Thailand and Indonesia could soon become home for some lucky Aussies

Aussies who dream of calling holiday hotspots like Thailand and Indonesia home might soon have their prayers answered as the nations attempt to lure foreigners with an enticing new offer.

In a bid to rebuild its economy, the Thai government has announced it will grant Australian retirees a 10-year visa to relocate - and for a fraction of the price that it would cost on home soil.

Similarly, Indonesia's Second Home Visa program - offering foreigners a five- or 10-year permit to live - comes into effect next month.

 

For some Australians fed up with cost-of-living woes, the timing couldn't be better.

OMG so funny. I first thought $2 for a white color flat (condo). Where is that in Indonesia? May be I will buy a few hundreds. And 200K USD for a Indonesian 10 year visa. If seniors (at least 65 years old) have that kind of money in the USA, he can live in the USA with his monthly SS payment easily. No need to go to Indonesia.

A fraction of nil? A visa is not required to live on home soil.  Perhaps they're talking about the COL.

 

Is this offer just the long-term visa for the wealthy that is already available for all?

Note that the article gives the sum required for Indonesia, but is silent on what Thailand demands.

"Retired Working for You" did an excellent YouTube video on this Long Term Visa. For certain retirees it may make business sense. Personally, I am only interested in Permanent Residencey in order to get away from the Thai immigration and their BS.  Under current regulations I will never qualify for permanent residency as a retiree. To qualify I need to have a work permit and paying taxes for 3 years to be even considered.

In Bali, ability to pay USD 500 rent per month, and spend USD 1500 per month. And the real quirk. Must employ two Indonesians. It used to be one. That is, a maid. A retirement visa in Indonesia is not a new thing. Previously it was a bit more like Thailand where you had to have USD 17,000 in the bank, and then you get a one year visa. No mention in the link of 5 to 10 year visa. For me, I am married to an Indonesian. After 7 years of marriage I have a lifetime visa, although I have to visit immigration every 5 years.

You can buy a house in your name, but the land it sits on is done by a 30 year leasehold which is registered at the Land office. You can then possibly extend another 30 years, but then will someone who is 65 still be around in 30 years. My house and my condo will be passed onto my heirs via a  trust and will,already certified and in file with the proper locals, both here and in the US.

This is nonsense. The headline makes it seem that these are special visas only for Aussies. The guy quoted talks about buying a 3 bed house as if he thinks foreigners are allowed to own land in Thailand. No mention of cost of healthcare vs free govt healthcare in Oz or having to sell up everything at a loss and high tail it back home with nowhere to live there any more for free medical treatment. I have seen this sad scenario unwind for a number of retirees in Thailand. Some had even acquired Thai families they couldn’t get visas to take home and had to abandon.

Appears the OP is talking about the 10 year LTR visa, last time I checked this visa is available to any nationality. And last time I checked, you need an income that would give an exceptionally comfortable retirement back in Australia, or anywhere else in the world.

 

Its quiet simple, give retirees/marriage a pathway to PR and hundreds of thousands will come and stay next week. Let them buy a modest property that cant be flipped or rented out, and we will all buy houses.

 

The Australian media does these beat up stories every couple of years, every time the cost of living rises.

Good luck finding a 47b coffee shop (to sit in) anywhere in BKK, Patts, Phuket etc.

If you re single maybe. But if you take 80000  USD to Australia the Tax office will extort about 20k to 25k which leaves boomboomall for a family of 4. Even in Tasmania.

Chiang Rai has plenty of coffee shops in the 30 - 50 baht range. The places you mention are tourist traps, with prices adjusted accordingly.

AS I understand it, if a foreigner rents a house or condo in Indonesia for a year, they pay the full year's rental up front.

If the maid gets pregnant while employed by the foreigner, more money to be paid as well. Doesn't matter who the father is.

Most retirees dont have a family of 4 living with them, and one would presume by the time you reach a $60kAU net retirement income, you have accumulated a couple of assets like a fully owned home, cars etc, and you have medical coverage.
