How pedantic are you ?

I'm not sure if these people are described as "pedantic" or another word ?

 

But today I was talking to a ex work colleague who is travelling first time to Indonesia, he was one of those "pedantic /meticulous" types who would go through a checklist meticulously ,for eg at that time I was doing security work and one of the requirements was checking if doors were locked in the evenings,most guards would just tick the box they checked it ,but no not him,he had to walk physically to every door and check it then write the exact times  he checked it etc , 

He would fill the security book up with trivial nonsense that he checked firehouses etc times etc just pedantic ,no one else cared they just ticked it without even checking ,he knew every policy of the large organisation we were protecting.

 

Anyway fast forward today I meet up with him after a few years  he now is early 60's but works as a Parking enforcement officer for the City council and I believe knows every Parking Law there is ,so he would be a right B to deal with 

 

and he has a travel insurance policy book in front of him,this was in a cafe and he is sipping the coffee like it's a taste test with his glasses down around his nose reading the policy book with a pen ,saying this is very interesting,the policy was written  in 2021 

 

He has highlighted paragraphs about the travel insurance policy he intends to take out .

 

He then told me he has read it from front to back , and wanted to tell me there was trickery involved that he found out with this certain one if you don't have a international driver's licence they won't pay out for rental motorbike accidents and went on & on with other paragraphs about the travel insurance industry.

I decided after a few minutes I would excuse myself as I didn't really want to know paragraph 26 about how you need to photocopy 2 statements about lost luggage !

 

Later that afternoon lo & behold I get another pedantic person,  had a lawyer call me over that WhatsApp face to face as I wanted to arrange a Will to be done and he was the cheapest so he is calling from Melbourne to Sydney.

 

I ended up hanging up on the guy because he meticulously or pendanticslly read slowly thru every paragraph of the Will I made , 

 

Are you one of these people who have to read every policy from back to front ?

Or are you one of those annoying people in the workplace who have cross the t's or dot  the eyes 

 

You don't find many of these types around but when you do they are annoying,I remember a few years ago having a Filipino partner who used to keep a big diary she would write down everything in it .

Receipt numbers of bills paid online , and most annoying was her going meticulously thru her payslip every fortnight working out hours she worked and if it's corresponding with her payslip !

So your friend actually did the job he was paid to do, and now he actually reads his travel insurance policy?  And your lawyer, who you're paying to prepare your personal will detailing the disposal of your assets after your demise, is confirming the details of your wishes?

 

I think the word you're looking for is "responsible."

People are well-advised to read and understand an insurance policy before they buy it. It's rather careless not to do so.

This is how I would be and if I had to employ security I would want them to do this. ????‍♂️

You could, but what you would mean is that their actions are pedantic.

 

"You are being pedantic" would be more accurate.

 

"You are a pedant" is directly telling someone what you think they are.

There's nothing wrong with doing the job you are paid to do, and there's nothing wrong with checking you are paid for the work you have done. That's not being pedantic, that is normal. 

 

I can't say I have always read every paragraph of an insurance policy but I have always read work contracts carefully so I know what is expected of me.

He did his job properly.

You and others obviously didn't do that.

And he knows what to expect from the travel insurance.

Other people, probably including you, would just later complain that the insurance didn't pay what you imagined they should pay. Now if you would have read the policy ...

I like the guy already.

Part of being in the military was security. As the Security NCO of many a unit, it was my enjoyment to find people like you that did not do the job and hang them.

 

As to insurance I take it that you do not come here very often nor have noticed the number of Brits that are crying the blues because their insurance does not cover what they THOUGHT it did.

 

As to a will, the fact that your lawyer is doing what you are paying him to do should make you happy.  I am sure while you don't GAFF the people that you leave things to will be very thankful.

I would describe myself as meticulous, it came with my training for my former profession.

Any time I have bought an appliance, car, or enter into a contract, I read all documents front to back. I check my tyre pressures and battery/radiator/brake fluid/windscreen washer fluids once a week. I turn up early for appointments.

 

I've noticed the people who wing it are usually the ones stranded by the road or at an airline counter, whereas it is smooth sailing for fussbudgets like me.

Anyone and everyone has the right to be as meticulous, careful, conscious, and deliberate with their actions and their business, as they please. The real question at the heart of this is, why does it bother you so much? What aspect of it do you find personally offensive, and why? 

 

I tend to double check, and sometimes triple check some stuff. Some would call that pedantic, or unnecessary. It saves me a ton of grief. So, what is that? Careful? We should avoid being cautious and deliberate?

I am pedantic, some would say to the point of OCD Overview - Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) inasmuch as I check contracts, policies, tickets, doors and many other routine items. I'm NOT ashamed of it - I'm actually proud of my attention to detail.

 

If a job is worth doing, it's worth doing properly and thoroughly and it's interesting how often my approach pays off.

The wifes' godfather had a Thai lawyer write up a new Will. Said lawyer provided a copy in Thai and a translation in English. We insisted on getting an independent translation of the Thai version:- It was quite different from the lawyers', he had written himself in for 60% of the estate plus a hefty fee! He stood to make over GB£1,000,000.

I noticed in your first sentence you wrote: "eg". This should be e.g., then later in the same sentence you wrote: "... doors were locked in the evenings,most guards would ...". There needs to be a space after the comma.

Pedantic does not mean the same thing as meticulous. 

I'm being pedantic insisting that you use the correct word. 

Nothing wrong with being pedantic sometimes and definitely nothing wrong with being meticulous, especially if it's your job to ensure doors are properly locked.  You are supposed to check them, even if you are sure they are locked. 

I would have fired your lazy ass if I knew you were just ticking the boxes without actually doing the inspection.

Another conjugation of the word is pedantry - idiomatically, the "splitting of hairs". Possibly arguing a point that does little to change the subject/object of it! For example.

 

"I have 2000 friends on Facebook".

 

Pedant replies, "I happen to know you have only 1998".

 

ie, the pedant makes a point that is not fully denying it but feels the need to refute on the basis of it being incorrect - but in reality of no significance to the original claim that remains valid and unnecessarily requiring correction!

 

I am now being circumloquacious or a perennial sufferer of logorrhea. ( the spellchecker for this word suggested gonorrhea - Ha! ha).
