Seven Deadly Days: Top RTP commanders happy with the Songkran road stats

Lt-Gen Prachuap Wongsuk told Thai Rath yesterday that the top brass at the RTP were satisfied as the so called "Seven Deadly Days" on the Songkran roads came to an end.

 

Prachuap said all the accident stats were better than Songkran 2021.

 

The media reported that Big Pat - RTP chief Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk - and Big Den - Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat - were pleased with the numbers.

 

In the first six days there were 1,720 accidents or 392 (185) less than last year.

 

Injuries were also down 19%.

The death toll was 237 - 14 less or 5.58% down.

 

There were a total of 336,975 traffic offences listed below in a top ten:

 

◼︎ No helmet 57,021

◼︎ "Dangerous motorcycle" 10,180

◼︎ DUI 14,544

◼︎ No seatbelt 16,262

◼︎ No licence 67,341

◼︎ Speeding 155, 511

◼︎ Going through red lights 9,216,

◼︎ Going the wrong way 4,477

◼︎ Overtaking in the wrong place 845 and

◼︎ Using a phone while driving 1,578.

Well done, any progress to reduce deaths is good. 

Here in Hua Hin, it seems to be the foreigners that don't wear helmets and drive drunk, and the Thais to use their phones when driving and go through red lights.

Who could have imagined this????? With poorly news every day and no provincial totals and nobody who can confirm it... But the RTP is pleased... So problems solved again...Next year the same..... and with 25.000 deaths on the road every year that  equals 68 a day.. it was indeed a good week with only 40 a day..

Yes, when you also take into account that these numbers are just the people who were actually caught! 

If they had the man power to set up police check points in all Thailand's rural areas then these figures would increase tenfold.

67,000 driving around with no licence is a pretty terrifying statistic.

What's the deterrent? Points on the licence is a non-starter. A ban on driving clearly won't work. A slap on the wrist? A small fine? A now don't do it again, there's a good fella? 

Impound the vehicle and irrespective of whether the driver is the owner or not, charge a very, very hefty fee for its return.

Insufficient deterrent...........Imprison the driver, ban him/her/it for 10 years and destroy the vehicle......regardless of who owns it.  To make Thais tow the line requires maximum hardship!

The deadliest days on the roads are still less than 1/2 as many deaths per day as from Covid.

Must be some sick bar stewards these ones to state that they are happy that 237 people lost their lives in the last 7 days on the roads. Perhaps these RTP ghouls should be re-trained as health professionals as they would be possibly have spontaneous orgasms to know that there were  far more deaths from covid in the same period.

With all these generals in the police force do you think one of them could give us the stats and the people that died on the way to the hospital or in the hospital due to an accident and I believe a big reason was the fuel prices were very high compared to last year so a lot of people stayed home amazing Thailand TIT

Thais that I know in Bangkok rarely think that there's anything wrong with driving after drinking and being way over the limit. Must be different in Hua Hin.....or are we just blaming foreigners for all things bad.

I went through dozens and dozens of checkpoints over the course of the holiday, since there was one in every single village and town that we passed through. Over the course of four days, only one of those had anyone actually standing in the road - the others just had a tent, cones, and a bunch of people in various uniforms sitting at tables drinking coffee or looking at their phones.

 

At the one with police actually working, we were signaled to lower the window, and an officer asked "do you have a license?" When the driver answered yes, the officer said, "ok then, go on" (without ever asking to see the license). As is the norm at pretty much every checkpoint I've ever seen here, they were pulling over almost every van, truck, and motorcycle, and letting all cars pass.

 

It's actually astounding to me that they ticketed as many people as they claim, since I don't even know they could fine someone for driving the wrong way unless that driver literally drove through their tent and knocked over the tables.

Most of which could be eradicated using known methods...

but then fines wouldn't be paid..

Oh !  They certainly have the manpower.

There are around 235,000 active serving Police Officers in Thailand.

Added to this is the massive number of " Assistants and helpers " they need

The problem is getting them off their A@@@S to do any work.
