The last 2 vehicles that I have had hit me from behind (while I was stationary) had no insurance.

When we were about to call our insurance and the police, both drivers decided to pay for the (admittedly minor) damage as they didn't want the police checking if they had a licence

Well what can I say, since you had 2 accidents it translates into ALL Thai drivers and I have zero doubt both of your accidents , drivers got so scared that they instantly paid up????????

Was this lady so very very poor that she could not afford the cost of a light on the rear of her Samlor (about 50 baht) ????

Very unlikely in all cases....  they have simple chosen not to prioritise their own safety or have simply not thought about it.

My trusty old  (17 years) Honda wave  that i have just sold  never had a  light bulb replaced, i have a 17 year old  pick up  that has never  had a light bulb replaced, and  yes i do night driving too.. i am told buy a local (Thai) teenager  you are "chicken"(scared) if you need to drive  with lights on after dark !!
