Teen who killed her alleged rapist ordered to pay his family $150,000

      CNN  —

An Iowa judge’s ruling this week ordering a teenage girl – who was 15 when she killed a man she said raped her multiple times – to pay his family $150,000 in restitution has reignited conversations about what justice looks like for girls and young women who have experienced sexual violence.

Pieper Lewis, who killed her alleged rapist in 2020, received a deferred judgment from Polk County District Judge David Porter after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter and willful injury.

Lewis is just one of several teenagers – often of color – who have been legally penalized or convicted of killing their sex trafficker or assaulter in recent years in the US.

The disgrace here is Iowa law which mandates financial restitution.

The judge himself ruled favorably for the accused where he has the leeway to do so, reducing the custodial sentence by time already held in juvenile detention and commuting the remain to probation with the possibility of the criminal record being wiped clean.

Thousands of people have recognized the injustice this young woman has suffered, her legal fees and the restitution she must now pay have been met by generous donations to the ‘go-fund-me’ appeal set up by her old math teacher to help her.

What needs to change is Iowa’s draconian laws.

I'm a US citizen, and this news, of course, is horrible. However, whether the young girl is guilty of a crime depends on when she killed him. The news article, and none of the reports I've heard on TV, doesn't say.

If she killed him while he was in the act of raping her, or immediately after he raped her, or even if he attempted to rape her or told her he was giving her to a "client," that would be considered self-defense and there would be no crime.

If she killed him the next day, or several days after the rape, that could be considered aggravated manslaughter or justifiable homicide.

If she killed him the next month or year, that could be considered premediated murder.

But, as for the civil penalties, the $150,000, I don't know why that would ever be awarded in the case of the first two timelines.

Killing a rapist is understandable if the forensics find sperm on her. An open and shut case. Key is as mentioned, how long did she plan the killing. In the UK, using more force than needed can lead to prison. The blood money to the rapist's family is positively third world.

Ahh the great USA. A land where rape victims are forced to give birth to their rapists babies. A land where medical practitioners are murdered, bashed, blown up, shot, harassed, threatened and civilly charged for giving care and treatment to women.

Well, it all comes down to how and when she killed him. If she killed him during the rape, it would've been self-defense. If she killed him days, weeks or months after the rape then she killed him extrajudiciously and that's the reason why she was sentenced.

Her rapist had it probably coming/deserved it, but she still didn't have the right to kill him extrajudiciously.

So why the payment to the family?

Because she 'didn't have the right to kill him extrajudiciously' as has been said already.

I asked a question to another poster who failed to explain why the additional monetary penalty. I appreciate the answer, but you don't explain as well.

Because of a victims compensation law, passed by the Iowa State Legislation last year.  Anyone convicted of a felony in which a death occurred has to pay $150,000 to the victims family. The Judge used good judgement in his leniency sentencing the defendant to probation, but he could not vacate the monetary award.

Thanks for the explanation, my question was more 'why this law'. Imo stupid and doesn't seem to make any sense.

Agree with you it looks like the judge applied common sense.

Well, stupid law as already stated, but widespread if one reads the original (well researched) CNN article. Amazing how rape and sex trafficking victims still have to defend themselves and are subject additionally to years behind bars. While if someone shoots an intruder entering their home then it's ok.

Let's not even mention the racial component.

      Alleged.

Definition: "said, without proof, to have taken place or to have a specified illegal or undesirable quality."

So it's all right to kill one's rapist, albeit an alleged and maybe not a real one.

Can I kill my alleged mugger? My alleged housebreaker? My alleged anything? There are a handful of noxious individuals I'd be glad to get rid of. Need the alleging happen beforehand, or can I just go ahead and kill those guys, and take care of the alleging afterwards?

I can see banana republic similarities with Thailand's justice system here.

Absolutely disgusting but as the US has the biggest human trafficking problem in the world it's hardly a surprise, although they still like to get on their high horse and preach to the rest despite not fixing their own backyard, as usual.

Why anyone would listen to the US beggars belief.

I don’t think any rational person hearing the woman’s account of her rapes and abuse, considers her to be making false allegations.

      Certainly the judge did not.

Any judge has to follow the existing law. Even if he and/or many people think that law is incorrect and should be changed. It's the law!

I read another article about this, and it sees that is exactly what happened. The judge had to do this because he had to follow the law. He can't just say: in this case we ignore the law.

Obviously some laws are unfair and should be changed. But until they are changed or canceled, they still exist, and judges have to follow them.

Accident Phuket: Foreign Woman Drowns Just Hours After Arriving on Holiday

Picture courtesy of Khaosod. An incident occurred in Phuket on the evening of 10 June, when a 41-year-old Albanian tourist drowned at Karon Beach less than two hours after arriving on holiday with her husband. Police were called to Chalong Hospital at around 18:00, following reports that a female tourist had been pulled from the sea unconscious and later pronounced dead at the hospital. Police from Karon Police Station, led by Pol. Lt. Jaras Lempan and Pol. Col. Khunadet Na Nongkai, attended. The woman had travelled to Phuket earlier that afternoon with her 43-year-old Egyptian husband. According to police, the couple had checked into a hotel in the Karon area and later headed to the beach for a swim at around 16:00. Just ten minutes after entering the water, the woman disappeared beneath the waves. Lifeguards and rescue teams from the Sam Ao emergency unit managed to locate and retrieve her from the sea. Despite performing CPR at the scene and rushing her to hospital, she was declared dead on arrival. Medical staff later confirmed she had likely died at the beach before emergency intervention. Her devastated husband, dressed only in swimming shorts, was seen weeping beside her body in the hospital’s emergency room. Authorities have since sent the body to Vachira Phuket Hospital for a full post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death. The Albanian embassy has been notified and arrangements will be made for the repatriation of the body for religious rites and funeral proceedings. The couple had reportedly planned to stay in Phuket until 12 June. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-06-11

A Poll - Do you like the Down-Thumb emoji?

Don’t like it as it is overused by the deranged and stalkers. Should probably bring back who is posting them (and possibly take emoji posting rights away from downvote ‘abusers’ 😋), but then you get tit for tat pissing contests because they downvoted me etc etc. Still a believer in just having the + / - and dump the rest. But of course it’s not in the forum owners’ interests since some poor souls serial post for their likes, which in turn generates more content.

California in Uproar as Newsom Condemns Trump’s Troop Deployment as ‘Deranged Fantasy’

California in Uproar as Newsom Condemns Trump’s Troop Deployment as ‘Deranged Fantasy’ President Donald Trump’s controversial decision to deploy thousands of additional troops to Los Angeles has sparked intense backlash from California Governor Gavin Newsom, who decried the move as fulfilling “the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president.” As protests against immigration raids surged for a fourth consecutive day, federal forces were sent into the city in an effort to control unrest that has now spread to at least nine other U.S. cities. According to military sources, 700 U.S. Marines from the 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines based in Twentynine Palms, California, have been stationed in the area. They join a growing National Guard presence that has doubled in size, now numbering around 4,000 troops. Their mission, officials say, is to protect federal property and personnel, including immigration enforcement agents. However, the move has ignited a political firestorm in California, where state officials argue that President Trump bypassed the legal requirement of securing gubernatorial approval before deploying troops. The state government has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, asserting that the troop deployment violates both the U.S. Constitution and the sovereignty of California. “We have not reached the point where local law enforcement has got beyond its means to deal with the situation,” said LA County District Attorney Nathan Hochman during an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today programme. He emphasized that only a “small fraction” of the local population was actively protesting, with an even smaller number involved in criminal acts. Nonetheless, Hochman acknowledged the presence of violence, stating, “Whether it’s burning Waymo vehicles, throwing cinder blocks and bricks at the police, driving a motorcycle into the police, or vandalising – and defacing through graffiti – public and private buildings,” such instances have occurred. Tensions reached a boiling point on Monday evening as hundreds of protesters gathered outside a federal detention center in downtown LA, where undocumented immigrants are being held. Los Angeles police officers responded with stun grenades and gas canisters, while National Guard troops formed a defensive cordon around the building. Among the demonstrators, some hurled objects at law enforcement officers, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. In a further escalation, U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi named a man, Elpidio Reyna, who has been accused of assaulting federal agents by throwing rocks. A search warrant was executed at his home, and Bondi stated that Reyna would be added to America’s “Most Wanted” list. The catalyst for the unrest was a series of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids targeting Latino neighborhoods in Los Angeles. Protests erupted last Friday as news of the raids broke, but the demonstrations have since unraveled into widespread disorder, including freeway blockages, looting, and attacks on self-driving vehicles. The unrest has now reached cities including New York, Philadelphia, Dallas, Austin, and San Francisco. Mexico's foreign affairs office confirmed that at least four Mexican nationals arrested in LA since Friday have already been deported. This adds an international dimension to the crisis, further inflaming tensions between immigrant communities and federal authorities. Although President Trump has not invoked the Insurrection Act—which would authorize troops to engage directly in civilian law enforcement—the deployment is notable for its rarity. The last instance of National Guard troops being sent to a U.S. city without a governor’s approval occurred in 1965. Amid this intensifying clash between federal power and state sovereignty, a CBS News/YouGov poll conducted before the protests revealed a divided nation: 54% of Americans supported Trump’s deportation policy, while 50% approved of his broader immigration approach. Still, Newsom remains defiant, threatening additional legal action against the Marine deployment and vowing to defend the state's constitutional rights. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-06-11
