Will gold shops buy non-Thai 18k gold

So I have this 18k gold chain that I bought years ago in Japan (about 300grams in weight), and I'm getting to an age (maturity?^^) where I no longer have any interest in wearing/keeping any kind of "rob me/look at me" jewlery.

 

Will local gold shops buy this for resale or smelting purposes?

 

At all?

At somewhat of the current market buy/sell market rate?

At a total ripoff rate because a) it's not "Thai" gold, or the preferred 'soft' shiny 24k, and b)white boy tax?

I would guess not. I asked one once what he was looking for on a necklace I (we) offered in exchange he was inspecting carefully. He said the hallmark of one of a  handful of Thai manufacturers, and if he doesn't see that he doesn't deal.

Its not pure gold and has nothing to do with "Thai". I doubt they would touch it and try to lose the superior attitude.

Tried twice with "non-thai" gold in two different cities and they refused to buy it.

Most buy it no problem, but at the 18ct rate not the 24ct rate.

I went through this once in Malaysia.  I was considering buying gold as an investment, that I could cash in anywhere in the region.  One shopkeeper explained a lot of it to me, and I don't recall many details but suffice to say I was not encouraged, and props to the fellow for not trying to pull some stunt on the gwee low (sp?). 

Also had a gold wedding band from the US I had tried to sell off in LOS before this, no one was interested.  One fellow told me out here they like the very yellow-colored stuff.  I guess in Thailand they add something to it specifically for the color.

My wife went to UK and back several times wearing gold also we worn our gold wedding rings nothing ever said.

Thai Jewelry classed gold can be different for reasons of wear. 

 

"Thai gold is generally 23 karat and is stamped with a “965”. This gold is 96.5% pure gold; the other 3.5% of metals are silver and bronze. Some Thai dealers will also sell 22 karat gold, 20 karat gold and 18 karat gold – though 23 karat is by far the most popular with Thai consumers."

I was told by a jeweler in OZ, that they add copper, whereas western gold it is silver.

A friend was able to sell an 18K gold chain to the gold shop at the corner of Sukhumvit 10 with no problem.  He weighed it,  calculated the actual gold content and gave her a very fair price.  This was about 5 years ago.

Thai goldsmiths add silver and bronze and copper is used as well to get colour of golds, there are many variations of gold but most Thais like the bright 23ct one. 

My wife like what she calls old gold because it is of darker colour that is a copper mix. 

Our wedding rings are Thai 18ct.

No, in Thailand they don't add things for the color as it is almost pure gold. They add things in other countries so it is less pure gold.

The jeweler is talking nonsense: Thai gold is famous for its high purity. 23 karat to 24 karat and it's measured by weight in Baht - 15,16 grams - Thailand.se

Gold is very yellow, 14k, and  18k is what has other metals added to make it harder and stronger plus the gold goes farther.

Colour depends on the types and % of alloys used, alloys are also added for hardness and strength.

 

Thai gold is high in gold content at 23 karats, that is why it is quite soft.

 

The western gold is harder 18K 75% gold and 25% alloys.

 

Thai gold is 96.5% gold and 3.5% other alloys

 

eg.

24 kt gold is pure gold.

18 kt gold contains 18 parts gold and 6 parts of another metal(s), making it 75% gold.

14 kt gold contains 14 parts gold and 10 parts of another metal(s), making it 58.3% gold.

12 kt gold contains 12 parts gold and 12 parts of another metal(s), making it 50% gold.

10 kt gold contains 10 parts gold and 14 parts another metal(s), making it 41.7% gold. 10K gold is the minimum karat designation that can still be called gold in the US

Years ago there was a gold buyer who would make the rounds. He bought all gold, price varied as to purity. I recall selling items I no longer wished to keep. A college ring - 10k, a wedding band - 18k, etc. I suspect independent dealers still exist ... no idea how to find them.
