UK 220 MPs Demand Keir Starmer Recognise Palestinian Statehood
Over a third of UK MPs are urging Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer to officially recognise a Palestinian state. In a bid to send a "powerful" message and advance the two-state solution, 220 MPs from nine political factions have signed the letter—more than half of them Labour representatives. This movement puts pressure on Starmer following France's recent commitment to recognise Palestinian statehood within months. Sir Keir’s recent interactions with French President Emmanuel Macron and Germany's Friedrich Merz reflect cautious diplomacy. Starmer's statement underlined the fact that recognition must be part of a broader strategy towards a two-state solution. His focus, alongside key international allies, is on establishing enduring peace through practical solutions. Starmer has emphasised the urgency of a ceasefire, which aims to deliver humanitarian support to Palestinians. He stated that recognition might feature in the peace roadmap but insists it must be within a larger framework ensuring long-term stability for both Palestinians and Israelis. On Friday, he pledged to facilitate urgently needed aid and evacuation for children requiring medical help. A joint statement from the UK, France, and Germany did not directly mention statehood but expressed readiness to support a ceasefire and political process. Criticism of the Israeli government was also voiced, citing aid restrictions and the humanitarian plight in Gaza as untenable. The statement reiterated that Hamas must be disarmed and excluded from Gaza’s future. This cross-party letter follows a coalition of 27 countries condemning the dire situation and the restricted aid inflicted on Palestinians. Israel, which controls supply entries to Gaza, refutes allegations of a siege and attributes civilian suffering to Hamas. The Israeli foreign ministry dismissed the coalition’s critique as disconnected and misleading regarding Hamas. Labour MP Sarah Champion, spearheading the letter, argues that recognising Palestine will align with a longstanding cross-party consensus in Parliament. Champion and her colleagues believe British recognition would be a powerful gesture given the UK’s historical ties to the region. The letter includes signatures from various party leaders and MPs, urging the recognition of statehood as a critical step toward peace. Parliament has previously seen motions supporting this stance, notably a 2014 non-binding motion passed with substantial backing, reported BBC. Sceptics warn that without resolving the scope and leadership of a Palestinian state, recognition could remain symbolic. While 139 nations officially acknowledge Palestinian statehood, many Western countries await broader peace agreements before doing so. Recent examples include Spain, Ireland, and Norway, which recognised Palestine, hoping to leverage diplomatic pressure to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza. The United Nations accords limited privileges to Palestinian representatives, and numerous international bodies, such as the Arab League, recognise the territory. Nonetheless, certain quarters argue that a recognition without resolving core issues may not tangibly alter the ground situation. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-07-26 -

Crime Immigration Crackdown: 34 Foreign Workers Arrested in Rayong Industrial Estate Raid
Picture courtesy of พัทยา จุดเกิดเหตุ Tourist Police have raided a construction site in the Nikhom Phatthana Industrial Estate in Rayong Province, arresting 34 foreign nationals for working illegally under the guise of tourism. The operation, led by the Tourist Police Bureau (TPB), uncovered 27 Myanmar nationals and 7 Chinese nationals employed without proper work permits. All were found to be working on valid tourist visas, a clear violation of immigration and labour laws. According to police reports, several of the Chinese workers were receiving salaries directly from Chinese companies while residing and working in Thailand unlawfully. Authorities said there was no evidence that any of those detained held the required documentation for employment in the kingdom. Officers have formally pressed charges against all 34 individuals, who now face prosecution. The TPB stated it would continue to monitor and investigate cases involving foreign nationals exploiting tourist visas for employment, especially in industrial zones. Officials reiterated their warning that using a tourist visa to work in the country is illegal and punishable by fines, imprisonment, deportation and blacklisting. The crackdown forms part of wider efforts to regulate the labour market and curb abuses of the visa system. Adapted by Asean Now พัทยา จุดเกิดเหตุ 2025-07-25 -

Report Venezuelans Freed from El Salvador Mega-Prison Recall 'Hell'
Picture by La Prensa Gráfica via Wikipedia A group of Venezuelans, recently released from El Salvador's notorious prison, describe enduring brutal conditions. Mervin Yamarte, along with three other men from Maracaibo, Venezuela, was falsely accused of gang connections and deported under a controversial US agreement, landing them in the maximum-security Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (Cecot) in El Salvador. They recount months of mistreatment before their release and return to Venezuela last week. The men claim they were subjected to beatings and forced to eat "like animals" at Cecot. The prison, criticised by rights groups for having inhumane conditions, denies such allegations. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele remains firm against these claims, while Venezuela's government vows to investigate alleged abuses, accusing El Salvador of systemic torture. Mervin Yamarte was working in Texas when detained and falsely linked to the Tren de Aragua gang due to his tattoos. He denies any criminal associations, as do his companions. Caracas celebrations marked their return, with their hometown welcoming them with cheers and gifts, symbolising a poignant reunion with family, according to the BBC. Critics argue that the US's invoking of the 1798 Alien Enemies Act to deport alleged Venezuelan gang members escalates tensions and harms innocent individuals. The deportees deny these accusations, but their experience underscores the complexities and humanitarian concerns inherent in such deportation policies. After being released in a prisoner exchange, the men returned to Venezuela and were reunited with their families in an emotional manner. However, the scars of their ordeal remain. Despite claims of adhering to international standards, Cecot faces continuous scrutiny over its treatment of inmates. As the US and El Salvador face criticism, relief permeates through the Venezuelan neighbourhood as the four men finally step out of their nightmares. Meanwhile, international eyes remain on both governments as the saga of deportation, imprisonment, and human rights concerns unfolds. Venezuela continues to press for accountability, yet the broader geopolitical implications of such international agreements are evident. The story is a compelling illustration of the harsh realities faced by migrants amidst ongoing diplomatic exchanges and the tumultuous landscape they navigate. Ultimately, the return of these Venezuelans underscores both the relief and the costs of their journey, a reminder of the personal impacts behind political headlines.
