Sat Nav for my Pickup

Agree, Google Maps is as good as it gets.   Although I have a large screen media unit with Android Auto, I inevitably just use a wireless charger type holder for the phone in a convenient location.   I've had a few of these, but settled on a type that you fit into a cup holder as being the most secure (suction types inevitably fall off, risking damage to the phone, and air vent types block that precious fresh air.   A few photos of mine in the Fortuner, and one of the after market Alpine media unit I had fitted.

  • I have a factory installed navigation system in my 2018 Mazda and I can tell you that "Maps" that comes with many cell phones is far superior!

Fully agree with this.  Fitted SatNavs are only upgraded when you take the car to the dealer for a service; maps on cellphones are updated regularly and require no effort from you. I leave my car

  • I have a toyota hilux sat nav from the factory. The installed map is missing many highways, and often shows me driving in the ocean or in a field. Even highways that have existed for more than 5 years

That particular one I got from Amazon.com

I don't mind paying import duties etc if I'm getting exactly what I want, and usually delivered within 7 days.

Thanks for that. Unfortunately, my new Toyota pickup (well, it was new in November 2003 when I bought it), doesn't have the luxury of a cup-holder ???? so I'm going to have to find another way of securing the phone holder.

At the moment, the phone holder is stuck there with double-sided sticky stuff:

On the top of the dashboard there is a very small compass to the left of a very strongly held base unit from an old Garmin navigation system that was given to me by a mate when he upgraded to a newer one. I never used it and now can't find the device - I could've stuck the phone holder to its screen!

Never mind, I'll figure something out! ????

I'm not a fan of Google maps in the car. It might be great for much of the country but it's not very good for Bangkok and it is slow.

The unit that came in out Fortuner is okay, but it needs an update, and I am not sure how how to go about it. My local dealer said they were not available. I need to try a little harder to get it figured out.

The unit that came in the Highlander was great. It was a Kenwood head with a Garmin GPS system. Upgrading the map was easy, and costed B400.

I had a Garmin stick-on unit before that which was great, easy to update as well.

Also have a Garmin stick-on for North America that has free lifetime traffic and map updates.

But how often is it undated? Google Maps does it every time you use it, and you can upload maps/journeys to your phone, so not need internet

Updated regularly. I have used it in 2 countries and found it very useful. Speed camera warnings, places if interest AtMs and much much more inc dash cam feature.

For the small (lifetime) fee it really is feature rich.
