Research on mixed use of Sinovac and AstraZeneca vaccines to be conducted at Chulalongkorn University

The Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology of Chulalongkorn University’ Faculty of Medicine is to launch a research on the mixed use of Sinovac and Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccines, to be followed by human trials.

 

Head of the centre, Dr. Yong Poovorawan, said in his Facebook post today (Sunday) that the centre will present the research project today and seek funding from the National Research Office, adding that the research will be very useful in case a person develops undesirable side effects after receiving one type of vaccine and wants a second dose of a different type, or in case there is a shortage of one particular type.

 

He said that it has been reported that immune response has increased in several people, who developed side effects after receiving the first dose of Sinovac and were given the second dose of AstraZeneca (AZ).

Intentent to research something means that they are considering it, at least as an option, based on information that they have on availability.

 

Future headline:

 

Research indicates that mixing Sino-pharma/vac/stuff and AZ, leads to increased efficacy, and whiter teeth.

 

Dr Yong Poovorawan, chief of the Center of Excellence in Clinical Virology at Chulalongkorn University, posted on his Facebook page that mixing vaccine works.

 

COVID Cocktails now on the menu.

I'm not sure I like where this is going.

 

First there was no vaccine, then there was only the Chinese vaccine. Then they were stretching 10 doses to make 12 doses. Then, 16 weeks between doses.

 

Now, they want to mix and match different vaccines.

 

Let's hope the private hospitals bail the government out of this mess by offering a professional solution, because Mr. P and his posse of clowns are clearly incapable.

I was listening to CBS news from the USA  and they announced that GUAM is doing  vaccine tours, or offers.

If you wealthier expats are looking for the US made vaccines, well maybe check into their offerings, and stop

waiting for the Thai Government to eventually get you your Chinese shots.

I do believe Guam is still requiring a quarantine.  Alaska is offering jabs to anyone on arrival at the airport.  Met a guy yesterday who's leaving shortly with his wife to do this.  And then tour around a bit in that state.

 

I'm headed to the US in 2 weeks for our Pfizer jabs.  Definitely not going to wait around here.  No fun and who knows when the better jabs will be available?

I think you pretty much nailed it.  The conflict of interests are so immense that any scientific research of this kind published in Thailand should come under serious scrutiny. 

I'll question any Thai-based "scientific" research regarding vaccine efficacy of Sinovac and AZ or the combination of the two unless peer reviewed internationally.  There simply is too much pressure which can be exerted by the owner of Siam BS on academic research institutions, or for that matter even by the stakeholders in the CP group.  I wish it wasn't so. AZ should never have placed themselves in that position, but, here we are! 
And regarding Thai research? Take the recent Thai academic study from Chulalongkorn University showing "both the AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines were highly effective in boosting immune responses against the new coronavirus"1 at a time when the United States FDA hasn't approved either under 'emergency use authorization' (EUA) and the US president is literally 'giving away' all the AZ doses in the US to foreign countries. 
Also AZ has widely varying efficacies (62% to 90%)2 as well as Sinovac (65% to 91.25%)3 depending on the studies.

Who do you believe especially if Thai studies come out at the high-end of efficacy?  Coincidence?  Time for international peer-reviews imho.

But do they give the first jab when you arrive in Guam, so that the time in quarantine is part of the space between jabs?

 

Dr Yong should also test the effect of the other approved vaccines as a second on top of either Sinovac or AZ.

Not all governments do. But the governments in the larger, more technically-advanced countries tend to do so because they prefer to rely on their own data, analysed by their own scientists, rather than being dependent on someone else.

Report in today's 'Australian' says tests are well under way with mixing vacs, but still early stages on results. Early indication is that AZ + Pfizer produces greatly improved protection against catching the virus.

Mixing vaccines like this is a well-established practice known as "heterologous prime-boost." 

 

It's no surprise they're trying it with Covid vaccines, especially with the concerns that variants might be able to evade specific vaccines.

 

The principle behind it is that the different vaccines each stimulate the immune system in a slightly different way, leading to better overall protection.

 

There are several other vaccine types where this has been tried, with encouraging results.

I am sure that there may be benefits from mixing vaccines. However the cynic in me suggests that this may be being driven by a dawning awareness that when second doses fall due, no-one has any idea which brand of gunk they will be able to lay their paws on!
