False equivalence. What of the high profile very rich names jailed in USA ? Epstein,Maxwell , CEO of VW etc. You may be able to afford good quality lawyers but they don’t necessarily mean acquittal.

What has this to do with the corruption and total disregard of the value of human life or letter of the law which this case epitomises? Whether he or us would take advantage of the sickness in Thai society that allows this to happen is beside the point. What does matter is that he has mown down a policeman while off his head on stimulants then been allowed to evade the penalties of his actions, and been enabled to do so by the most corrupt of legal and government systems. The fact that Thais are not upset at the way this has played out is also an indictment on them. For a start, they could boycott Red Bull, but I bet every second taxi driver is swilling it down with not a care in the world for the evil creatures that produce the product.

It may all come down to dollars but in Thailand there is a big difference - it's not good lawyers getting this guy off, its corruption and perversion of the law. This 'western countries are no better' excuse for Thailand's failure to apprehend and punish the man is simply nonsense that is dragged out by westerners who have forgotten that a legal system and consequences for the rich still exist back home. At least their cases are fought in court and if they fled overseas, I am sure an Interpol alert would fetch them home rather than being the joke that this one has become.

Although good lawyers can help, they dont always win.

However in a 'real' country he would have been arrested and passport taken.

Then when he obtained a false passport and left, a real country would have Interpol issue a Red notice.

I totally agree with you. I actually did it - here in Thailand (I broke the law but did not hurt anyone).
It cost me TB 1.1 Mio. but I just walked off.

However, in the West, I wouldn't have tried. Great lawyer or not.

In many countries you simply would be tried in court in absentia, if you don't show up you pretty much get convicted. There is no need to let it simply run out of time. Unless of course that was the plan.

with such terrible government and such a sickness in society how can you bear to live here?  If I took such offence at miscarriages of justice involving  people I don't know I would leave tomorrow .  But where would I go ?   its the same everywhere, just that some places are better at hiding it

He hasn't been here.  The mainstream media have nothing to do with it.  Somebody, somewhere, during one of these visits would have snapped a picture of him and leaked it.  He would be seen in a club, a bar, somewhere.  They wouldn't send it to the Bangkok Post.

It's impossible he could be here and absolutely not one image has surfaced.  Plus if his statute of limitations only has five years left why would he take the risk of trying to enter?

I am not saying he isn't living with impunity - he is.  He just isn't doing it in Thailand.

I understand that your pride for a small part (justice system) of your wonderful country was hurt. I respect your feelings!

You are, however, defending a disgusting Thai legal system which is undefendable (I experienced that myself).
And NO, in the West, when caught and exposed by a free press and an independent judiciary, Ministers resign and Presidents are impeached and kicked out of the White House .... etc.
Justice is far from perfect in the (democratic) West, however, a lot better and safer than in most military dictatorships.

If a defendant deliberately evades his trial by fleeing for many many years, there is no reason to allow him the benefits of the statute of limitations. A legally binding judgment - in the name of the people - should then also be possible in his absence.

 

The actual and original sense of the statute of limitations has been very twisted in Thai case law.
