who volunteers ?

Featured Replies

Just wondering are the Tourist police still going? i never hear of farangs nowadays joining up like they used to do in the 90's and early 2000's

I always had dreams of joining when i retired but that was a novelty idea that thankfully has fallen to the wayside

A lot of retired farangs used to join up in different areas  Chiang mai, pattaya etc but rarely hear of it now.

Does anyone here volunteer one day a week in anything wherever you are in Asia ?

I have a skype friend in the phillipines 68yo retired who volunteers everyday in a nursing home taking elderly people for walks,he enjoys it he said

I guess volunteering is a way to do something when you retire ,fill your day, meet people etc

Although in some parts of Asia eg Thailand,i believe you may need a work visa

We don’t volunteer, but every year I organise Pubcycle 20xx as appropriate, a sponsored ride to raise money for a local orphanage.  The riders are 80-90% expats, and we manage to raise enough for one or two or three weeks’ operation of the orphanage each year.  The way I see it, helping the poorest in society to get a good start is an investment for all our futures, while giving money to the Salvation Army is an insurance against my own misfortune

Not much use for foreign tourist Police volunteers in the last 18 months or so.

So very little going on but last year there was an online course followed by quit a few

foreigners.

I  used to  to  teach conversational English, on a voluntary basis, at an up country High School.  Kids were great and keen to learn. Teachers were, in the main, a bunch of drunks,   quite a lot never  came back to work after the  lunch break (booze up time)..   Gave it up eventually  in  frustration.  Sorry for the kids, but  my  nerves  were at breaking point dealing with the  stupidity of the staff.

A know of pubcrawls, where you go from pub to pub to booze up. But you guys do that on a bicycle? Dont you have many accidents with drunk participant going into traffic?

Each to their own, but personally, I would never associate myself with an organization like the Thai police by volunteering for them. Their reputation alone keeps me miles away.

...think of it in a positive way...you can help to see that foreigner in trouble or needing help gets a fair deal.

I think the ones on Walking Street liked throwing their weight around. I never saw them do anything worthwhile. Far as I'm concerned their function should have been limited to talking to tourists, and there would have been no need for the fancy uniforms.

When foreign tourists use to ask what I did as a TPV in Phuket, I would reply that my job was to protect them from the Thai Police!

Yep but don't expect them to answer their hotline. Sadly there are falangs that have liked to join them, given the opportunity, and strut their stuff. Quite pathetic IMO.

You have to ask yourself what really attracts these people to volunteer for the Thai tourist police. I don't think the majority do it to help out tourists but more for a feeling of self importance
