Thai resorts

Featured Replies

Ok.

Decided to book a couple of nights in a beach resort. Obvoiusly can't name it.

On line menu shows a good selection of of 'western dishes'.

Settled in, nice room etc. Got to the restaurant and asked for a couple of things.

Sorry, was the answer, we no longer have anyone who can cook western food.

What is the problem with these idiots.

'We need need more tourists but they will eat what we supply, not what they want'.

Rant over.

You eat what you want.  I'll eat what I want. Why do people try to dictate what others should eat? Anyway that's not not the point of my opening post.

And hotels can serve what they want too. Walk outside, find a restaurant.

Many hotels and resorts did not or still do not have restaurant or room service, and if have it is very limited menu.

It is what it is and the good thing, the resorts have been and still is heavily discounted. Maybe not during Thai holidays thow.

If you want full service, aim for the bigger chain 5 star resorts and hotels.

A hotel cant buy 1 steak. They have to order to make a profit. Unless there is 100 westerners there weekly it isnt practical to offer a western menu.

If you go to Patong Im sure you would find a hotel with western menu.

When living in Thailand, I do eat more western food, than Thai food when taking "holiday" from my rural residence ????

I would go to a restaurant. 5 star hotels have ok western food but doubled price. Thai hotels 3 or 4 stars usually poor western food.

With covid there supplies be low otherwise wasted.

Frankly I think your expectations of Thai resorts are unrealistic. It's fair to say I have extensive insight on the industry. Chefs (i.e. real ones that can cook a broad range of foods, and cook WELL) are expensive to employ. Many hotels have been hit hard this last couple of years and have had to let the more costly staff go. Additional to this is Thai resorts i.e. GENUINELY Thai owned and managed are usually managed really badly and have generally low standards in all aspects of the business, from front of house to basic maintenance. . .

As another poster pointed out, if you want full service and professionalism, stick with the international brands (Marriott, Intercontinental, Hilton etc etc) where they have the resources, training and backups in place. I specifically avoid Thai operated hotels for the above reasons. Yes, internationals are more expensive, but you get what you pay for, and it's particularly true in this industry.

I'm not on holiday, I live here and only eat western food.

Today, breakfast = tuna sandwich, lunch = Cumberland sausage and chips, tea = cheese sandwich.

Best to eat out when staying at Thai resorts IMHO.

7-11 will deliver toasted cheese and ham sandwiches if you're locked in.

Myself I ONLY eat western food when on holiday. By the time we get our annual vacation I'm so utterly sick of Thai food I'll spend whatever it takes to stay at a nice international hotel and eat the finest western food. . .

"Thai Resort" =  "Everything Mediocre"

Cos I love my Mrs, and she cooks me food I like, simple really.

traveled all around the world, can honestly say i've never expected to eat 'western' food, always happy to enjoy/experiment with the local cuisine, and had some amazing gastronomic experiences. open your mind and taste buds.

So... You never fancied a Burger, or Pizza.....  you never want something different beyond the local foods ?

There’s a reason that every single town and city in the world does not have restaurants selling ‘only local cuisine’ and that is because people want something different from time to time, people different tastes....

Sometimes I want Udon noodles, sometimes I want a Chicken Madras, sometimes Khao Soi, sometimes Tomyum, sometimes a Steak and Fries, sometimes Katsu-Don, sometimes fish-taco’s... and on and on and on.....      If I were the kind of person that said I only ever eat ‘local’ cuisine I’d be totally full of 3#!te like the above poster !!....

... open your mind and taste buds... ????   Open your brain ‘it is what it is’....

Just guessing, but reads like you didn't do enough research on the hotel.  Read 'current' reviews, dates of photos you saw, cross reference with booking site reviews, Gmap reviews.  Possibly giving you an indication what to expect.

Until western tourist arrive in a lot more numbers, would think many don't bother now with western food.

Does it only have 1 restaurant, and NO western food ... and called a 'resort'.  Sounds a bit of a stretch.  Self rated at 4 or 5 stars ... ????

As long travelling I can agree, but living months and  years away from your home country, do something to your needs.

Anyway that's not not the point

It's not easy owning a resort these days... either the cook quit and they have not rehired or they found the cook to be an extra expense they could not abide... another cost of covid. When we spend for a vacation we don't want such unexpected issues. Hope you enjoy everything else.

I guess the degree of dissatisfaction should correspond to the standard / rating of the resort.

If this is a 4 or 5 star place then you are quite right to be disappointed.

if this is just a local 2 star place, then there is room for a lot of tolerance.

That said, they did market ‘western food’ and if that was part of your reason for staying there you were misled and are quite rightly disappointed.

The only other thing I have to add is that I’m not surprised by a number of the moronic Asean-now responses which ignore the actual point and have extracted a single facet with with to blame the Op... comments such as...

Dumb response - he wanted Western food (do you eat Thai food 100% of the time ?)

Even dumber response - he wanted wester food where he was.

The hotel advertised Western food... The ‘go elsewhere’ response is completely missing the ops point.

Thai’s don’t eat western food ???.... No only have you missed the point, you care coming up with ridiculous and dumb comments to blame the op or imply he is unreasonable for wanting western food in a place which advertises a Western menu !!!

Its just food, not a war or cancer. If I stay at a hotel and dont like the food I dont eat there. A lot of drama over a meal.

Go to a burger shop or pizza shop. They specialise in such things. Outside a 5 star hotel you wont get good western food. Thai version of bacon and eggs is 3/10 normally.

Yes all those years I lived in Thailand I cooked for my self western food, never liked Thai food at all, just going to the markets I have to hold my breathe have eaten Thai food twice in all those years first time I spend all my days in the bathroom the second time in hospital for 3 days. Thai food is very much over rated and yes I like any food I love Indian,Malaysian,Chinese all types of western food so I am not a fussy eater.

How is it overrated if you ate it twice? You probably wouldnt know what Thai food really is or the range.

Tried Khao Soi or Hang Lay?

(You have eaten less than 2% of the dishes)

Almost nobody hates good Khao Soi or Hang Lay. Most people like Massaman too. Larb Moo with fresh lettuce leaves.
