Attention all posters!!

This thread is an excellent demonstration as to why the forum Admin have decided that the laugh reaction is more trouble than it is worth.

Sorry and all that, but if you can't all behave then the toys will be taken away.

I know, you wrote already: "I can EXPLAIN it to you, but I can't UNDERSTAND it for you."

But would you mind trying to explain it. Because personally I just can't see the problem.

Sometimes I laugh because it is a funny joke.

Sometimes I laugh like: Does he really believe that?

And sometimes I laugh because the alternative would be to cry.

Now I also feel like crying about this $#$@ but I still try to laugh about it. Because it is not important.

But I still wonder: What is the problem?

Are there really people out there who are offended if people click on a laugh-icon?

I mean it's not like they are in the middle of the bar and drop their pants and all girls start to laugh. I understand that would be a little embarrassing.

But sitting in front of a computer and getting triggered because others clicked on an icon? Really?

None of the above. The really egregious part is clicking on the notifications list and having to read through the reactions to get to the quotes. Constantly.

I always used it when I found something funny. But never in a sense that I laugh about the comment.

But anyway. I don't expect that everyone always agrees with what I write. This leads to discussions. But I guess this is the purpose of a forum. Perhaps we need an "a-ha" button. for some members...

I think it's been proven that moderation, rather than a free for all, improves member retention.

You have a link for that? 555 Not sure about that, Facebook groups have very little. One group I'm on has zero and works just fine

Who said free for all. not me.

You just want to control things, have it your way and all that.

It's a forum.  it's not yours.

But you and a few others,  don't like the reality of that.

Never. I have only called them trolls because they refuse to provide links to support factual claims, the very definition of trolling.

So refusing to provide links to support factual claims is the very definition of trolling? I thought you said that people laughing at your comments was trolling. So it turns out that anything that offends YOU is trolling.

Sorry, I didn't understand that two different actions could not both be trolling.

It wasn't me who removed the emoticons. I'm not controlling anything.

The occasional one is OK, but there are some posters who go on a mad rampage laughing at all your posts and it becomes annoying to keep receiving numerous  notifications that so and so had laughed at your serious  posts .

You can switch off notifications for reactions. It's universal, you don't have to switch it off for each user.

come on.

don't tell me you don't get that laughing emojis are ridiculing people's opinions.

You need to grow up.

If you disagree with someone's post, then respond to the post and explain why you think your opinion is better.

And back it up with links, preferably.

Today I "argued" with one guy in this forum about drag queen shows for children. He repeatedly asked me to send him a link. I told him: google it, it is easy to find.

It looks like he wasn't able to do that or not willing to do that.

And a little later he tried to explain to me that men in outrageous women's clothing has nothing at all to do with sex and it's just fun for the kids.

That is when I gave up and I just blocked him. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense to try to explain things to other people if they don't want to listen at all. And when I see outrageous comments then I laugh at them. I don't waste my time explaining to people that the earth is not flat.

How can you stop people abusing the laugh emoji though ?

You can't, there are always going to be idiots, it's part of the system. Just ignore 'em or take it as a compliment that they even bothered to read your post..

Assuming you wanted to do something about it, what is the solution? Warnings were insufficient.

I kinda like the idea of posters who have been smilied asking what that poster thought was so funny, that only works though if the post was a serious one. If that second poster also gets a smiliey, that's a basis on which to act, pretty soon people will spot who the trolls are. I've been smilied up the kazoo and I confess to having taken similar retribution on occasion, not often mind you because I think it's a poor mans argument to argue via emoticons.

Are you trying to be clever or annoying ?

Could you state your reasons for posting "555" ?

I could.

That's like if an ugly girl comes to me in the bar and I just ignore her.

And then she asks me: Why don't you want me?

I could tell her that she is ugly and that is why I am not interested. But I am a polite guy and just ignore her.

I leave it up to you to interpret this. Or you can just laugh and ignore it.

Switch the notifications for reactions off. It's easy. And that function exists since many years. I know that because I disabled those notifications years ago.

Yep.

My two satangs:

I'm sure most of us have been on the receiving end of the laughing emoticon at one time or another.

The normal adult reaction when this happens would look something like "I see he dislikes or disagrees with my comment. Oh well; that's fine. You can't please everybody."

As someone already mentioned, if you really believe another forum member is trolling you, then you have the option to put that person on ignore - as opposed to lobbying the admin or the mods for a global restriction (on a completely harmless form of expression) which makes you feel comfortable at the expense of the entire membership.

By disabling the emoticon, the forum is essentially pandering to the immature and the thin-skinned members among us.

Not a good look, IMO.

Maybe I like it when some people get annoyed.

Good, it was being abused to troll members. 99.99% of them weren't in response to a joke or sarcasm.

Agreed, it was horrible and left many users with permanent emotional scarring.

For reasons of safety, Asean Now will soon remove all the reaction emojis and replace them with a single check mark that allows users to acknowledge they have read the post in a non-threatening manner.

I agree completely. Just like others, I have seen posters who try to use Mods as weapons and are frequently successful in having posts removed, that's a sure fire way to make my ignore list and at least two posters are on it for that reason. But then of course, you'll be told that using the ignore list is childish and why should anyone care. Who cares what they say, if it means not having to read idiots posts again, it's worth it.

Because every situation, online or in real life, relates back to a girl in a bar.

Sad someone would complain.  8 miss the good old days and I'm guilty of using the laugh to mean negative.  Now I will use the love emoji to be negative.

Could also use the thumbs up, as it involves a fairly large finger.

I'm glad to see 555 back from the dead.

I self-policed and ONLY used the laughing face when someone was being intentionally funny (and I thought they were funny).  If someone snarked at me and used it, I was good with that.

I passed on such low ball-snarking. All of the time.

And now I regret it.
