Thailand on Thursday (December 16) reported 3,684 new COVID-19 cases, 4,531 recoveries and 26 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 3,540. Prisons: 144

▶︎ Recoveries: 4,531

▶︎ Total infections since April 1: 2,153,097

▶︎ Total recoveries since April 1: 2,087,806

Thursday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,181,960 with 21,286 deaths.

The news comes as One more Omicron variant case has been confirmed in Thailand, bringing total confirmed cases to date to nine, plus five potential cases still awaiting confirmation by means of whole genome sequencing (WGS) tests, according to Director-General of the Medical Sciences Department Dr. Supakit Sirilak.

As all the cases involve foreign arrivals which is normal for countries first experiencing the Omicron variant, he predicted that the first locally acquired case will inevitably emerge.

The results are staggering when you look at the graph as to how the cases dip starting on the weekend and then rise as we start the midweek. Still the numbers are dropping, but then how many are truly being tested as I have asked before.

Vaccinations have hit just above 60% for Thailand and they still have 10% to go to reach their original goal of 70% of Thailand being vaccinated by the end of the year which is just now 15 days away. Can they make it?  I am not sure, but then they shifted the goal posts a while back to 100 million vaccinations by December and they missed that one.  They then pushed that goal a little further out and still missed it.  Will they reach that goal in the next 15 days?  Thats going to be tight in my view.

However, my housekeeper will be getting her second AZ jab today, so she will now be one of the fully vaccinated, yet they are now pushing boosters.

Stay safe everyone, and lets hope for the best.  More tourists are popping up here in Bangkok, be it Thai domestic tourists or foreigners it is noticeable.

These bottom 4 provinces are still under 40% double vaxxed (as of 13th Dec)

In que at the Bangrak vaccination center this morning with my housekeeper, and it was busy, but then they are also issuing the yellow passport books here as well and many were in line for that as well.

A few more days like the above post and they should be to 100 million.  I am sure there will be pats on the backs all around.

No word yet in the article whether they had a pcr test yet to detect the Omicron S gene drop out or whether they are just considered high risks. Either way it’s coming and there is nothing that can be done to stop it

These numbers are meaningless unless shown as a percentage of tests performed.

The UK had a new high yesterday but performed 1.3 million tests , giving a positive rate circa 5.1%..

What is the positive test percentage in Thailand ?

Honestly this is starting to @^#% me off as much as the mainstream media in Australia obsessing over covid numbers.

For god sakes move on and stop obsessing over these figures, if you haven't scared people into having the vaccine by now you're never going to...and before some idiot starts calling me an anti vax conspiracy theorist i was probably vaxed before most reading this...

Its here to stay, if you are old and/or vulnerable due to other issues take extra care, just as you would to avoid a plethora or other dangers that could kill you if you fell into that category.

Live life, the choice should be YOURS

Why post if that's the way you feel.  The topic is what it is, and we try to keep others informed with things that are happening, vaccinations included on this OP. We do not obsess over the numbers as you say. Thanks for at least understanding that as you say " if you are old and/or vulnerable due to other issues take extra care, just as you would to avoid a plethora or other dangers that could kill you if you fell into that category".  However, living life as you choose without thinking about others is not proper as this has the ability to explode at any time.  Yet your right, it is time to move on and put covid to bed, damned if you do and damned if you don't.....

Well said. Before someone says it, you have as much to post your views as anyone else so carry on.

It’s as if people want to live in fear and not content with that want everyone else too as well and get upset and post negative comments if everyone doesn’t agree with their pessimistic view of life.

All this when there’s only nine confirmed cases so far in Thailand.

You can see imagine some people hitting the refresh  button waiting for the next alarmist headline to share.

As you say, it’s here to stay. If you are reasonable healthy you have little to worry about. If you have pre existing or very old then either stay at home or rake the relative extra precautions.

What is the world coming too when people get upset about kids playing outside without a face covering on.

Hysterical nonsense.

One of the most important takeaways from your post for me. I agree 100%. Its about taking responsibility for keeping yourself safe and those around you who you live with or meet. Simple measures, vaccinations, appropriate and safe meetings, self testing and masking where appropriate. Thats all we can do but they are important and vital for everyone to follow.

We all have a part to play in this but talk of hysterics and panic is nonsense.

Another simple and basic fact for good public health.

However, not simple and basic enough for some people.

Omicron variant more resistant to vaccine but causes less severe covid, major South African study concludes

Great news, less than a day old.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/12/14/south-africa-omicron-coronavirus/

Most infections are described as mild, with recoveries usually within three days, he said. The most common early symptom reported is a scratchy throat, followed by nasal congestion, a dry cough and myalgia, or aches, manifesting in lower back pain.

Yes the "Discovery Health" study, it was discussed a little in this thread from yesterday.

Discovery Health’s chief executive, told a news briefing. He said the disease may be less severe in South Africa because more than 70 percent of the population had already been exposed to the coronavirus. He cautioned, however, that it was still in the early days and hospital admissions could rise sharply as the variant evolves.

You maybe be interested in the latest statement from WHO yesterday. "Even "if" Omicron does cause less severe disease, the sheer number of cases could once again overwhelm unprepared health systems,"

If you're not into WHO look at John Campbells video from the 15th about the Discovery Health study, he goes through it all in detail and its pretty somber

Tiny percentage of a huge population = healthcare system overwhelmed.

R rate in London between 3 - 5.

Let's see how omicron does against a UK population with nearly 50% of adults boosted and 650,000 people a day get boosters.

Target 1 million per day boosters
