Purachai had all the bars close at 12 pm, even in Bangkok. Tumbleweed rolling down Silom and Sukhumvit. And THEN he brought in the 2 to 5 no alcohol sales. So 'Tony' may have been better at industry but none of them know anything about what tourists want and it's not all beer bars and karaoke. They are, after all, just a generation away from the swamp.

Well, maybe 2 generations. But, you make a good point. Thailand was a real backwater just 50 years ago. The development has been very recent.

I was just in Colombia, if Thailand is heading that direction then tourism is a thing of the past.

But, as a politician and a crooked one at that, Tony is just talking smack. Kinda like the YouTube punters. Anything for a click.

He has already scraped a few billion Baht from Thailand and ran. Amazing how it is never enough for these guys.

What do you think will happen then?

under trend growth.. high personal debt loads.. In turn increased income not meeting home balance sheets.. But further reducing global competitiveness.

Under Tacky there was 6 even 8% pa growth, investing in the rural provinces outside of bangkok paid dividends and that in turn allowed consumer spending to advance.. Once that GDP growth stopped (2 - 4% pa growth if lucky !!) the consumer lifestyle funded by credit (and that credit is mostly on depreciating goods unlike western mortgage debt in appreciating assets) and you have hallmarks of a country heading into its second 'lost decade'. The debt loads will be a further brake on consumer spending and domestic economic growth.

Developing world economies can not afford the stagnation of low growth like a developed / old world economy can. Its the classic middle income trap. Thailand is failing to develop its human capital or move into new industries from its classic low / mid range car production (and hard discs.. entire sector fading away).. Etc.. It doesnt make chips, it has little to no tech manufacturing or software trade, it lacks the international language skills of PI or India and its now no longer 'low cost manufacturing' v indonesia / vietnam / etc.. How does Thailand fare v its neighbours over the next decade or two with that recipe ??

Its not that the country implodes its that this miss management is cumulative and loses ground over time. PI had twice the income of Thailand in the 50s.. And lost its way.. In contrast Thailand had a higher income and per capita GDP than S Korea into the mid even late 60s well after Korea had regained its pre war economy was in that position. Look at S Korea and Thailand now almost 40k USD p/c GDP v 7k USD !!

In another segment he said that Thailand was heading the way of Venezuela because the government had been hopeless at balancing the books.

I'm not so sure.  If tourism gets back to normal and the government has money to subsidise everything again, people will probably stop worrying.  The whole democracy thing seemed to go away pretty quickly.

The household debt thing looks a lot more serious.  I wonder if Tony has any plans for that.  Maybe harder to address because he can't blame the government and would actually have to blame the people?  A tricky issue for a populist.

3. He has destroyed tourism. It will likely never recover to a meaningful extent. So many mistakes have been made, so much timidity was shown, and so much sabotage has laid the industry to waste.

I agree with everything you wrote.. I would say though that tourism numbers will rebound just fine, but how much social and economic damage will that come with..

As you say Thailand always 'wants' something but you dont hear what they wish to offer.. 'quality tourism' AKA rich people have a lot of great options, Thailands real market sector is a kind of high volume cheap excitement and more and more cheap arrivals combined with such corruption and mindsets of grab it all now are just trashing every island, every hotspot etc. You want to get 'quality tourists' you need to control rampant over development, have enforced planning rules and environmental policies, have a society that can stop wealthy and connected just doing what they want.. In short provide the connected, clean, quality infrastructure that multi millionaires want if they are going to consider buying and building mega money villas.

You have some good points at times, but this comment is ridiculous. Were you even here 50 years ago, if not, you have no idea.

Taksin, Prayut, Army, Red shirts, Yellow shirts etc, doesn't make any difference....Thailand will continue on its own path (whoever is at the helm in the future), it won't break, it won't have mass unemployment, it will always find ways for major infrastructure...so all you guys with this doomsday outlook shown button up or go home.

Yet it is the speed of the change isnt it..

As I already noted.. Its only a few decades back that Thailand had higher per capita GDP than South Korea.. Look at the two now and tell me Thailand is doing well for its countrymen. If S Korea were magically reset to Thailands per capita prosperity it would legitimately be considered a 'doomsday' for them, that is precisely what Thailand has squandered.

Over time small rates of growth both won and lost compound dramatically and the end result is felt by the population.

Sad to say it but Tony is right.

Thailand is heading for the meat grinder...

Thay have been though the meat grinder, back in 1997 then they borrowed a record amount from then World bank and IMF, it was our Tony that finished paying it back, and in record time.

Then bank lending was 58% of GDP, highest in SE Asia at the time, now its 62%of GDP, about the same, but then inflation was not a problem.

A case of we shall see.

What can anybody expect from a fugitive criminal who doesn't use his real name calls himself Tony Woodsome?

Nuff said.

Is your real name One More Farang, or something completely different?

Tony Woodsome is simply an alias.

In the past, Thailand was once in the ranks of economic development, catching up with the four tigers: Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Prayut has been at the helm since 2014 and has failed to create a positive momentum for the country and its people. On the contrary.

Standstill and regression in all areas:

- Modernization of the school and education system? No

- Excellence in research? No

- Better health care for all Thais? No

- Set up a pension system.for all working Thais? No

- Land reform? No

- Modernization of the authorities? No

- Police reform? No

- Reducing the national debt? No

- Strengthening democracy? No

- Integration of foreigners married to Thais? No

- Investments in future technologies? No

- Water and sewage security? No

- Road safety? No

- Waste management? No

- Flood prevention? No

- Reduction of corruption? No

- Economic growth? No

- Better distribution of income? No

- Transparency in government spending? No

- Reducing air and sea pollution? No

- and much more.

Thailand urgently needs fresh blood with future visions in the leadership. Thailand do not need anymore the old politicians from the past, who only think of their personal enrichment and block any progress just to secure their own position of power

Damn. And Thailand isn't even oil-rich like Venezuela.

Venezuela used to give a payment to every citizen from the oil revenues... that brought in a few from next door. When I first went there Caracas was quite a nice city. Petrol cheap as dirt!
