Popular Post William C F Pierce
With many years of reading Thai Visa [Asean Now].I recently came across an article in regard to Retirement Visas in Thailand. The article said you renew your Visa each year. Then after 3 you can get permanent residency. This is the first time I have come across this. Maybe Ubon Joe can enlighten me on this and as to whether you need to still do an annual visa each year. 4

Peterw42
OP, can you quote or link to the article ? Three years on a retire extension does not qualify you for Permanent Residency. Three years continuous stay (on other visa) and three years minimum income and paying tax are some of the PR requirements. You cannot work on a retire visa/extension, so you cannot show the required income/tax. I you do get PR, then you dont need to do annual visa/extensions. Nojohndoe
It used to be said that after 3 consecutive extensions of stay a person was eligible to apply for residency. Having attained residency status allows for application for a work permit rather than it be a prerequisite. 3

Popular Post ubonjoe
There is a long outdated order from 2003 that allowed it but nobody was ever able to do it. Just forget about it. 4

Popular Post SomchaiCNX
On paper you can get it when you have worked and paid taxes for 3 years. After 25 years I still don't have it as they (immigration) make their own rules up along the way. Married, adult children (now) , company, work permit etc etc. Don't mention it to much over here because experts (selfmade) will tell you that you don't know a thing. Ubonjoe is the only person I would trust on this.

To play devil's advocate, some people here on retirement extensions have high overseas income from various sources. Few pay any taxes on this, but they could. Just maybe, having been here for a number of years, paying tax on 200,000 baht a year, an application for permanent residence might be considered. The possibility would not induce me to make such an investment, but it might be possible.

It has to be tax paid on a income earned here from working with a work permit. 3
