More Omicron Cases Likely in January

BANGKOK, Dec 14 (TNA) – The Public Health Ministry expects the country to record more Omicron cases in the middle of January.

 

Dr. Somsak Akksilp, director-general of the ministry’s Department of Medical Services, said that as Omicron cases were spreading overseas and Britain recorded a fatality caused by the new COVID-19 variant, he thought that Thailand would have more Omicron cases after New Year, possibly in the middle of January.

 

The Omicron variant was highly contagious, spread faster than the Delta variant and might avoid antibodies.

Poorly worded and potentially misleading. 
 

As far as I am aware no one has yet reported the death was caused  by Omicron, only the person died with Omicron

I hope so. So far, it is revealing itself as less dangerous, and far less symptomatic than Delta. One death worldwide? Far less than a common flu.

An expert in SA said there had been 640 so far there. 

 

"Gauteng cases have peaked already, and there is only a slight uptick in C-19 deaths. Total confirmed C-19 deaths from #Omicron is estimated at 640 for this wave. Gauteng had 15,400 confirmed C-19 deaths from Delta.

 

The hope as currently in SA being that its not as bad as the delta death rates although they do not sequence every death.

As well as that, the agenda driven BBC, now widely ridiculed and disbelieved where once it was widely admired, makes a sensation of anything and fails to add context - does anyone seriously believe that if almost anywhere did the volume of testing and sequencing that the western and northern European countries did, then they wouldn't find variants and high/increasing rates? 

 

One thing is for sure, if this omicron fatality had fit their aims and been younger or healthy or slim, then the BBC would be using this info - BBC needs to be impelled to add context to data and lurid headlines so that populations can make rational assessments of the news.  Those of us that have first hand knowledge of wards are aware of what the BBC consistently fails to report.

One death reported so far is closer to the truth. However AFAICS Omicron is just getting started in the same way that the original covid was in its early stages.

It’s not just the likes of the BBC. You can also read the same type of sensationalism and fearmongering rhetoric used by posters on forums like this, day in and day out.

I don't doubt it - I don't think the BBC agenda is necessarily sinister but it's the use of fear rather than rational news with context,  that allows adults to make rational decisions because fear tactics simply entrench a substantial opposition, then the ability of societies to have a coherent strategy to deal with these things together is lost.

Agreed, the death could just well have been a 108 year old pensioner, with dementia, final stage cancer, over four hundred KG and died on an electric scooter whilst chain smoking  !

I'd imagine some were a lot worse than that.

 

Someone came up with an 'excess deaths' argument but of course there are excess deaths when a previously unknown (in  humans) virus is unleashed - don't we all accept a certain number of deaths from a million  different conditions annually ?  -  but then as treatments catch up a bit and more is known then a realistic number of deaths becomes yet another part of accepted statistics. 

 

No doubt that the obesity and unhealthy diets and lifestyles of so many affects the ability of those to have any natural ability to survive these types of viruses.

Add CNN....and they have sooo many news stories with their staff that they don't report on!  I mean A LOT. So they just do more scare mongering instead of looking in the mirror.  But I see CNN days are numbered. Turn it on now. My guess is they are discussing Donald or another negative story on Corona.

Interesting to see it’s the media being attacked while deflecting from the fact that Public Health Officials are doing what they can to minimize the effects of Omicron and possible consequences.

Let's hope so ... but a high transmission rate equals a high possibility of further mutations , what could mean no good ...

As i understand it the said UK fatality died with omicron not of it, i could be wrong. Any how it looks like you guys have until mid January before you can catch it which is nice to know,  i wish the UK Government could let us know when we could possibly get it . Another fiasco from the UK government as usual .

- less cases,

- the same amount of cases,

- more cases,

 I would say that he made the right choice. Whatever modeling algorithm he is using will likely be spot on.

The UK government does not yet know the implications of Omicron, whether it will be dangerous or not. 

 

The people here who are downplaying Omicron don't have to deal with the consequences of being wrong.
