What did they order and was it overtly expensive ?

Like did they order Lobster , Cod and Cavier ?

Was it a fair price ?

Cannot say without seeing what they ordered .

Any wine or drinks with the meal ?

What's with all the Thai apologists on this Forum?

I know you wouldn't expect the same of Thai tourists in the West.

I'd also add.... how many diners were eating the 11 dishes?

The customer did not evidently ask the price in advance and just ordered.

I thought menu prices had to be stated on the menu?

My next door neighbor kind of looks like this guy. Very affable and friendly, very disarming smile, but crafty as hell.

Edit: But in fairness, those do look like very tasty premium jumbo prawns in the foreground.

First rule in Thailand, esp. at restaurants, don't buy anything where the price isn't clearly shown.

First rule anywhere. There was story in the UK press recently about a couple being charged $500 for 6 oysters and a couple of drinks. They didn't ask the price !!

why?  I'm not a charity and neither are the businesses . If they can't hack it they go bust, that's economics for you. Tourists will make decisions based on value for money, not charitable giving.

The owner said that he advised the group that the dishes would be expensive and that they insisted on ordering... at this point did it not occur to either party to talk numbers or at least get a rough idea of prices? Have to say... sounds very odd!

not if you assume that they are as dumb as a brick, which they clearly are.
