Popular Post webfact Posted June 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 8, 2022 Dismissed former superintendent of Nakhon Sawan police, Thitisan “Joe Ferrari” Uttanaphon and five former subordinates were sentenced to life in prison today (Wednesday), in connection with the death by torture of a drug suspect in their custody at the Muang district police station in August last year. A seventh police officer was given five years and four months, because he was not involved in the fatal torture of the victim. All seven former officers were found guilty of multiple offences by the Central Criminal Court for Corruption and Misconduct Cases this morning, including murder by torture, malfeasance in office and coercion. Thitisanm who confessed to all charges except murder by torture, and the five former subordinates were initially sentenced to death, but this was commuted to life imprisonment, with the court citing their attempts to try to resuscitate the victim, having him taken to hospital, their useful testimonies and their contribution towards the funeral costs and compensation for the victim’s family in mitigation. Popular Post LarrySR Posted June 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 8, 2022 Anything is possible. The Warden will have some 'high earners' under his control. Years ago, there was a story in the Bangkok Post about a Warden releasing the convicts during the day to go to "work" ..., even ordering the guards to loan the prisoners their motorbikes for the commute. 1 3

mikeymike100 Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 In Thailand what exactly does "Life"in prison mean? In the UK its usually 25 years, but could be paroled for good behavior? In the USA its more like 99 years, so it actually means life? 1

(sarcasm alert) Surely understood that an agreed upon early parole is in the works, yet never suggested by the naive crack journalist as to how things really work here within particular circles. Nor explained as to where they might be spending their prison [especially the top dog] time and what special living conditions will be offered. 2
ikke1959 Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 he will get life but probably nothing to dow ith other prisoners to keep him safe and a good life as he has money enough. The costs he had to pay are also too low as he is very wealthy and the total is not even 1 car worth 1 1
Popular Post dinsdale Posted June 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 8, 2022 There's a story elsewhere that goes into the cars he had. Seems he got these as 'rewards' from the customs dept along with a share of the sales of another 363 cars which were auctioned off for around bt1,000,000,000. The country is corrupt top to bottom and the only reason Ferrari is banged up (for now) is someone made a 'mistake' and killed someone otherwise it would be business as usual. 11

The only sentence in the US that acyually means prison until death is "life without parole". Prisoners serving "life sentences" can apply for parole after a few years, 7 years in California. 3 1

Indeed, but in this case the problem really was that someone recorded and released a video of the killing. Otherwise, as I see it, the death itself was possibly no big problem because they could (and did) get the hospital (originally) to cover it all up. 5
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted June 8, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 8, 2022 Rather astonishing news. This kind of thing just deos not happen here. Wonder if they will follow through with the sentence. Or if he will be "mysteriously paroled or pardoned". Or let out after a few years. Police just don't get jail sentences here. Does something smell fishy, or was this just too high profile, to let go? 8

If they are not released on bail (they will then flee Thailand) their names will be on the very next pardon list. If they do go to prison they will spend less then three years inside. champers Posted June 8, 2022 Posted June 8, 2022 The story is one of the headliners on the BBC World News website, so presumably this is international news. One would imagine if there is any jiggerypokery with bail, appeals and escaping over the border that too will make news globally. This fella's crime is getting caught on film. All the rest appears to be standard operating procedure. 1
