Thai immigration chief Pol Lt-Gen Phakphumphiphat Sajjaphan speaking at HQ yesterday announced the arrest of a Hungarian man hiding out in Thailand on overstay.

Forty eight year old Lajos (name transliterated from Thai and possibly incorrect) was named on a Hungarian police website where it was reported he was wanted for insurance fraud in the sum of more than 401 million forint (42 million baht).

He was arrested at a New Petchaburi Road condominium in Huay Khwang, Bangkok.

The suspect entered Thailand on 16th March 2010 on a 60 day tourist visa.

His overstay was 4,254 days, reported Thai Rath.

He is now in detention awaiting deportation back to Hungary.

Another example of why 90 day reporting is a complete waste of time. No 'miscreants' will ever turn up, and you're just checking people you don't need to !

  • Obviously they hadn't mobilized the Farang chaser, that super smart BMW! He may have been caught years ago.

  • So much for the immigration system.

Is that an overstay record?

I mean for getting nabbed.

Guess he is out of the re-entry question for an unforseen amount of time.

Doesn't say how he was caught? Probably a tip-off.

Will this be a record of overstay or will a new record breaker come forward

In due time ????

Pretty amazing overstay. I don’t understand how he could manage. Find myself in constant situations were I have to show my passport and visa (like hotels, flights etc.)

Guess you need either a fake visa/passport or not move around too much during an overstay.

Such a dichotomy for TAT...at 42 million baht, he kind of qualifies as a "Quality Tourist", but the excessive overstay means he will likely be banned until Hell freezes over + 1 day.

These stories never fail to amaze, especially given the constant worries over annual renewals and 90 reporting and TM30 etc on this site.  One wonders why we bother…. Oh yea, we are not criminals.

I'm not so sure.  It makes foreigners feel unwelcome and reassures Thais that we are being treated harshly.  That's quite likely the main aim.

"I don’t understand how he could manage." - 42 Million baht is quite a sufficient budget for handling "situations".

These stodgy vinyl board displays have gotten really old. How about weekly episodes of “Catch the Overstay”? It would make for great reality TV with evil foreigners intent on harming the good name of Thailand..... outwitted by brave, patriotic, incorruptible Thai cops.

They have applied for 30 new fighter jets so this doesn't happen again.

I bet that this guy did not do the 90 day reporting and maybe his stolen money

was finally running out, or he bragged too much to the wrong person who

told the police to check if this guy was wanted anywhere. I hope Hungary has

a nice jail cell waiting for his return.

might be close, I think there was the Japanese guy that was 19 years??

More proof that the 90 day report is a complete waste of time and energy????????????

That is a fair effort. Almost feel like he should be congratulated for it. Almost. ????

Probably his name is Laszlo.....

Guy scams 401 million forint/42 million baht and it took over a decade for the Hungary police to track him down?  Not exactly quick are they?
