Almost refused entry at Suvarnabhumi

Entered Thailand today after being out of the country for a month. Flew in on emirates from Dubai on a first class ticket. Went to the fast track line bunch of lady immigration officers working it. Handed my passport over and she flipped through the pages. Said you been in Thailand too long why you here? I said I'm getting married in a week. She said can you prove it. I showed her the receipt from the agent I'm using and the appointment for the district office. She then asked if my future wife is Thai. I said yes. She then said congratulations and stamped me in. I was on a non O visa up until June of this year when I divorced my ex wife. Then I left the country and came back on a visa exempt from June to July then did a 30 day extension and then one covid extension while I was trying to get married to my new wife but the district office wasn't allowing it their excuse was covid and they told me to get an agent if I want to get married.

Was your Non O based on marriage? If so when did it expire?  As far as I know, and Ubonjoe will possibly confirm or debunk this, even though you divorced, your visa was still valid and if it hadn't expired you could have continued using it and not created the situation you describe.

 

I continued using a Non O after a divorce until it expired and never had any problems.

I think she was just curious and wanted a date with someone with 1st class ticket. She felt you're almost trapped, that's why she didn't believe you about the marriage and asked for proofs. Probably she was very upset.

and why in a short timespan from flicking the other one to the curb....possible disaster on the horizon again.  Why do guys rush to get married, unless it is just for the Visa....hmmmm...thoughts to ponder.

The OP was not almost refused entry. The IO asked the usual questions, that's all. Maybe it's the stress of getting the prenupts done?

Your permission of stay ends the day your divorce is finalized.

However immigration is not informed of your divorce so in reality you could stay in Thailand until the expiry of current permit.

An AGENT to get married? The district office cannot refuse a marriage provided paperwork is in order and two witnesses are present. They have no right to demand an 'agent' to take care of this. It's completely outside local government standard operating procedures (yes, they do have them).

some people need an agent to find the toilets! I knew one who used to pay an agent to fill out his 90 day report form- after writing down the info for them to copy onto the form.

As you know, it depends on what the OP meant by Non O. If he had a Non O multiple entry visa, this would remain valid until the visa expires. However, your assumption that he actually meant an extension of stay based on marriage is probably correct and, yes, that ceases to be valid on the day the divorce is processed.

And why not? I pay a legitimate and reliable agent with an excellent reputation to handle ALL my Immigration requirements each year, including visa extension, 90 day report, TM whatevers etc adinfinitum. This reduces my personal interaction with Immigration down to 5 minutes each year when I have my photograph taken. The rest of my retirement is mine to enjoy, free of concern that I might miss an important date, forget to fill out a form properly, have to wait for long periods in Immigration along with the great unwashed masses, have to play thrust and parry with Immi. staff during the annual renewal etc etc etc. The next time I get married I may even consider using an agent for that also, perhaps they can also supply the wife too. ????

Great unwashed masses, how elitist can you get! Last time I did an extension it took 20 minutes and cost 1.900 baht, how much did it cost you? People using agents either have more money than sense or just have no money in the bank.
