BANGKOK (NNT) - Fake news and rumors about the current situation of COVID-19 have the potential to cause confusion among the public, and the prime minister is now urging people to stop sharing fake news and to report them so that facts are discerned from fiction.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha has relayed his concern on the matter through Prime Minister’s Office spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, who disclosed that the DES Ministry’s Anti-Fake News Center sifted through about 11 million potential fake news messages during January 14 and 20. 231 messages carrying 116 unique contents necessitated inspection. 21 of the content sets were related to Covid, and 30 of the 66 content sets inspected so far proved to be factual news.

Mr. Thanakorn said the Anti-Fake News Center’s awareness promotion drive has resulted in more people being conscious of fake news on social media and more reporting of fake news to the center. As a result, the ratio of real news to fake news has increased.

According to the spokesman, there remain groups that endeavor to sow confusion by propagating fake news daily. The fake news is aimed at sowing misunderstanding on various issues, while the number of COVID-19-related fake news reported to the monitoring center has clearly increased.

Mr. Thanakorn asks that people thoroughly assess information acquired on social media before sharing them, and report dubious content to the Anti-Fake News Center in order for its factuality to be verified by the respective competent agency.

So would it be fake news to say that testing numbers are low so that he can completely re open the country or are they just not testing the numbers to give an actual picture of how Omicron is spreading throughout the country now that it has been found in every Province ?

Remember boys and girls and loyal subjects….any news not endorsed by the government is by definition…..untrue. The Fearless Leader says so.

How far are we from North Korea are we again?...

What is the Ministry of Truth?

The Ministry of Truth (Newspeak: Minitrue) is the ministry of propaganda. As with the other ministries in the novel [George Orwell's 1984], the name Ministry of Truth is a misnomer because in reality it serves the opposite: it is responsible for any necessary falsification of historical events.

I'd like to see an example of this fake news so I am better informed, or should I just be gullible and believe everything I read ????

Citizens are requested to immediately report dubious, questionable, corrupt and incompetent behavior on the part of the army, the administration, police, customs, immigration, and border agents.

Clean up your own house. Stop threatening us and cautioning us. You are the ones who need to be cautioned. You are the ones who need to behave and begin being capable, for a change.

Who really cares about the potential Fake News about Covid.

Here is undeniable proof that all your messages are being intercepted, and  content monitored by this Government.

And they have again, and again denied this is happening, which appears to be Fake News of the highest Caliber.

It's the people that believed this narrative and believed that a military government with no checks or balances would be the lesser of two evils that I feel sorry for.

Total mugs.

What he says is a perfectly reasonable and responsible thing for a head of government to say. However it needs that government for its part to make sure it gives accurate information and acts responsibly. Unfortunately as you suggest it often seems that doesn't happen.

"Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, who disclosed that the DES Ministry’s Anti-Fake News Center sifted through about 11 million potential fake news messages during January 14 and 20."

If he means over the 7 day period then they went through 1100 messages every single minute of the day and 231 warranted a further look according to their criteria. Hardly a threat is it?

Why just pick Covid 19 I am sure there would be plenty other matters for people to report on whether factual or false !

The government being the main perpetrator. Gawd, it makes you puke!

This very forum shared fake news which claimed that one centre was offering 3rd and 4th booster shots when they were actually offering 1st and 2nd boosters the second booster for frontline staff only

Does this mean Fox News is being banned in LOS?  That would be a shame after that hard-hitting reporting of the revelations of M&M's advertising.

Lots of paranoid and deranged responses here. I have yet to see a single news report quoted on this board where anything the government has said about the virus or the vaccines themselves which is even remotely untrue. I'm not referring to testing rates or prevalence of the virus but the actual facts about the virus and the vaccines.
