Thailand ranked 5th best worldwide for retirees by French magazine

One of only two Asian destinations to feature in Capital magazine’s top 10 list for retirees

TAT Newsroom

Bangkok – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to report that Thailand has been ranked the best place in Asia and the fifth best place in the world for retirees by French magazine Capital, which published the list on the website Retraite sans Frontieres.

This follows a similar world-leading accolade given to Thailand earlier this month in the ‘2022 Annual Global Retirement Index’ by International Living, which named Thailand the best Asian country for foreigners to retire, and the 11th best country to retire worldwide.

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT, said “Thailand’s reputation as a leading destination of choice for retirees the world over is growing, something that can be seen in the bestowing of these international accolades.”

Thailand was one of only two Asian countries to feature in Capital magazine’s top 10 list for retirees, the other being Indonesia.

Greece, Portugal, Mauritius, and Spain topped the list with rankings based on 12 criteria: cost of living, real estate, medical, cultural heritage, environmental heritage, food, weather, leisure activities, safety, difficulty in adaptation, transportation convenience, and infrastructure.

Thailand scored particularly well in the cost of living, real estate, and medical criteria.

Thailand’s inclusion in Capital’s top 10 places for retirees, despite it having no territorial links to France nor usage of French as an official language, confirmed the kingdom as a favourite spot for French tourists, especially the elderly. In addition, while the rankings may have been affected by the COVID-19 travel and transportation hurdles that favoured European and Mediterranean Sea destinations because of their proximity to France, Thailand still made the list.

It is ranked so high by them because Thailand has comfortable barstools they can sit on all day and drink cheap beer, while complaining about their host country and the people In it.

Of the French, or of Thailand?

Most of us don't have loads of money but we can live on our pensions quite nicely here. And the weather is so good compared to the weather back home. I would think it would much higher up than fifth on the list. And that's not even talking about the greatness on the Thai people.

I agree with the assessment.  The one thing they did not list was available attractive younger women for older retired men.  Add this, and Thailand is number one in my book.

<deleted> same old BS story, repeated 3 times every month, Aseannow seems to forget (ignore) the fact that not all retirees are overweight, tattooed and with a receding hairline, men that enjoy booze and hookers.

Granted there are happily married (in their county of origin not to a luv u long time 30 year younger 'wife') retirees living here but they are very few and far between.

Younger chickies for older men are available in every country, when disparity of wealth exist between the rich & poor.

I would say for the last decade Thailand has been slipping as the best location to retire to...

the last six years it has plummeted.

Playing loud music ?

Or is that night time activity, just reserved for Thai people only.

Yes, totally agree about road deaths. that the number one for me.

What these simpletons fail to mention, is that this ranking is really all about the money. Anyone who is wealthy or even affluent, would have little interest in retiring here. So, it is mostly about affordability. And I agree with that. It is reasonable here. Most of us live well, on a relatively modest income or pension.

There are at least a dozen good reasons why someone without our financial limitations would NOT pick Thailand. Do they need to be repeated? We all know what they are. And these are part of the reasons why there is a mass exodus of expats leaving Thailand over the past few years. No question the number of expats here is dropping.

These lying creeps would do anything for PR. The reality is, they want tourists, but they don't want expats. And tourists don't want them anymore.

Been living here for over 20 years. Biggest beef if the exit visa I need to travel.

Portugal is on my list along with one of those cheap houses in Sicily.

I'm going to investigate them this year to see if it's really better than here.

No mention of how hospitable the kind Immigration Officers are when we go to get our 90-day stamp to prove we are not involved in criminal activity....

This number changes every week. At least if you lie, stick to it.

I know of at least 2 friends that have committed to moving to Portugal, one a family. While probably a little more expensive overall there are particular tax incentives offered by the government which probably more than offset that and of course no ‘Russian roulette' with visa renewal,as here. The difference between a government tolerating your presence while it suits vs one which actively encourages retirees to move there . For Europeans having the rest of Europe on the doorstep too must be an advantage .

The sheer fact that the TAT comments ...........

French journalists on a freebie trip sponsored by who? In the past, travel agency and airline staff got invited to "familiarization" trips. Even cargo airline staff made it to Thailand and had fantastic <deleted>-ups in places less promoted by TAT ...............

An obscure French economics magazine gives a tentative nod of approval and it is a 'world-leading accolade'.

That is, world leading of 5th placed countries.

This 'Bangkok, 14 January, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is pleased to report that the ‘2022 Annual Global Retirement Index’ released this month by International Living has named Thailand as the best Asian country for foreigners to retire, and the 11th best country to retire worldwide.' from;

https://www.tatnews.org/2022/01/global-survey-positions-thailand-as-no-1-asian-destination-for-retirees/

I really don't think it matters whether Thailand is is 1st, 5th, 11th 100th....because, probably, most do a little research to see which country suits them best. Not only that, expats have many different reasons for choosing a destination and surely at present, it is difficult to decide about anything.

It occurred to me too. If you think road, I agree it's dubious.

But then I thought: what about crime? I feel perfectly safe in CM. Burglary, theft, ... almost unknown. My wife is safe alone at night. We can leave the keys, the entire shopping in the scooter. Compare to any big city in Europe. So yes, for me safety is a check.

So what?

I'm an orphan, and I don't have a family in Europe. So retiring and Thailand was ideal for me.

In my experience they are very kind an efficient actually. it costs me zero time. Or I can do it online.

I know I sound like the typical Thai apologist, I usually am not, but I report my own experience I understand others may differ.

Now, my non-european wife on the other hand, when she has to apply for a visa to my own country, she can tell you what a pleasant experience it is to deal with my immigration officers. Not.
