Problem here is, too many newcomers want to impress the ladies.
Here for a few weeks and suddenly, everyone is a crypto millionaire, business man, Dr, own villas, luxury cars etc.
Could you impress a woman, telling her you are a plumber from Liverpool?

Showing off, buying gifts, expensive restaurants.
You get what you are looking for.
The ladies are not stupid and want asap a slice of this "wealth".
Even some guys, renting expensive cars for a few days to drive up to the village, to impress the family.

Too many losers who create a fake image and the girls believe those stories.

Many of us still want a security blanket in case we don't die immediately death comes knocking. I doubt anyone wants to die penniless.

I have a friend in Australia who says he wants to spend his last dollar the day he dies. Good luck with planning that.

My assets are willed to my Thai GF and son, if it helps them enjoy the rest of their lives after I am gone, so much the better.

Couldn't agree with you more. But, there's also a portion of guys who through a lifetime of hard work and frugality have amassed a hefty portfolio. For some guys it goes against nature to spend on a whim. I have family like that, but won't splurge on things like a big TV, fancy car and clothes.

That's surprising. I've known quite a few wealthy Thais and none of them drive old motorbikes. One of them has a new Yamaha Fino which he occasionally uses to get to the office building that he rents out but only because that is 50 metres from his large deatched home. He also has 2 new European Sedans which him and his wife uses for everything else (she wouldn't be seen dead on a motorbike).

It's very unusual for a wealthy Thai to conceal their wealth. I did know a multi-millionaire English guy back in my home town who used to drive around in a 20 year old rusty beaten up Escort van, but even he had a brand new 3 series BMW for the weekends. I've never known it here, in fact most of them are all too happy to tell you if they are from a wealthy family etc.

I've known a couple of Thais who are land rich (30-40 million Baht worth of land in a good location) who appeared poor, but that was because all their money was tied up in the land and they genuinely didn't have a ton of cash lying around.

The family i am talking about (3 brothers, 1 sister) own 200 condo's in BKK, loads of land. Sold a plot in Ratchadapisek area about 10 years ago for just under 400 million thb. Know a couple of other people in the South of Thailand too who don't flash their money. Know quite a few who do show off.

To me the funny part is many of us are getting older and still refuse to live as our means permits. Giving away my money after my death is seeming less and less appropriate. If you have it why not spend it.

Some have kids they want to leave behind secure.

Thai's won't pick up on 'old money' European signals of wealth. Most wealthy Thai's are relatively new money and go for ostentatious shows of wealth, much of the old money too actually. I have had a old money Thai tell me of his yacht club memberships and ownership as a means of introduction - it was his way of helping  me "place" him in the hierarchy.

The guy wearing a heavy gold chain in lower Sukhumvit venues gets it. It is a sign of wealth that the people working there will recognise. I have silk jackets for dating that I wouldn't be seen dead in in UK business circles. The car and the condo name are what higher level Thai's pick up on.

The name given by the, er, "Ladies" of lower Sukhumvit to this type is "Bidnit [business] @rsehole" Talks as above but stays in an 800 baht hotel room.

This is the point about the Heavy THB100k gold chain - she can see that he is worth at least that (as it was spoken to me).

My gf conceal my wealth here in Thailand.

Everything is in her name (farm) except my car and big bikes. I transfer the monthly budget, she take care of everything. My wealth and income is abroad, not in Thailand at all, and I do not wear fancy clothes daily except when traveling, and neither wearing watches or other jewelry. That I keep in my Franz Jager back home. My gf do not know my economic total situation, only my monthly transfers.

Beer Lao wife-beater and shower shoes. simples.

The wife beater needs to be orange or yellow and have stains. And, you should be wearing old baggy cargo shorts.

A fat gut, messy hair, walk like a duck and smell of booze on your breathe; you got it made.

Depending on your country, that is becoming harder with regards to real estate.

Gives you an edge that can be taken off  you and used against  you

Not an issue I've had to deal with. Once I even encountered a rich cheeky Muscovite brat on a baht bus who offered to pay my fare.

so, if you were still in NYC you would be in raggy attire unshaven sitting on a bench in the Upper West Side drooling and mumbling about socialism?

I'm walkin' here!!!!

Actually I could replace my 'wardrobe' w/a $100 worth of new apparel. I own no suits, no long pants, and a fair amount of raggedy T-shirts... I don't think I have purchased anything new in 10 years... I really need to do some shopping...

The best way to conceal your wealth is to walk around with a short, dark skinned tatted up bar girl and move to Issan.

Thank you - you are really scary

Have the proper training years back and also practiced it in real life, there is no way I believe Im capable to handle every situation anymore, and a good advise, always consider your opponent is stronger, faster and more crazy than yourself, you might live longer.

All that SAS, Green Beret & Navy Seal training ... ????

Or just growing up in the hood ...  what up dog ... ????

Easier simply not putting one's self in harm's way.   Guns back there, knives here, and yet to need any.  No worries.  People stressing over their paranoia, not healthy.

I really have no idea what you are talking about - or why you are addressing it to me.

I get it you carry a knife.

You are scary.

You have a rich fantasy  life about military  special  forces.

What has any of this got to do with me.

I only made the common sense comment that any weapon  can be taken off the carrier and used against  them.

Perhaps  if you have  the martial prowess to prevent that 'scenario' you might  not even need to carry a knife.

That's my experience as well. Most wealthy Thais will let you know about their wealth fairly quickly, either by telling you the name of condos/land they own (and how much it cost), the car they drive, some big business they have recently done etc. Often it's not very subtle by European standards.

This talk of Thais owning 200 Condos and hundreds of millions of Baht and still riding around on an old motorbike is the total opposite of what I have found. Their attitude always seems to be "What's the point of being rich if nobody knows I'm rich?". If they can just about afford a Vios they buy a Vios. If they can just about afford a Benz they buy a Benz. Sometimes they can only afford a Vios but buy a Benz anyway. Never have I heard of one being able to afford a Bentley or an Aston Martin yet choosing to ride around on a 15 year old Honda Wave. Never.
