Police in California are responding to a shooting that has left several people injured, according to US media reports.

The incident happened in Monterey Park, located about eight miles (13km) east of Los Angeles, after 22:00 local time on Saturday (06:00 GMT on Sunday).

Thousands of people had earlier gathered in the city for the Monterey Park Lunar New Year festival. It is not clear yet how many people were shot or whether anyone has died.

It's still too early to know but this has all the hallmarks of a racially motivated domestic terrorist attack. Indiscriminate shooting, 10 dead, 10 wounded, one critical. Only one readily available gun does that much damage with a kill rate better than 50%..

It will be interesting to hear the full story.  Mostly Asians celebrating in a community that is about 2/3  Asian and the suspected shooter appears to be Asian ...  ???

I'd like a bit more nut-case control.  Society here seems to be going off the deep end these days. As a 14 year old or so kid, I was allowed to take my .22 rifle, with ammo, as carry on luggage on an airplane.  Unaccompanied by an adult, no less.

Police surround white van after California shooting

Driver of white van 'may have shot himself' - report

If you're just joining us, police are hunting the suspect in a shooting that killed 10 people in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles. There is currently a stand-off between police and a white van that police say might be connected to the case.

Eyewitness accounts have said the driver of the parked van, in Torrance, which is south of Monterey Park, appears to be slouched over the wheel without moving.

"As officers gave commands for the occupant to exit the van, they heard and believed the driver may have shot himself,"...

A shooting in a state with among the strictest gun laws in America.  Chance of "a good guy with a gun" being present in California is probably the lowest in America.

Watch the cameras evaporate if the suspect is, indeed, Asian in descent. Or perhaps he will be one of those dreaded "white Asians"...

Interesting that the shooter was apparently Vietnamese while the victims were presumably Chinese. We will find out the motive soon.

Also one of the lowest for gun related deaths as a result. This is an unfortunate incident but the stats tell a different story.

As long as you get politicians saying the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun it will never change. A million mass shootings later that theory isn't working.

Please. It's all about money. The NRA, funded by the gun makers pay the lobbyists to pay the politicians to vote against gun reform. This creates a furor in the public where they fear upcoming restrictions and buy more guns. Money, money, money.

If the solution is that everyone needs to go out armed, even to a new years eve party, why would anyone want to live in such a country?

Why would anyone want to live in such a country?  Maybe you should ask the million people who naturalize every year. Or the 15 million plus who risked their safety to enter the same place illegally.

Just saw the news conference where LA County Sheriff Robert Luna named the suspect.  The weirdest parts of this news conference were when State Senator Rico started talking about 'teachers" and someone in the background was clapping.  How about little respect and consideration for the families of the deceased? Also, too many politicians spoke and this was a waste of time.  The only speakers should have been Sheriff Luna and Monterey Park Police Chief Weise.

Monterey Park is nice small city a few miles of east of downtown Los Angeles. A long time ago I knew a couple of officers from the MPPD.  This is a good department with good officers. Monterey Park along with San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Alhambra all have large Asian populations.

The suspect ended up about 30 miles south of Monterey Park in the city of Torrance (my hometown) where he shot himself after the Torrance Police Department tried to contact him in a Hobby Lobby parking lot.  In terms of the criminal investigation it is pretty much over.

Sheriff Luna did add the weapos that was taken away from the suspect when he tried to shoot at people at another dance studio in neighboring Alhambra "was illegal to possess in California"?  He did not elaborate on this.  It appears suspect Tran had multiple firearms. California and even ithe county of Los Angeles have very strict gun control laws. Some cities in California have banned the sale of firearms. Also, Sheriff Luna stated the suspect did not use an Assault Rifle.

A motive has not been revealed or determined at this time.

Really? The "gun lobby" didn't even make the top twenty lobby groups according to this list.

The NRA spent about $5 million. By contrast the US Chamber of Commerce and US Association of Realtors EACH spent more than $50 million.

This incident is right out of a Hong Kong action movie.

No matter, the ethnic Chinese there take VN names, same as they take Thai names in LOS.  And be assured they maintain that superior attitude.

Also, the guy is old enough to be affected by the VN war.  Who knows what's in his head.

I have had many offers in the past - and still today - to go and work in then US, but going there on a temporary work visa means that I would be in the few classes of people not allowed to buy a weapon for my protection - even if everyone else has them - pause for thought

Weapon used was a semi auto pistol with extended magazine. So the article calls it an assault pistol.

No that's what the police called it, from your same article.

The firearm wrested from the suspect was “a magazine-fed semiautomatic assault pistol” that had “an extended large capacity magazine attached to it,” the sheriff said, adding later that he believed the weapon was illegal to own in the state of California.

Unfortunately, this is just another day in the US. Gun crazies tend to use their precious guns.

The U.S. experienced more than 600 mass shootings in 2022, nearly double the number recorded four years ago when there were 336, according to Washington-based Gun Violence Archive.
