500 kilos of marijuana from Laos seized on border - no arrests - now what happens to the weed?

Thai media Naew Na reported that the QRF (Surasak Montree) military forces on the Laos - Thai border in Mukdahan in the NE got a tip about an impending delivery of marijuana on Sunday night.

 

At 11.40 pm in the area of Ban Phai Lom 7-8 men on a long tail boat offloaded 20 sacks of wrapped plastic. 

 

The media said that when the soldiers confronted the gang "they all managed to utilize the dark and their familiarity with the surroundings" and escape back across the Mekong to Laos.

This, ASEAN NOW notes, can be viewed as standard rhetoric that no one really wanted a bust, just the drugs.

 

Which begs the question now that marijuana has been legalized in Thailand.

 

What happens to the haul?

It won't take long for the BIB boys to sell 500 kg of weed, then back to the river to fish for more.

 

The cops will make more providing security to the weed farms and re-selling confiscated weed than they ever made in baksheesh.  It's a win-win for everybody, and high time the Boys in Brown got some love. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys ????

Marijuana is now treated as a market product in Thailand.

So now the crime should be illegal importation (avoiding Thai customs), not illegal drugs. If the 500k is abandoned, it becomes the property of Thailand customs for disposition.

They could test the weed if it is ok for medicinal oil, if not it will be for sale somewhere. and people will be arrested for having weed that has more than the 0.2 % THC what's allowed.

The same that likely has been happening for decades now. It goes to the army and the RTP for distribution and profit. Billions are made from drugs, trafficking and assorted tawdry endeavors, by officials here. Nothing has changed.

I don't understand why so many posters have the idea that it's all legal now, and I'm 100% sure if it's been 'smuggled' over the border the producers are not being careful to ensure the weed being smuggled complies with the maximum legal 'happy component'.

Some people are going to end up in world of hurt if they don't understand what's allowed and what's not allowed.

Some confusion here. The limit is 0.2% llimit snd seemingly applies to extracts, ie sweets, oils, resins etc, not the plant itself. That's not to say there won't be a lot of flipping & flopping when the legislators finally get their act together. For for now  see:

I'll get rid of the stuff, will personally undertake the incineration with my furnace, which is specifically designed for this chore.  I have many years of experience with this sort of thing and can provide references.  I will bring in able sub-contractors to expedite the process.

Thanks for this.  It now makes sense in a way.

CBD concentrates in the US can max out at .03% without being classed as an intoxicant.

If growing and owning as much as you want was ok then I would agree with you, but unless you are a registered producer/thai/over 20 then I wouldn't suggest digging up your rose bushes and growing a few kilos.

Falang goods must be taxed; preferably at a high rate. Marijuana is legal but falang tax must be paid. This 'found' marijuana will most likely be donated to the poor.
