ill promise not to infect you and wear a mask, is that ok by you

No need to be sarky. What I asked was the reason masks were introduced together with social distancing.

As far as I know people are still required by law to wear masks.

Exceptions are when people eat and drink and then they still have to wear their mask when they stand up from the table.

Some tourists seem to ignore the rules.

Just in general it might be good for you to know that even before it was required by law most people were wearing masks. Most people, and especially Thais, wear the masks to protect others and themselves. They do it because they want to wear them and (mostly) not because they have to.

So if you want to be seen in a good light by Thai people I recommend you wear the mask all the time. People appreciate that.

That's about it.

At the moment if you went wandering around without a mask in many places in the North East you'll be told to put one on. You'll definitely get the evil eye.

Probably in Bangkok you might get punched if you don't despite the loosening up of the laws.

I think that is very unlikely. And for tourists in tourist areas: The locals see right away that they are tourists and we all don't have much expectations about their behavior.

Mask rules:

Outside it is a fashion accessory for around your elbow.

On your bike, it must be under your chin.

In mall, gently place it just under your nose.

Or...keep a french frie in your mouth at all times.  it is well known eating keeps covid away 100 and no mask required.

Yep or a Magic Tea, Magic Coffee, Magic Water! Somehow they all magically protect everyone in the vicinity! :cheesy:

It's all for show...and all so silly.

I don't know about the rest of the country but in Hat Yai it's 100% compliance, folks might not wear a crash hat on a motorbike but they'll certainly be wearing a mask. I'm not sure if it's actually law, but it's defiantly the current recommendation of the MOPH/CCSA that everyone wear a mask in public.

It's not something I have a problem with, and frankly I find the resistance and protests seen in some western countries totally  bemusing.

.

Watched a Thai motor cyclist yesterday . He was wearing a helmet and a mask . I thought that was good until I realised he was texting on his phone whilst doing about 50 kph .

Just came back from a 3,500 km road trip (10 days) from Phuket to northern Thailand and many places in between.
I'd say about 95% of Thai people were wearing masks everywhere we went in rural Thailand (we didn't hit any big cities and didn't stay in any cities bigger than Chumpon)
But back in Phuket now, only about 70% of Thai people wearing them and about 50% of farangs.
Just my observation.

Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration warns "that people might be fined for not wearing a face mask"

Situation normal. It's an election year.

"It's an election year."  Really!! Are the ordinary Thai people going to be allowed to actually vote for politicians instead of soldiers? Or is the unelected (by the Thai people) PM going to resort to some sort of trickery like the last time to stay in office?

Maybe so in Thailand but for reference for those of you who may consider a visa run/visit to Cambodia, the wearing of facemasks is no longer mandatory in public and open spaces. Masks must be worn in closed spaces. Quote:

“First, exempt the duty of wearing a mask throughout the country in public places and open places other than closed places, leaving the people to make their own decisions to wear a mask or not".................

.............the requirement is still in place for closed spaces – i.e. an air-conditioned meeting room or a crowded movie theater."

https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501064074/historic-day-for-cambodia-as-pm-removes-mask-requirement-for-open-spaces/

I have stopped wearing my mask, like many of the locals and foreign travelers, but when I go out, I keep one folded up in my pocket just in case. My regular supermarket, and other businesses in Siem Reap, have now removed the temperature and hand sanitizer machines, also the requirement to wear a mask. So nice to be back to pre-Covid-19 days when one collected a trolley, entered the store without restrictions and completed one's shopping.

Walk around Pattaya any day and I have to say, unfortunately, the people not wearing masks are mostly westerners, or they have them around their wrists as they have to put them on to go into a shopping mall.

Regardless of whether it is the law or not, or your own ideology on mask-wearing, putting one on when outside looks polite.

Not wearing one looks arrogant, is arrogant, and is why Thai people think westerners are arrogant

Arrogance < just better informed. Thais live in a superstitious world full of irrational fear of intangibles. Ghosts, spirits, rain, etc. ????  Actual / real threats like cancer, head trauma, dangerous driving, diabetes etc are totally ignored by a media and Govt fixated on creating fear and conformance. Thais still think the Omicron variant is akin to necrotizing Ebola, <deleted>.

Why would you care what they think? They don't, period.

As I said, arrogant - thank you for proving my point

Would you like it if some Thais came to your country and played loud music all night right next door to you and then said that the local laws don't apply to them? Or drove around ignoring the traffic laws because they act like they are in Thailand

You would be complaining very soon

Um, I complain all the time anyway. ????  If you don't you never get anything.

Just got back from a month in the UK. -No masks, fear-mongering, virtue-signaling sanctimonious prats, etc. so you'll have to excuse me.

Well past time to drop the mask mandates everywhere. Happy to see more and more people (even Thais) not wearing them. Outside I don't wear anymore. Have one with me for a visit to a market or 7-11 or such. Walking outdoors...no more. No way. Never again. Should be optional indoors too. This government and media fueled Stupid-19 covidiocy fear-frenzy has got to end NOW.

Well said - outdoor mask wearing is totally ridiculous - we'll all be eating these things when billions of them get into the oceans then the food chain - the environment was polluted enough without billions and billions of items of PPE getting added to all of our rubbish - I was diving around Koh Samui recently and certainly more masks than marine life

Last week when in a local TOPS store in a mall I witnessed an English speaking Thai national politely ask a farang woman who was holding a mask on her arm why she was not wearing it on her face, “Excuse me…..why aren’t you wearing your mask on your face?”  The westerner immediately set in to an argument with the statement, “ I’m not a sheep like the rest of you people!”  The Thai notified a store security person who approached the woman and asked her to put the mask on.

Moments later the the woman walked up to the Thai national who was now in the checkout lane and began to verbally accost him.  The Thai gave back exactly what he was handed and within thirty seconds the outbursts on both sides became very loud and filled with expletives.  Everyone within earshot…..and that was all who were within a fifteen meter radius…..stopped to watch and listen.  I was by this time in the next lane of cashiers with a front row seat.  Everyone, except this woman, was wearing a mask and the looks in their eyes was universally one of shock and in some cases wide eyed fear.  The Thai was unrelenting.  The farang woman stirred herself into a wild eyed, mouth frothing frenzy.  It wasn’t pretty.

The disturbance eventually ended with the store mananger escorting the farang woman out of the store.

This proved to be an excellently example of “farang arrogance” and I was truly embarrassed ????.

A very similar thing happened in the beginning of the pandemic with my wife in Villa Market, Hua Hin. A big farang female was walking in the store with her mask off. My wife said politely that she had to wear the mask at any times and should not take it off. At that moment I was a few meters away from my wife. This woman started yelling at my wife how she dared to say something to her, it was up to her what she did.

I'm one of those farangs that don't like those farangs much, especially when they are showing their superior attitude towards Thai people and from where I was standing I started shouting (yes I was wrong, but this woman had it coming) at her that she was obliged to wear it in the shop and that she should go back to the country where she came from if she didn't like to comply to the local rules. And that she had no right whatsoever to speak to my wife in that arrogant way.

That woman left the store very fast with the mask on her face.

The OP mentioned parks and was wondering the same.  I run in rural Thailand without a mask but get some stares but most I think don't care all that much.  Could be wrong but at some point it just becomes ridiculous IMO.  I have never passed another pedestrian here within 5 meters in two years while running here but I would guess most the locals think they can catch Covid while passing near me on a motorbike but fortunately don't go agro.

Strange world we live in where science is insignificant vs. being righteous.  As for wearing masks  where you might come withing a few meters of someone, I wear all the time.  Not sure if needed but when in Rome...

It is still difficult to run with a drenched mask but as much as I would like to take it off like some running without it, I am more concern about breaking the law and getting stare by people hence I am still wearing it while I run.

Not sure which planes you have been flying on but they are being worn here in Thailand

Apparently there are some western airlines that do not enforced mask on plane anymore.
