The wife and I opened separate bank accounts at the Pink bank (GSB). 'Farang are not allowed to have the phone app'...

Recommended Posts

I use the MyMo App from GSB. But I used the yellow book for open the account there. I not use this bank a lot, but the app works for far. I am member since about 2 years with that bank.

So at least 2 years ago there was no problem for a foreigner to open an account and also to use the Mobile App "MyMo"

But yes, the K-Bank app is much better...

Most of the scams I have ever read about involve mobile phone banking. They never seem to involve home based computer banking. I decided many years back to avoid phone banking and computer banking on my Thai bank accounts. I see no reason to change my position.

K-bank needs to be activated using wifi before you can use the app in 4g or 5g mode.  Yes the bank can do it for you, but you can also use the KBank ATM to register and add features as well.

Strange, for me it was the other way around. It had to be activated using data before I could use with wifi.

And back in the day, before people had iPhones and mobile apps, Bangkok Bank wouldn't activate the internet banking facility without a work permit. It seemed absurd at the time.

I guess it takes a bit of time for some banks to come around. I doubt GSB will ever come around, I think I tried contacting them once on about some kind of joint account and it was difficult to communicate.

Probably more of the old 'try another branch' mantra than any rules about having a WP?

Back around 2005, I opened a Bangkok Bank account at their main Pattaya branch with a significant deposit, no WP while on a visa-exempt entry. The online banking was enabled by filling in and submitting a form at the bank and waiting for login details by post. When their smartphone app came out, it was a simple download and registration job.

Correction. There are branches of banks in Thailand that really want nothing to do with foreigner.
Find a different branch of the bank.

Vote with your feet and change the bank - to hell with this racism in this country of clowns with a serious identity crisis marred with inferiority complex second to none!

When I opened BKK Bank account Chiangmai the lady did it on my phone as well. Bank sent her computer a password, she activated the account gave me back the phone and then I had to put in my password and PIN number.

Moved to Sattahip, opened another account here and was no issue, just added the account to my app myself, I'm 68 and kind of computer tech challenged about half the time...

There are as many different sets of rules as their are branches in the banking business in this country. If a bank starts to give you the run around - can't do this and that because you are a foreigner- walk away. I had this a few years ago with Kasikorn Bank. I wandered around the Mall for  20 minutes, had a cup of coffee at Amazon (always guaranteed to have a pretty girl behind the counter), walked into Bangkok Bank and opened a savings account with all the bells and whistles straight away. Went back into Kasikorn Bank, asked the chap who had dealt with me there to transfer all my money to my new account. He did so, looking like a bulldog chewing a wasp! I smiled at him, snapped the ATM card, asked him to close the account and went for another cup of coffee.

Maybe today Bangkok Bank would be awkward and Krung Thai Bank oblige. It is just the way they are.

  1. Governments have absolutely no business being in any business, let alone banking!! The first banks to go bust in any crisis are the state owned ones because their deposits are suborned by politicians. You only have to take the poor old Krung Thai bank. Yes, its got a stock market listing but the government still owns a controlling stake in it. I have been here since 1987 and it has been recapitalised 3 times because it has gone broke. Every picture tells a story. Same as Thai International. This airline should be a crown jewel but state control has led it to being a dumping ground for the idle kids of powerful, connected families. Overmanning, over pay, you name it. TG has it. With hugely bigger overheads like wages etc., Cathay and Singapore Air can make good profits. Why can't TG? Privatise ALL government owned businesses.

Unlike private banks and mortgage companies behind the GFC right? Yup, socialism for the rich, austerity to pay for the mess for the rest of us suckers right?

Not to mention other businesses that go bust and then fall back on state cash to keep them afloat after 'CEO's have frittered away entire fortunes, used the benefits of the societies who educated their staff and provided their infrastructures, then refused to pay a smidgen of tax ... yeah go back too Ayn Rand mate ... by the way she wound up on the social begging for Medicare ...

It was real funny one time in an interview with the AmCham chair in Germany one time I'll never forget. He enthused about how great it was to do business in good ol' Joimanee, well educated and trained staff, great infrastructure, good government support, low corruption levels etc... but far too much tax! 555 What a joke, he just couldn't make the connection between the two.

Plenty of well run businesses in government hand. BA was sold off AFTER it became profitable (and after writing off all the taxpayer money in Concord) ... why? Why would anyone sell off a profitable business?

Norway has built up a brilliant sovereign wealth fund with Statoil (state owned oil company).

UK spaffed the country's oil against the wall by selling it off to pol friends ... Not a penny left now and guess what, they want the taxpayer to pay for the cleanup.

Are you a billionaire? Your position only makes sense then. Otherwise if you're just a John Doe like me, your position makes NO sense at all.

Yes my wife's mymo app was down for 4 full days after their forced update a few days ago. Very poor handling on GSB side, OP you're not missing out on much without mymo.

Yes, agreed - I’m pretty impressed with the kasikorn app - before they stepped up a notch I had a app for PEA, scan water bill,, app for 3bb, etc. Everything is now replaced by the k+ - even when you book a flight now, a notification comes from the bank app, press the popup and pay, so easy.

The mymo app seems basic in comparison (not that I pay close attention)

I've had online banking with Kbank since 2004. Their mobile App is super too. Very easy.

Sorry for thread drift... do you have to have a Thai number for this to work? (sending you sms's etc to do banking) or do they push notification via the app?

Actually that's a very good question. I don't know as I mostly use the web browser system for making payments etc. and that does need a Thai number and SMS code. Sometimes use the K+ app for QR code payment and no SMS needed on that. I would expect that a Thai number is needed to set up the app or add payees but not needed to confirm a transfer (the payees I have setup for a long time) and can't remember if a text was actually needed to add them. Maybe others can advise.

Thanks. I managed to open a Bank account before apps were popular and I have a code I can put in on a browser. They asked me to transfer to the app, but when I asked them about Thai number and sms (they would send one time passwords to confirm a transaction), they said that's how they would do it and they wouldn't send to an overseas number. So I still have the older browser and code system and it works fine.

f you don't have a work permit, K bank don't want to know

I went to open an a/c with a few weeks ago, & after the initial "foreigner mai dai" nonsense, & my wife speaking with her, it was deemed ok.

However, I didn't proceed with them as they were generally unhelpful - or maybe just didn't know about the different interest rates.

Anyone know which banking app allows international transfers . I know scb app allows but only for Thai nationals , not foreign account holders .

I use the DeeMoney app to transfer funds from Thailand to UK. Next business day service. Easy setup and, when I opened it a couple of years back, no need for WP or offfice visit. All done via mobile and OTP's with passport scan for ID proof. I fund the transfers from my SCB account via the QR function on their app.

Very easy and works just fine. Not sure what limits DM impose as have only sent smallish amounts - less than Bt50k per transaction.

Exchange rates and fee, plus ease of use, seem superior to the main Thai banks.
