Just built a new computer around Windows 10 Pro + Ryzen 5 3400g processor/GPU.

Earlier this week Microsoft released an update that broke the 3400g internal graphics.

Black screen after graphics driver loaded, still worked in 'safe mode'.

Tried a clean install of Win 10 Pro, all fine until in windows 10, 'installing new graphics driver' message pops up then black screen.

No fix, had to install an old PCi-e graphics card to get the PC working again.

 

Old computer Gigabyte Sniper a88x + AMD Athlon processor.

Worked for 7 years with a 4pin CPU power plug in the 8pin CPU power socket.

Suddenly the 2x 12V power pins melted the plastic in the 4 pin power plug.

So I've trimmed back the socket to remove all the burnt plastic and polished the 2 burned pins.

No other signs of damage to the mobo, no burning around the solder on the mobo.

Waiting for a new 8 pin PSU plug to arrive, 14bht from China, 40bht from Bangkok ...... looks like China will arrive first. 

Alternative fix, solder the 12V cpu power wires direct to the mobo.

 

 

Have you updated the chipset drivers directly from Ryzen/AMD?, also download the lastest video driver and install it. You should delete the GPU driver that Microsoft installed and download the new drivers from AMD for the type of chipset and GPU you have, as they are usually the latestUsually microsoft has older drivers than the ones

How would I do that with a black screen?

I'm sure windows 10 will have a new update out to fix it.

 

I guess I can download the AMD drivers, pull out the graphics card, restart in safe mode, install the latest drivers then restart.

Maybe I'll try that in a week or two.

Even safe mode is 3 menu's deep and at least 2 restarts to get to.

Have you got a decent surge protector? I ask as in the second case, the burning will be through too much voltage (Gigabyte boards are quite sensitive to surges. I've had many blow up on me).

 

In the first case, I have seen no reports of the June update breaking Ryzen chips - the May one did cause problems but was withdrawn. The fix there was to get into safe mode and select start up repair to uninstall the dodgy driver. Alternatively create a bootable USB if you can't get into start up repair. The July update patches were released yesterday (July 13th) and its a big one with 117 patches,  13 for critical bugs, 4 of which are already being exploited (typical of Microsoft).

 

If you want to try a safer set up, install Linux Mint and set up a Virtual Machine for Windows. It will work faster than native W10 and when a patch breaks things, it doesn't cripple the machine.

I'm thinking it was corrosion on the 4pin cpu plug that caused the melting.

The wires and board were all undamaged, and the only damage to the socket was melted plastic from the plug. Wasn't a surge as I could smell burning plastic for a couple of weeks previous.

 

Got an 8 pin plug coming in the post.

SATA cables, fan power wires, fibre optic, network cables ........

Mouse USB, Keyboard USB, phone charger cables, Xbox PSU.

Almost every wire in the living room has repaired wires with insulation tape wrapped around.

Windows 10 says it all, I'd sooner swallow razor blades. Never a problem with free Linux, and it's polite enough to let me choose when I want to update.

Very impressive post but haven't got a fxxxing clue what any of it means.Right now i feel so old.

And I have exactly the opposite experience. No problems whatsoever with W10 and updates, cannot get Linux installed on my relatively new PCs.

How to Stop Windows 10 from Automatically Updating Device Drivers Using Group Policy

 

For Windows 10 Pro users, you can also turn off automatic driver updates in Windows 10 by using Local Group Policy Editor. Check the steps below.

 

Step 1. You can press Windows logo key and R key on the keyboard, and input gpedit.msc and hit Enter to open Local Group Policy Editor.

 

Step 2. Next you can expand folders from the left column: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update.

Swallowing razor blades probably isn't that bad really but when they exit sounds like no fun at all. Win 10 Pro you can decide when you want updates installed as well.

Windows 10 Pro ....... clean install,

It loads the 'black screen' graphics driver within 10 seconds of windows starting for the first time.

Good luck entering anything in that time.

I kid you not.  Move to Linux and then run your Window 10 in a virtual machine (Oracle Virtualbox).

I just did that a few months back after fighting with being unable to upgrade to 20H2 for close to two months.  I rebuilt the computer multiple times and then just gave up.

Bought an SSD drive, installed an Ubuntu version, installed Virtualbox and the whole thing now runs fine.  The only thing I need Win10 for is my tax software.  Other than that I could give a damn about it.

What make and model of PC and what version of "Linux.".  There are a ****load of different version out there.

Any possibility of installing Windows 11?  Perhaps that does not have the graphics driver issue.

 

Though I hear W11 is very fussy about the hardware.

Damn Brit treat yourself to a new computer.That board looks ancient & beat to death. Anyway with newer cases there isn't a chance to have a rat or a rabbit eating your cables & PC board. It must be a test bench style open case. I just sold an Intel 7th gen RBG(not that that matters with a newer graphic card for 10,000 baht. Really not to be rude or anything insulting but that board is compromised Do you live in Pattaya? If you take it to Pattaya2u in Com city they will get it running for 300 baht. If you are stuck in blue screen after  a reinstall you probably are going to need a pro to straighten it out. It is not worth banging your head trying what you may never be able to figure it out. worse case scenario is they will migrate your data onto a new install on a donor computer & then reload all your drivers(the correct ones) and sort it out. I ran into a similar problem ion 2005 & I build computers(have for a log time) this will be the easiest fix instead of guessing why it wont see the card. It could even be a bad board since the parts are chewed up & you had voltage spikes. But whatever you do get a new case if rats or whatever are getting in it Most new modern cases are rodent proof unless they can eat metal & then you got a whole notha problem.

I have 2 computers

The 'beat up' Gigabyte Sniper a88x with AMD A10 running win 7.

The new Gigabyte Aorus Elite b450m with a Ryzen 5 3400g running win 10 pro.

Neither of them have any data, that's all kept on a Zyxel Nas326 and a Zyxel Nas310 on my network.

 

They're both essentially front ends for Kodi.

Torrents are handled directly by the NAS.

As you said. Coudn't you install the problematical graphics card, boot to safe mode, uninstall the Windows driver, then reinstall the latest drivers. Then do a normal boot and see if that fixes it?

That is  a thought if your other computer has a compatible graphics card try putting it in & see if Nvidia or AMD (whatever brand it is) will automatically search for the new drivers. Might work. I didn't realize you had a second deck.

I upgraded my desktop a couple of months ago, new SSD, motherboard, CPU etc.

Put a USB stick with MX Linux preloaded in one of the USB ports, and away I went.

No idea what your problem is.

I just have to wonder at the sanity of people that shell out big bucks for an OS that is under constant attack by hackers, when there is a zero cost alternative that isn't.

I suppose if I was a high-end gamer, Windows 10 may have some useful features. I'm not, LibreOffice, and Firefox as the browser is all I need.

I just ordered my new notebook, they last me around five years. I order CTO from Dell (Configure to Order). This is a very corporate thing to do and takes 60 to 90 days, but I get PRECISELY the spec I want and the money is focused where I want. There is no point in buying an off the shelf notebook with an OEM copy of Windows that I'll just delete upon delivery. The money saved there goes on more RAM, for example.

 

There is absolutely nothing, nothing at all that Windows can do that Linux can't. Nothing. OTOH, there are advantages to Linux that Windows cannot compete with. So yes, I agree with you, it's beyond me why Windows remains dominant. The Sheeple Factor I guess.

 

Don't get me started on iTards. I have a friend that is an iTard. When I asked him what his iPhone can do that my Android can't, he said in all sincerity that it could edit text and send emails. I must have laughed for a week and I never let him forget it. I hope he reads this (hey Blue!). I guess it's no coincidence he be a WindowsLicker.

They've cut the 3BB fibre cable so many times the tech gave me his private phone number so I could call him direct. Nice guy, seems happy enough with the 100bht 'tip' I give him for turning up quickly.
