Navy Wants To Raise Sunken Warship For Return To Service

THE navy’s committee on salvaging HTMS 442 Sukhothai corvette that sank in the Gulf of Thailand on Dec. 18 is now choosing a company to urgently raise and return the warship to service with the estimated budget of 100 million baht, Naewna newspaper said this evening (Jan. 11).

 

The committee, chaired Adm. Adung Phan-iam, commander of the Thai fleet, would have to follow the procedure and get final approval from the Defence Ministry for the expenditure on salvaging the corvette, which sank to a depth of 50 metres about 19 nautical miles from Bang Saphan district, Prachuap Khiri Khan province

 

There are 12 companies that meet navy’s criteria on raising the warship with the key one being that its condition be maintained so that it could return to service. This means it must not be disassembled or cut up.

If they are smart they will hire a Dutch company. They have all the right gear and could raise up that ship in no time flat. However the contract will most probably go to friends of the friends and will be a debacle.

Would you buy a used car that was submerged in a flood?

Why in gods name would you try to salvage a sunken ship.. just think of all the potential electrical issues for starters.

But only if the RTN promise to keep all the hatches closed during rough seas ....................LOL Do the powers that be understand that the whole vessel will need to be treated and a large percentage of the attributes taken apart and maintained correctly including the pea shooters ..................LOL

Raise the ship, get everything off of it that is able to be repaired, then sell the hull for scrap.

  Who would want to sail in a ship that has sank? What ever flaw the ship had that caused it

to sink, should keep the Navy from wanting this ship back in service.

  Non navy politicians should not be involved with this situation. IMO

It's sitting in around 40 m of water. The pressure at that depth is causing all sorts of irreparable damage to whatever they think is salvageable.

 

I guess there's a Vice Admiral (ret'd) who has a family connection with a local company that just happens to have the unique expertise to carry out this work.

Quite normal for Thais in positions of power to make ludicrous statements based on impossibilities or uninformed assumptions.

Project would be scrapped later on or they will drag it for years and for 10 bln over budget.

Something fundamentally wrong was with this ship if she sunk for no apparent reason. Until they find a cause there is no point restoring her

Given the ship in question had just been recommissioned following a refit the RTN has a lot invested here. I guess the admiral who make the announcement does not realise that treating the vessel like this will void the warrantee on all the shiny new electronics and most other fittings. There were reports of a breached hull in some of the early reports.

 

Might be useful to raise it to determine why it sunk, but another refit???
