Voluntary inoculation of school students with Pfizer vaccine begins in Thailand

Thailand’s mass voluntary Pfizer-BioNTech vaccination campaign, for students aged 12 to 18, began today (Monday October 4th).

 

3.6 million students in this age group, or 71% of the 5 million nationwide, have received consent from their guardians for their inoculation with the US-German mRNA vaccine, following the arrival in Thailand of the first lot of 2 million doses last Wednesday. A further 28 million doses are on order and will follow. Six more million Pfizer doses are expected to arrive later this month.

 

Students in the 29 COVID-19 “dark red” provinces, from over 15,000 schools, will be the first to receive the jabs.

Just got an email from my daughters school, appointments for students with Pfizer this weekend (Phuket)

So, TOTALLY voluntary?? IF a kid and their parents decide against it...will that child be able to learn AT THE SCHOOL or will they be forced to stay home?? I NEED this question to be answered. Is the govt being deliberately unclear?

Why not speak with the school your child is attending?

Thailand has many thousands of very vulnerable people who at best have been vaccinated with a less effective vaccine and at worst nothing at all yet they choose to do their own thing again and vaccinate a group proven to be at least risk, you really couldn't make it up

And it's only the beginning... They're dreaming to vaccinate children.... starting at 3 years old.

 

The plan is for 2022.

 

The government is planning to vaccinate 6 million children age 3-11 in 2022, once there is a vaccine that is approved for use in this age group which should be "soon", the DDC's Director General Dr Opas Karnkawinpong said.

Kids maybe at least risk, but school could be an ideal breeding ground to pass on CV 19 via the kids to those elderly and vunerable people at home, who can for the best part stay reasonably isolated and safe - reasonable assumption?

I would expect the official stance and policy to be changing soon.

Unless they are awash in vaccine supply, then they should be targeting the older ones first before looking for "volunteers".

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand rolled out COVID-19 vaccines to high school students for the first time on Monday, as it seeks to boost its immunisation rate ahead of a planned school reopening next month.

 

About 88% of high school students aged 12-18 in the capital Bangkok had signed up for the vaccine, city authorities said. Nationwide, 3.6 million of more than 5 million eligible students have registered, according to official figures.

 

"I want the situation to return to normal because I want to return to school," said Puwarit Chinnaburanasophon, 16.

Thailand has vaccinated about 31% of its more than 66 million people against COVID-19 and has eased many restrictions in Bangkok, where infection numbers have declined lately.

 

It is in a rush to boost that inoculation rate, so it can safely welcome back foreign visitors following 18 months of restrictions that contributed to the collapse of its vital tourism sector.

 

Following several other countries, Thailand will administer the mRNA vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNTech in schools.

 

Bangkok's governor, Aswin Kwanmuang, hopes the required two doses can be completed by the end of October.

 

"We have high hopes that by that time, the new cases will slow down, so students can return to school again," he said.

 

Student Lalita Sawatsupron said she was a little apprehensive about the vaccine.

 

"Today I'm getting my first Pfizer vaccine shot because I just turned 15 years old, so I'm qualified. I'm quite nervous," she said.

And same day my granddaughters' high school/students were told, by SMS, their jabs are delayed but no new date.  

 

Son called her school and asked if this will delay return to class room learning. Answer 'don't know but probably yes'.

And still nothing about college kids.  I was going to have the Moderna shot I signed up for a while ago as a booster to my 2 Pfizer before I go back to the US, but now I think I'm going to move it to my son who will be moving to BKK soon for college.

All international schools in Phuket opened for in class learning yesterday, there's 4 or 5 large ones and a number of smaller ones, no jabs yet but they start at the weekend

Sorry mate but I don't agree, very many of the elderly and vulnerable are unable to isolate they live day to day and for that reason alone they should be getting the available vaccines first and especially the vaccines that are effective against delta

 

I understand what you are saying but every vaccine given to a healthy kid especially the proven Western vaccines is one that a vulnerable person cannot have

 

Kids in the main manage really well even if they get covid the vulnerable don't they deteriorate then die and those numbers worldwide confirm this, giving vaccines to healthy kids is a waste of a vaccine that could save a life and all done to pretend they are actually doing something...

One opened in Phitsanulok, apparently smaller private schools can open but have very strict protocols to be followed.

Boys at this stage are only to be given 1 due to concerns of heart inflammation following 2 shots, girls are to be given 2.

who knows about second shot for school students, he is in high school!!

This morning she was told it will be Friday. After lunch it was announced that "there is a problem getting the vaccine", so it might be next week, or maybe later...

it obviously is not “voluntary”. what does the “ appointment “ letter say ? 

any unvaxxed student wiil surely be suspended until vaxxed.

but they will wait to advise that only to only the unvaxxed.
