Thailand on Monday (December 13) reported 3,398 new COVID-19 cases, 5,467 recoveries and 23 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 3,396. Prisons: 2

▶︎ Recoveries: 5,467

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,143,181

▶︎ Total recoveries since since April 1: 2,073,900

 

Monday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,172,044 with 21,194 deaths.

 

The news comes as the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) is expected to hold discussions on Monday on further easing disease control measures, reopening border checkpoints in the south and guidelines for New Year celebrations.

 

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha will lead the CCSA meeting in assessing the current situation, with the relaxation of curbs and reopening of southern checkpoints being high on the agenda.

 

Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said the Monday meeting is among the premier’s main events for next week, in addition to visiting the southern provinces of Yala and Pattani on Wednesday and joining a meeting of the Southern Border Province Administrative Center (SPBAC).

But deaths march on ... and near 50K "in care" ...

 

Unless I'm mistaken: we don't know:

- the daily number of tests

- the vaccination status (and prior infection status) of the newly infected

- the severity of symptoms

Let's see how Thailand deals with omicron when it arrives.

UK stepping up its booster campaign from over 500,000 jabs yesterday to an target average of 1,000,000 per day.

Army units, walk ins and mobile units. The idea being to get the adult population boosted for the New Year.

Thailand not even 70% double jabbed.

Does Thailand even have enough vaccine for a booster campaign?

Even if omicron is allegedly milder, a timy minority of a lot of sick people will still put pressure on any health care system.

A highly transmissible virus and the threat of 2 weeks of incarceration on arrival in Thailand if you fail the PCR test.

Good luck for any travellers prepared to run this infection gauntlet.

I would think the odds have just gone very much in omicron's favour.

 

 

Thailand to expedite COVID-19 boosters in anticipation of Omicron

 

BANGKOK, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Thailand will halve to three months the time between administering a second COVID-19 vaccine shot and a booster, a health official said on Monday, to try to strengthen immunity in anticipation of a local spread of the Omicron variant.

One can only hope that the Thai authorities are watching what is happening in S Africa and the UK and as a matter of urgency are setting up a booster campaign for more or less immediate roll out. Or, are they following their delta strategy of claiming it’s under control, until it isn’t, and only then scrambling to get some vaccines into arms? 

 

there is also the matter of exactly what boosters will be required. People who had two AZ or two Pfizer are in a fairly clear cut situation but, those who had 2 sinovac may, or may not, have had a booster already. Do they need another? And those who had the unique mix and match of sinovac and AZ are another category for which there will be little to no data available outside of Thailand because no other government afaik, followed that particular mix and match combination.

 

all is pretty quiet on the omicron front in Thailand and it’s a time for urgent and immediate action, not being lulled into a false sense of security. It’s time to get just a little bit ahead of the curve.

Testament to how well Thailand is currently handling the situation that the focus, even on this Thailand thread, has switched to the Omicron situation in the UK.

Thats the situation my wife is in and many people like her, she originally had her 2 dose Sinovac regime then had an AZ booster 3 months ago, its likely she is already down to zero protection from Omicron. Luckily she got in before Phuket were giving boosters with just 20% of the recommended dose under the skin!!

 

As you mentioned, Thailand has still got time to get ahead of the curve and must act immediately with boosters of pfizer or moderna, to avoid another full blown outbreak.

Oh, so that's why Thailand didn't have any covid last year.

These figures must be a joke..., day after day, week after week, 

The amount of people recovered, exceeds infections,  and there are more recoveries than there were infected patients in total.....
