actonion
If you travel Eastbound from Pattaya beach, chosing as an example Pattaya Klang, once you reach Foodland the roads start to go up hill from there until you reach the top of Soi Kow noi or Soi Kow talo, when it rains gravity take the rain down those hills into Pattaya City and with most of the drain covers blocked by locals Garbage it seems obvious that floods will occur because of no escape for the rain water... build more drains ? then more Garbage will cover them..i have lived in East Pattaya for 22 years i've seen the <deleted> blocking ALL the drains Make the garbage workers do their job... ...Hire road sweepers
Popular Post Kerryd
Yeah, I'm sure the rains last year and the year before were just as bad, if not worse. 2 years ago it rained so hard that the drains in my village (near the Chill Market on Soi Khao Noi) were overflowing for the first time ever. They weren't blocked, they just weren't large enough to handle the volume of water going into them. The bigger drains on Khao Noi were overflowing already so the water in the pipes from the village was getting backed up and it was over ankle deep on the main village road. I've lived in that village for 12 years now and it never did that before. Hasn't even come close to that during this year's entire rainy season. They've redone the drain pipes on Soi Khao Noi 3 times now and it still floods almost every time it rains and the soi, from the Chill Mall to the Railway Bypass, is total <deleted> from all the pisspoor "repairs" done to it and all the crappy drains they've put in. I've driven on unmaintained gravel roads that were smoother than Soi Khao Noi. They finally covered over the massive drains they were working on just east of the South Pattaya/Sukhumvit intersection (behind the Batman building). I don't think it has helped at all though. The last big, heavy rain we had a couple weeks ago saw a lot of the shops get flooded, even the ones that were "built up" to put their floors well above street level. It was over a meter deep on the soi in front of the Batman building and the water was still draining away 2 days later. Look at the massive drainage channel they have in Los Angeles (where they like to shoot a lot of movie scenes). It's actually the "Los Angeles River" but back in the late 30s there was a massive flood so the US Corp of Engineers went to work and spent the next 10 years making that concrete channel. From the movie "Grease". That's literally what they need. A huge drainage channel cutting through the city and emptying into the ocean. Maybe not quite as large as the LA version. But that will never happen. Cost too much to buy all the land and build such a beast. Especially if it went the normal route of needing to be re-tendered every couple of years as various contractors take their profits and abandon the project. Look how long it took them to do that one project on Soi Siam Country Club ! In most "Western" countries, that whole thing would have been done and dusted in a month (or less), with crews working 24/7 and doing quality work. Instead it took what, 2+ years (and lots of negative press) before they finally got it done. Same for the drain pipe project along the Railway bypass road. Remember 2 years ago when it rained so much that it flooded between the Khao Noi and Khao Talo intersections (where it normally floods) and that woman's car ended up floating through a gap in the concrete barriers. You couldn't tell where the road was and where the railway channel was. I remember the pics of the people trying to rescue the woman and they were almost neck deep in the water. And of course, all the talking heads came out to inspect the area afterwards. I remember that, at that time, the "new drainage" project that was going on in that area had been ongoing for 2 years by then (as evidenced by the pics on Google Maps). Which was long before the new rail project the Mayor mentioned was even approved. The problem is, they do a project using the lowest, cheapest estimate of what is needed instead of actually trying to do something that will work. Instead of 2 meter pipes properly bedded and covered, they go with 1 meter pipes covered in sand that washes away in the next rainstorm. Instead of a proper, concrete channel leading to the sea (i.e. along Beach Road) they plunk some giant sandbags down and cover them with sand, then make "channels" from the road across the walkway to the beach so all the water can flow freely across that sand and wash it out to sea. (I previously posted pics of the "channel" directly across from the Central Festival mall that seems purposely designed to channel the water from the road onto the sand. Someone else had posted pics from the last big rain showing the beach washed away in that exact same area.) What do they think will happen when they do such things ? (I know, I know. They don't actually "think" about it at all.)
bbko
It's common for shops and food cart vendors to sweep the dirt, sand, trash and dump food scraps, oil, filthy dish water into the nearest open drain. No wonder there's drainage problems.
Popular Post tonray
When you remove all the trees and vegetation and replace them with condos and houses...global problem. A hillside covered with vegetation can absorb 4 times the amount of rain that a bare landscape can. In Bangkok a similar problem that was made worse by filling in old khlongs for condos. On the west side of the river most of the old canals still exist and there is rarely the kind of flooding seen in east side areas such as Lad Phrao where most have been filled in and built on top.

Builders at my place used my grey water drains to dispose of leftover cement and wash their bowls and buckets into!

The big projects with international partners like the expressways and Skytrain etc get done reasonably fast. One should consider who is in charge of the budget in Pattaya. As for in "most Western countries", I know a city in a certain western country where a project that should have been completed in a year is into it's third year, causing massive traffic disruption for all that time. I certainly remember riding through water on Buakhao, going between Hellfire corner and Soi Honey.... I recall turning down soi Honey, (as it looked bad ahead), in the hope of getting to higher ground around 2nd Rd. Might be useful if Pattaya issued a map of low-lying areas! KarenBravo
One of the problems that these beach towns have, is the tides. At high tide no water drains into the sea and it just keeps building up in the town, especially if it's still raining.

Bravo, everything drains into the sea new pipes are just larger that hold the water underground so the public thinks things are working just fine but when you get heavy rain which is common and there is high tide the water can't drain fast enough so what happens when the glass is already full and one tries to put more water in it " overflows " you don't need to go to school to figure it out. Continue down the same road is to continue kicking the can down the road but of course here in Pattaya that means the leaders continue to benefit for years and for that fact nothing will ever change. Maybe a great idea when you open up Pattaya instead of moving on? how about visit Raging water Pattaya water festival floating Songthaws and motorbike turn into Jetski for transportation the economy keeps running rain or shine????? There is plenty of land get some outside help with some real educated engineers put a master plan in place by building a number of reservoirs where the rain water can be pumped, reserved and treated one can't continue to dump 90% of the rain water into the ocean.
