No change to alcohol ban at restaurants, bar closures for now in Pattaya-Chonburi Provincial Police hold meeting with Pattaya business owners

The Chonburi Provincial Police held a meeting this afternoon, November 4th, 2021, with Pattaya business owners in the hotel, restaurant, bar, service, and entertainment industry to address concerns about a continued ban on alcohol sales at restaurants and the closure of bars and entertainment venues.

 

Entertainment venues have been closed for almost seven months straight in Pattaya due to “Covid-19” concerns, according to Chonburi Provincial Police. Prior to this, venues were closed for 4 months straight in 2020 and a month earlier this year in January, giving a grand total of a year of mandated closures. According to multiple Pattaya business owners, little to no financial aid or support has been given for these closures.

 

Business owners in Pattaya have been growing increasingly frustrated over the closure, even as other areas in the country like Phuket or Krabi have been given exceptions to allow alcohol sales in restaurants. Police have continued regular raids in Pattaya, normally well known for its nightlife, to any business daring to attempt to break the rules.

It might not be easy to litigate their closure on a variety of different levels but bankrupting them it's quite a simple process. Totally passive aggressive.

 

Lots of land to sweep up in the aftermath and rebuild into the new Eastern Seaboard

And what was stopping the owner / staff calling their friendly policeman to stage a raid in which the owner gets a commission out of the 40k baht that you and your friend will be forced to pay?

Customer loyalty,  my friend knows that place so well and is on friendly terms with the owner, in fact as we were paying the bill he paid the money he owed from the last time he ate there and forgot his wallet. In our area we are know as jai dee farangs and not the cranky Thai bashing jai dam farangs. 

 

I could tell you 1st hand police/farang interaction stories that most Thai bashers here wouldn't believe but don't want to hijack this thread. Cheers.

I was thinking it might be ironic if a tourist came here vaccinated, no quarantine, but ended up packed into a jail cell after having a few drinks in a hole in the wall bar on the sly.

It would be helpful if they specified the conditions they need to allow reopening.  But, TIT so, no information forthcoming.  It's difficult to rationalize why some areas allow bars to reopen but not Pattaya.

With all the people wanting to come here , ( applied for the Thai Pass ) , Thailand does not look ' finished ' .

It is not perfect , but in a ' better ' country you would certainly pay much more for a holiday , and have some disappointments as well ...

The girls moved away from the empty bars to ' Thai friendly ' etc ... but when the bars are full again , they will be there again ...

I have little respect for the Thai government when I read this nonsense. In Bangkok where covid is a bigger problem restaurants can serve alcohol to satisfy the Hi-So Thais. Very little to do with the science of restricting covid but more to do with money and how good your connections are. I can really appreciate the anger expressed by Pattaya restaurant owners. Then on top of this we have the midget-brain falangs playing one upmanship games "I know where to drink, I have connections, I'm better than you". I am really getting bored with the situation.

Personally this was a useless meeting especially when it is called by the police!  I thought even here their job was to carry out policies, laws and mandates what the hell are they calling a meeting as to whether to open or not?

If that was the case the participants at the meeting should have just gather their donations in close doors and handed it over to them if enough we be reading a whole different outcome? ????????

Be interesting to see which businesses get the so called SHA+ approval to open,  they could be very selective when it happens with a few backhanders going into deep pockets, places like gogo bars and soi 6 ST bars might have a problem getting approved to open ....................maybe ever

Ypu can bet it will happen, but not sure how the police will handle it?

Innocent tourist comes here, not sure of all the rules, sits down for a meal and gets a beer..

If the police get heavy handed with increasing tourists it might just backfire and put people off.

The hypocrisy of allowing the music festival which brings thousands and where being seated a few feet away from each other is any safer than similar seating in  restaurant where people can go anyway BUT not have a drink. Gotta get those contracts handed out and budget shared around.

Live in Pattaya, went to Bangkok yesterday for a friends funeral. Ended up in Soi 4 at Morning/Night for a small wake. Ate food and drank beer in the SHA approved establishment without having to look over my shoulder. Came back late afternoon and straight back to the threat of getting arrested for doing exactly what I was doing a few hours earlier in a place less than 2 hours away! Crazy times!

Common sense most likely, most of the restaurants I have been to like their repeat customers to come back and spend more money as opposed to getting grassed up.
