The residence looks pretty new from the Photo, so unless one buys the mature trees and bushes and has them planted it does take a while.  Pinhole cams are very inconspicuous as well and can be added to a server off-site for collecting information and video.

Have a friend who built himself a large western/thai style house on a few rai out in the sticks somewhere near Korat a few years ago. Fence and wall all around but no other security not even cctv. He and his Thai wife also got robbed with a couple of guys coming in. They got tied up on the bed while they robbed the house, no guns involved in this though.

 

Extremely traumatic for them of course and they were not sure whether to sell up or remain, they decided to remain but got themselves a couple of Doberman Pinschers. Never had a problem since and both very happy again.

Lets be honest, all the security aspects are generally aimed at 'opporotunist" type rogues.

These were not opportunists, 4 guys all armed , they were on a mission. Im guessing they already new what where and the layout and no camera etc from info provided. This was planned in my view, even the person staying with them was conveniently absent ?

 

Set up by someone close to them is my suspicion.

Who goes upcountry and flaunts such wealth??????   I once considered building a 100 million dollar mansion in Nan, but after one second I realized why draw all this attention to myself.

In the West people have a 'mi casa es su casa' mentality where everyone is welcome in your home, but in rural Thailand almost nobody actually goes inside anybody else's home unless they are immediate family or life long friends/neighbors. Everyone has a sitting area outside their house where people who visit sit, talk, drink or eat. The house is kind of treated like an inner sanctum.

 

In a spirit of generosity you can indiscriminately open your house to anyone in the village, but you don't know what's going through their mind. What a foreigner can think of as 'meh, nice interior, but nothing to write home about...", to someone living in a tin roof hut, your house might be like walking into Rockefeller's Park Avenue mansion. Their eyes are popping out of their skulls, they become overwhelmed with envy, and cannot control the urge to take what they want. Or they go and gossip about what's inside your house, and someone else starts getting big ideas. I think that's just the reality of village life.

a few years ago I stayed two nights in a place like that. down at the southern end of Muang Chumphorn. mate's wife's dad's place out in the jungle.

 

3 dogs, a shotty and a .357 Magnum was old mate's idea of home security ????

The article had me lost, quick check shows Nong Chim Chayaphum is directly Central Thailand, not North East Thailand............My first thought was "What is a Millionaire doing living in Nakona No_Where.............but it is a very picturescque  area.  Dollar to a donut says it was a jealous family member.    

 

They'll find them since the Thai Police are known to be fond of expensive watches.

U-tube search for "ปล้นบ้าน" or "home robbery" did turn up a couple of similar "home invasion" type robberies over the last several years where: (1) the victims were at home at time of robbery and  4-5 man team used guns or knives to coerce victims. Third video only involved one robber, and not clear if victim was at home at time of robbery. Last video relates to OP story.
