BANGKOK (NNT) - Workation Thailand is an initiative launched to promote working holidays among people in Thailand. Organizations and agencies that contributed to the program have now been recognized by the prime minister at an awards ceremony.

Prime Minister Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha presented plaques and certificates to organizations that have made contributions to the Thai tourism industry. The organizations are those that have accumulated the most “survival points” under the Workation Thailand program. The latter is an initiative launched last year to encourage working holidays in various destinations in Thailand.

The awards are aimed at encouraging various organizations to continue making contributions to the tourism Industry.

The prime minister noted the government considers the tourism industry to be a generator of income that enables Thailand’s sustainable development. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports and the Tourism Authority of Thailand will continue to promote the Workation Thailand program. By doing so, local economies and the national economy are expected to be stimulated by the ‘workation’ activity of travelers.

Gen. Prayut also gave publicity to the Amazing Thailand Marathon Bangkok 2021 event that is set to take place on February 26. Winners will be presented with royally-bestowed trophies from His Majesty the King, Her Majesty the Queen, and Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha Narendiradebyavati. A total of 1,729,500 baht in prize money is also up for grabs. The full marathon will take place on Saturday, February 26, and a half marathon on Sunday, February 28.

Nothing will work for tourism as long as Thailand has this arbitrary quarantine scheme. People who test themselves negative get positive results, insurances don't cover asymptomatic quarantine, etc. etc.

Thailand gets a lot of bad press currently in the West for the quarantine ripoffs and arbitrariness.

Travelers prefer countries with less to zero such hassles, and there are many to choose from.

Thailand overestimates itself once again grandiosely.

Anybody know what this is about?

Is it just a new name for "digital nomads" or is there something else there like a work permit or specific visa?

I think it's about Thai organizations and their employees.

Got it exactly right.

Some who leave will also not return nor be able to buy insurance if very old/sick etc

Surely there is a niche for an insurance to cover every single scam. Many would pay handsomely for the peace of mind, it would have to cover ALL unforeseen costs, forced bills, hotel, hospitel , loss of connections, bookings.

There ae lots of folks who need to travel for weddings, funerals, business, family reasons not merely so called digital nomads

I doubt this will happen as some are gaining from ruining authentic tourists.

How can you contribute to something the Thai government is deliberately trying to stop ? Unless these are companies designing red tape !

workations??? when the backpackers came on a workaction the faced a lot of problems, as paperwork for workpermit and visa, and than the labourlaw that forbids everyone to do a job that can be done by a Thai national.. so tourism?? and why should a Thai person go on a holiday somewhere to work??

Why not just allow anyone to work in any occupation.. or is that asking too much?

Yes, expect it to be so overly complicated that no one will come on top of the fact no one will come due to onerous covid restrictions. Finally, if all that's not off-putting enough the terms will be vague and if that doesn't dissuade you - the whole thing will be ripe for additional hassles, fees and scams. We know all this...

So it's ok now to run your business out of Thailand? I'm so confused.

As I said before 95% of real IT workers just can't live anywhere. Their companies worry about security and connectivity. Other businesses, online businesses you just can't live 100000km away from your people, stock, materials...

This will really only appeal to freelance web workers basically.

Despite most teachers only making 20-45k pm you can bet the cumulative taxation is a good money spinner.

I'm top 1% tax payer.

I agree. In Europe Newspaper start to warn for visiting Thaialnd at the moment, beacuse of the restriction and the abuse of the Covid-Test's. Several testimonial told their bad expierence in the Hospital. The reputation of Thailand is getting worse and worse. Hope this comes to an end soon!
