Social Media
The Dalai Lama has apologised after footage showed him asking a boy if he wanted to suck the Tibetan spiritual leader's tongue. His office said he wanted to apologise to the child and his family "for the hurt his words may have caused". The video also shows the Dalai Lama kissing the child on his lips. "His Holiness often teases people he meets in an innocent and playful way, even in public and before cameras. He regrets the incident," his office said. The footage has sparked widespread criticism. According to the statement, the boy had asked the Dalai Lama if he could give him a hug - this is not visible in the 23-second clip being circulated online. It is not clear when and where the incident took place. Sticking one's tongue out can be a form of greeting in Tibet. The Dalai Lama has been living in exile in India since fleeing Tibet in 1959, following an uprising against Chinese rule there. 3

Popular Post MisterTee
A perverted request if there ever was one. My formerly high estimation of him has sunk by half. Popular Post JonnyF
I saw the footage, it was absolutely disgusting. As was the behaviour of the sycophants in attendance who simply laughed at the lecherous behaviour towards the young boy . If ever there was an incident to cause you to lose faith in humanity, this was it. 4 1 2

Popular Post spidermike007
I can't help but think this whole thing was taken out of context. If he was interested in the cheap thrill of having boy suck his tongue, surely he would have done it is private. And I doubt that would be the case. Some things can't be taken at face value. According to a 2014 BBC article, sticking out your tongue can be considered as rude, but in Tibet, it's a way of greeting. It has been a tradition followed by the Tibetan people since the ninth century, when the region was ruled by Lang Drama, who was known for a black tongue, said the outlet. The Institute of East Asian Studies, UC Berkeley, also mentions this in its 2014 piece. The institute said on its website that sticking out one's tongue is a sign of respect or agreement and was often used as a greeting in traditional Tibetan culture. 2 2 3 2 2

Sticking out one’s tongue vs asking a child to suck it, is totally different. If he does this in front of everyone, behind closed doors it must be worse. Taken out of context? seriously? Look at the number of Catholic priest molesting young kids… being celibate does this to humans and it’s NOT ok. 3 1

However, this guy seems above that kind of nonsense and some might have an ax to grind. Sometimes, rushing to judgment is not wise. 1

Normalizing Paedophilia and passing it off as a cultural indiscretion is deeply disturbing. 94 year olds in Tibet do not ask young boys to kiss their tongue after kissing them. Why would you justify this ? Maori also stick their tongue out as part of a war dance. They don't ask young boys to kiss it. Enabling this behaviour is pretty shocking. Honestly it turns my stomach. 1

That's quite different to putting your hand next to a 12 year old girl's mouth and asking her to suck your fingers, immediately after kissing her. Seriously, stop enabling and justifying this disgusting behaviour. Have you even seen the video?

Out of the closet and in your face. Also into politics and serving on your local school board. Children's book publication in the past twenty years or so tells the story in a very graphic way with not much left to the imagination. 2 3
