Online and Social Media Abuse

The recent 3 penalty misses by English coloured players has spawned some evil online racial abuse . Whilst I may criticise the selection of penalty takers the colour of skin is never an issue , however there has been some cruel online posts on popular social media platforms that are now being investigated by the UK police . Theses popular medias continue to give the posters anonymity and they hide behind their keyboards Not only is there racial abuse but also bullying towards young people who in many cases end up self harming or suicide .

  This is a global problem where in some heavily censored countries , anonymity is the only way the general public can safely give their opinions and speak out but in free countries where freedom of speech is allowed , maybe it's time to have your identity shown or be traceable and accountable . The media companies say they do not support any form of discrimination or bullying yet the disgusting posts continue to be published . It is possible to control the content of  posts as demonstrated by the  Thai Visa Forum , so why are the major media companies not doing the same ? no excuses because the technology is there to proof read , edit or delete despicable discriminating posts . 

I feel safe contributing on this site but do not belong to any other social media sites for security reasons .   I welcome others opinions as there are bound to be opposing views .

There is racism all around the world the UK is one the countries where it can be protected about and bring it to people's attention.

They have moderators and like us rely on reports too. There membership would be impossible to Police effectively due to its sheer size, that said they do react quite quickly given that size if reported.

"They" ( the authorities)  can already track down and trace anyone if they want to,  are you suggesting that everyone  should  have to disclose their full names and addresses  for the whole world to see  just in case they make  a comment that someone somewhere thinks is offensive

Yes , traceability at the moment is just about possible by way of deep and long efforts . Probably what I am advocating is that the free world can sign up via a basic personal account that is not viewable to the general audience but is easily revealed to the media companies who can then take appropriate actions .

Indeed another question could be  why do we need VPNs or why is there a dark side in the net ?

I was quoting from a TV debate , maybe a vpn was involved and some vpn providers will not divulge your I.D. but there was a case 2 or 3 years ago in the U.S.A. where the F.B.I. took a provider to court to get important client info and the provider spilled the beans

And that's where this specific problem lays.!

Most probably you will never be able to eliminate racism and all the other 'isms', but hiding behind anonymity can be stopped, all that is needed is for the providers of these platforms require users to be identified.

Sort of, except black and white are shades not colors. It's a bit of a grey area.

 

One aspect of all this intrigues me .

 

Suppose you had a 1 meter square box. Into that box you poured 1000 white ping pong balls and 1000 black ones. You then closed the box and shook it up for several minutes. When you reopen the box what do you see ? You see all the balls , regardless of color, intermingled and spread quite evenly.

 

Now repeat the experiment but this time put a partition in the middle of the box and poor the white balls to one side and the black to the other. Close box , shake and open to look inside. The balls remain divided. 

 

Which box looks more ' cohesive ' and structuraly stronger ? The box with the partition looks like it could fracture down the middle.

 

Now look at the world today compared to say 5 years ago.

Society looked more like the first box. We were all mixed up and although each ball/or person had a different personality and leanings , it was still part of the structure / society.

 

An aspect of all this well meaning wokeism and knee taking is that it is moving towards the situation in the second box rather than the first. By putting a magnifing glass on race , society is being slowly divided into two camps. With us or against us. Black or white. The grey area is diminishing.

For this reason I think the political correctness we are seeing now is counter productive.

 

If we look at Thailand pre Thaksin the situation was more like the first box. Then along came the PAD and the military , who, unable to garner enough votes at the ballot box , developed a  divide and conquer strategy.

You other loved the institution and wore yellow or you were a worthless unpatriotic citizen that does not deserve the vote.

 

The result has been that the people are now much more divided into two camps than they were before and they both hate each others guts.

 

This , I believe is where things will end up if society allows a minority of woke people to divide society on the race issue.

 

There will always be racists and bigots. But dividing people by constantly putting a magnifing glass on the very thing that should be diminished will, in my opinion , prove counter productive.

There are two modes of though for two types of people.

One type of person wants the government to control all speech.  They welcome totalitarianism with open arms and actively appeal to the ruling class to not only limit speech, but to throw people into prison for saying the wrong words.
This form of governance works well for these types of people - until?  Until it turns on them.  What you consider to be 'safe speech' today may land you in prison/labor camp/gulag tomorrow.
First they came for the communists, but I wasn't a communist so I didn't say anything......
....Then they came for me, and there was no one left to speak for me.
Totalitarianism eats those it controls.

Then there are people like myself who believe in completely open speech with the most leeway and the absolute least restrictions.  People should self-monitor and self-censor.  If you don't like what others say, don't listen.  You also have the option to criticize the verbal abuse on social media yourself.  If racist speech was universally punished, Anutin should be in jail for his outbursts against people of European decent.  I think Anutin is an ***, but he's free to rant up to the point of instigating violence against farangs.  That's the limit.  That's the equivalent of yelling "FIRE" in a crowded theater.  Except for those outliers, free speech should remain completely free.
For those triggered, repeat my childhood mantra:
"Sticks and stones may break my bone but name will never hurt me."   We understood that way back in kindergarten.
And I don't want a totalitarian form of government repressing the population.

Instead of over policing and over moderating everything that is written somewhere, maybe people should just stop being so darn over sensitive. You know, the way they used to be not too long ago, in the pre snowflake era.

 

When I went to primary school, we didn't have any "social media" yet, but we abused each other relentlessly. I don't think it caused any long-term problems.

The really sad aspect of all this is the number of people who are out and out racists.......not the fact they can post anonymously.

 

Education is the key.......NOT in school, but by parents (ha, I hear you say).

 

My kids had anti-racism drummed into them from day one.......but as a teacher of Army children, I also experienced the other side......racism being drummed into children from day one.....it is frightening.

Big tech social/media is the root of many serious issues, especially among young school age victims, causing numerous suicides???? Big tech/social media has developed this  “click like” mentality causing people ( especially the youth), to feel like losers if they don’t have huge followings???????? Peer pressure has become the devil! Big tech/social media make millions on every click and millions through ads geared to our youth???????? Big tech/social media can stop the racial abuse if they want, they can stop unverified accounts and force these cowards into the open or more likely to disappear, but that would eat into their huge profits! The racial abusers  must have their anonymous platforms taken away or it will just get worse????????Bottom line is that Big Tech/Social Media should be held accountable and take the pressure off kids and get rid of anonymous racial abuse????

No I don't agree  with that  its like saying the post office should be held accountable if someone sends a racist letter   or the phone company should be accountable because someone phoned me and called me nasty names in the middle of the night.

Kids have always and always will have pressures foist on them  just like we do as adults its up to us as individuals to choose the correct path

The issue with your comparisons that there is a huge gulf between letters and anonymous online abuse.

A letter is rarely anonymous, one person sees it, its is addressed to a private individual. 

 

The same can be said of phone calls, they could be anonymous, but someone has to obtain the phone number to begin with. 

 

The world and technology has evolved, the norms that you are familiar with no longer exist.

 

 

Abuse on social medial should not be tolerated. This is not about ‘freedom of speech’ because those who engage in such abuse are already abusing their freedoms, those freedoms should be revoked. 

 

I agree with we all should be free to live in a ‘free, fair and healthy thriving society’ to do so we can’t ignore those who would seek to destroy such a society with their poison. 

 

The hyperbolic leap to suggest that controlling online abuse is the similar to the rights abuses against freedom of speech in countries such as North Korea and China is wholly incorrect - there is no similarity between wanting to abolish online abuse and government sanctioned limits on freedom of speech.

 

 

People should be responsible and accountable for what they publicly post and forums and social medial platforms can and do police these outlets, and so they should for there is a small minority of society disrupting the well meaning masses.

Don't take instructions off kids . 

Don't worry , you cant click "likes" on FB and there will be no repercussions .
