Driver surrenders to police and is fined 5,000 baht by court after nearly killing "Whitey" at NE Big C

Daily News followed up on the case of a female dog name "Jao Khao" (Whitey) that was injured when a black car ran over her near the entrance to Big C in Phetchabun, north eastern Thailand.

 

A royal organisation heard about the incident and the injured animal was taken to Kaset University in Bangkok for treatment. 

 

Pol Capt Sanit Sannichart of Muang district police said that on Wednesday a "Mr A" surrendered to police and was charged with animal cruelty for which there is a possible fine of 40,000 baht and/or two years in prison.

 

The court decided yesterday to fine him 10,000 baht reduced to 5,000 on admission with no jail time.

"A" said he was deeply sorry to animal lovers for what had happened. 

 

He said he had sounded his horn and thought the dog had moved aside. 

 

His animal loving girlfriend had been unable to sleep or have food for days and when he had seen the news he had contemplated suicide. 

 

He consulted with WDT (Watchdog Thailand) before surrendering to police.

Meanwhile the staff at Big C were thrilled that the popular dog was getting great treatment at Kaset and wished her a speedy recovery and return to the store.

meanwhile the "owner" of the dog is  nowhere to be seen for his/her/its irresponsible  beahviour.....next time maybe the dog  will  knock some kid off their bike and kill them.......too many of these dogs in the road, its  plain ridiculous and negligent

And what of the dog owners?  How many of them leave their dogs to wander in the road to cause accidents. One of the biggest dangers to life and limb on Thai roads to motorcyclists is dogs.

i mean, he probably is telling the truth and thought that the dog would have moved but whenever I have been in this situation I have slowed or stopped until I have seen the dog appear either side of the car so I know for sure. Most people with common sense and/or a caring nature would do the same. I don't have a lot of sympathy for him as he should have been more vigilant.

Knock some kid of it's bike by sleeping next to a 'sleeping policeman'? You are really searching deep to find justification for your unnatural hatred.

Dog is NOT on a leash and in the public space, and as such has NO rights and is basically unprotected; free to attack people and lie in the middle of the road. If it gets killed, som nam na. Owner does not take responsibility, so he should shut up.

You're passing the buck. Suggesting Big C should cough up the doe. It doesn't excuse the driver deliberately running over the dog. It's not uncommon here. Puns intended.????

I’m surprised the punishment is that severe in respect to animals.  
I don’t want to see animals harmed.  But if the penalties were more severe for drivers running red lights and not stopping in crosswalks.  Maybe they will be more inclined to obey the law.  And that is a big maybe.

The driver didn’t ‘deliberately run ver the dog’.... The driver slowed and thought the dog had moved, the dog didn’t move with the inevitable result. 

 

The issue is multifaceted: 

- The driver should have been more careful.

- Big C should not allow animals on its premises. 

- Dogs should never be free to roam the streets (dogs should be owned and restrained or removed).

If this dog was so well known by the Big C employees, they should have made arrangements for the dog to rest and sun bathe in a safer location. Instead they allow the dog to be an annoyance to their customers and put the dog and others in harm's way. The same thing happens at the front door of every 7/11 store. Customers have to walk around these feral dogs and risk either being bitten or falling on slippery tiles and other obstacles outside the front door, and the employees do absolutely nothing about it. It's disgusting!

All 3 are true if you ask me, so let's use the 5K fine money to let those dogs get a final injection too. Nobody is taking them in anyway, else they would not be roaming around the big c, 7/11 and more.

If you sound your horn and the dog doesn't move, run the bloody thing over. It shouldn't be there in the first place. When I was young I had an uncle that swerved to avoid a dog on the road and he accidently ran into a lady pushing a stroller with her young baby in it. Since then if they don't move after I've blasted the horn, bad luck dog.

I always  dress  up in a dog  suit when walking aywhere in Thailand now ....no  probs  just  lie  in the road any place I like, cross where I want watch them all slam the brakes on..works a treat.

Avoid how? The dog is in the middle of the driveway, there is no going around it if it decides not to move. I don't say it should be run over, but what is definitely ridiculous is the way that dogs own the roads in this country. Driving around them is what people do, and it only reinforces the sense of "my road, my home" in the dog.

Also amazing how in case of the dog causing an accident, nobody owns the dog. But if it's the dog being hurt, suddenly half a dozen people appear for compensation.

Yes i agree  too many dogs let loose. but  second biggest danger to life  & limb  must be   99% of Thai drivers
