What are the strongest antibiotics available over the counter?

Hi, i have an infection on my foot, nothing serious but want to clear it up as it painful when walking. What are the strongest antibiotics available over the counter at the pharmacy? Any idea of price?

Why not go to your local pharmacy and speak to the pharmacist. They will be the best person to advise you as to what's available over the counter.

A better question is what are you trying to treat? Because the answer to that question will help identify what the best antibiotic for your condition:

 

Amoxicillin

Chephalexin

Chephalexin is probably a better choice in your case because used to treat both skin and bone infections.

 

Both Amox and Cheph are available over the counter in any larger pharmacy and the cost is inconsequetial.  A sheet of 10 capsules for both these drugs should cost you less than 40 baht.  If you buy a carton which will have 25 sheets then it will work out about 15-20 a sheet.

Some people are allergic towards penicillin-like antibiotics such as amoxicillin.

I will assume that the OP is not 7 years old, so he would already know if he is allergic to penicillin.

 

My initial advice holds true, does he have a skin infection and/or bone infection of the foot?

Avoid Cipro if over 60. It can permanently damage tendons. Took it for three days, first one ankle went then the other, luckily not long lasting.

Probably better than some of the "doctors" they have in Sakon Nakhon.

 

Whatever ailments you may have its always amoxicillin and paracetamol at the local clinic here in Sakon Nakhon.

If it's a superficial infection of the skin or the underlying tissue near the skin,  get Augmentin (generic name: Amoxicillin+Clavulanic acid, many brands, AMK is one of the cheaper ones, 10 tablets of 1g about 150 baht).

 

Preferably buy it from a pharmacy with a real pharmacist (not just a salesperson) and show him/her your infection.

 

Otherwise,  see a doctor.

As above. Different antibiotics are effective against different organisms. 

 

The preferred approach is to get a wound culture which will show exactly what organism is responsible and which antibiotics it's sensitive to. With mild superficial  infections of the skin (as opposed to bone or deep tissue)  doctors (especially Thai doctors!) will often initially guess at the organism based on appearance and location of the wound and history of how it occurred. 

 

You have not provided any of that info.  Are you sure it is in fact an infection?

The most sensible advice is to let a doctor examine the infection. It will probably not respond to antibiotics if it is a fungal problem. In fact penicillin based antibiotics if over done can cause a fungal infection like thrush for example.

Different antibiotics treat different types of bacteria.  It’s not a question of the strongest.  But what is appropriate for the specific condition

I recently had a culture done for a skin infection and the doctor then prescribed the weakest antibiotic that showed effective against the bacterium. This is probably the safest approach since the strongest ones often have the most side effects. It also preserves the effectiveness of the strong medications for cases where they are really needed.

A few years back I had an infection in my foot that turned to sepsis.

You could get some Amoxil at the pharmacy, but if it doesn't quickly heal get professional treatment urgently .

Took Norfloxacin another member of the same Fluroquinolone family as Cipro for 7 days, shortly after diagnosed with Peripheral Neuropathy. Maybe coincidental maybe not.

Maybe the infection needs both antibiotics and a very strong disinfectant cream.

Do you have the 6 years of medical training, plus years of specialist training, that a Thai doctor has? if not don't try to treat yourself for something like a foot infection or you may lose your foot.  It is worth it to visit a hospital.

 

If you want to same money ask the doctor what antibiotic to take, how to take it, and for how long then tell him you will get the medication at a local pharmacy, not at the hospital.  The drug cost will be 1/2 or less at a local private pharmacy vs the hospital pharmacy (a government hospital pharmacy may be an exception but probably not).

 

If you insist on being a real Cheap Charley then at least go to a local Clinic with a real doctor.

 

Thai pharmacists are trained to dispense drugs, to recognize and warn about bad drug interactions, and may have some training in what works for simple medical problems but frankly I would never trust one for any medical condition important to me.
