Bangkok Governor Assawin Kwanmuang said today (Sunday) that he is confident that 70% of the population of the capital will have received at least one dose of vaccine by the end of this month.

The governor observed the vaccination service at the Bang Khae branch of The Mall today, one of the 25 non-hospital vaccination facilities operated by City Hall.

The free vaccination service resumed for a second day today, following temporary closure due to a vaccine shortage, said the governor, adding that City Hall has been allocated 750,000 doses of vaccine by the Ministry of Public Health, with the first batch of 175,000 doses received.

and if they don't you will resign ?

oh that's right it's not actually your reponsibility is it so why even make such a statement - you will just blame the failure on someone else

and one dose is not enough anyway

During lockdown all of these pontificators must have been watching Aladdin on repeat. They think they have a magic lantern they can wish upon to achieve their farcical projections. But with a total lack of accountability why not reach for beyond the sky and then just come up with a new pie in the sky statistic when the old one fails. That's much more fun than looking at the reality of failure to advance society even before Covid. Lack of investment in education + Bloated and overly complex visas and hostility to foreigners has left Thai people without the skills and opportunities to advance in the modern world. Had they invested more heavily in STEM maybe they could've actually produced some leading mRNA vaccines instead of the excuse festival that was Siam bio.

When you have to wait for 12 weeks after getting your first shot of AstraZeneca you can understand why so many people are and will be dead.  Why so damn long to get that second shot.  For me waiting 12 weeks is like a lifetime.   If they would have planned better they could have purchase AstraZeneca last year and not waited so long.  After all the country really owns the maker of AstraZeneca here in Thailand.  There are people here who could really do more to increase the supply here and screw those other countries.

good news for bangkok citizens, what about the rest of the country?

My thoughts exactly BKK is only a city not the bloody country ☹☹☹☹

A troll post denigrating and calling Chinese vaccines useless and referring to it with derogatory names has been removed.

Whilst it may be less effective in certain cases ie Delta strain it is by no means useless. At the end of the day this is a Thai government sponsored vaccine and the forum and or yourself can get in trouble for comments like this so stop it.

Governor of Bangkok - I'm never quite sure how much territory that covers: Is that Greater Bangkok (c18 million)? or Lesser Bangkok (c8 million)? or somewhere in between? Or just approximate?

The Bangkok governor's legal authority only extends within the city itself, not the metropolitan area (since the surrounding provinces all have their own governors). Most people seem to think that the city's population is in the range of 8 million, but I've read that the registered population is only around 5.5 million.

Only one dose is not Vaccinated.

Therefore there will be little, if not any Immunity, specially if the people have been Inoculated with Sinovac.

Only the Authorities are believing this Tosh.

I'm in a deep red zone outside of Bangkok, I still haven't had my first jab yet...

They had a walk-in inoculation drive for two days near me last week for anyone over the age of 60..

I got turned away for being a foreigner.... how nice is that?

Did you really expect anything else ?

Nope... and not really disappointed, I'll wait for all the Sinovac to be used up...

later this year when I eventually get recognised I might get some Pfizer. Moderna,

70% of the population! Does this include all the foreigners, the legal and non-legal workers from the neighboring countries? Does this include the part of the population under 18, which accounts for roughly 28% of the population? Since we all know, and the governor of Bangkok might know, this simple math means that around 100% of the eligible population will get vaccinated by the end of August. Possible? Not quite, unless the FDA approves Sinovac for children quickly. So, will this be considered as fake news? Most likely not. But in fact it is.

He is the Governor of Bangkok Province that is composed of 50 Districts/Townships organized under the Bangkok Metropolitan Area of which one township is Bangkok city. So great hopes for Bangkok District but what's in store for the remaining 49 Districts?

I am confident I will win the Powerball lottery this week.  I will let you know how that works out.

As for 70% of Bangkok residents... What is a resident?  Millions of Thais work in Bangkok in normal times, but they are not residents there.  They come from other provinces for seasonal or temporary work.   Will the officials require IDs with Bangkok addresses?

Yes, indeed he did, the man who said it was in-charge of proceedings at the front of the queue who seemed to be doing all the directing, he even left his microphone switched on so everyone could hear.

At the time there were around 500 people in the queue and inside a make-shift marquee .

Made to walk away feeling a fool in front of everyone!!!!

Does the Governor know the difference between inoculation and fully vaccinated ? One jab of ANY vaccine in the world will not fully protect you from the Delta variant . AZ, Pfizer and Moderna give you a small amount of protection after one jab. One jab of the China vaccines are close to nothing against Delta. Full vaccination is 2 jabs. Does the Governor really think he will reach herd immunity with 70% of Bangkok getting one jab? If he does many people will get sick and die

One jab is not fully vaxxed, as others have said already. In terms of Covid, though, the whole theory of 'herd immunity' at 70 or any other per cent is just that--a theory. As variants continue to develop, I can't see herd immunity happening anywhere.

This was done in Canada as well when the period between doses was initially set at 16 weeks. The intent was to make best use of the limited supply of vaccines to get first shots into as many arms as possible. Though a single shot does not give maximum immunity, it does provide some protection and probably reduces the number of cases that become severe. In Canada the results have been good, though the supply eventually got a lot better and now most people have received two shots. The time between shots for those that remain has been reduced to six weeks. Many countries with successful vaccination campaigns have done something similar.

The main problem in Thailand is the abject failure to get an adequate supply of vaccines, not the perfectly reasonable policy of extending the period between doses.
