrong and impact with an immovable object is unavoidable many of us would rather that immovable object did not have ‘steel rods’ sticking out of it.

What could have been bruises and a good old fashioned ‘winding’ is now impalement by a metal rod because ‘someone’ else was lazy and careless.

I would argue that Bangkok Barry’s comment is vey well placed.

Next time it could be you....  perhaps on a motorcycle you hit an open drain where a drain-cover is not replaced after someone has done some work (its happened numerous times here). The lack of accountability has a multitude of knock-on-effects which ultimately impact us all, from the risk of being electrocuted in a shopping mall, on the beach etc etc...  to truck brake failure because no maintenance was carried out.

And again, as long as the roads are not patrolled, and drivers have no fear of consequences for their actions, this is so far inevitable. Even some farangs think that this is a license to do whatever they want. But consequences for driving fast in Thailand exist, for all...
