A tour bus driver fled the scene after losing control and crashing in Maha Sahakham province in northeast Thailand this morning. One person was killed in the crash and 40 more people were injured.

At 12.05am, officers at Rat Charoen Police Station were informed that a Thai Sriram Company’s tour bus from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok lost control and crashed into a lamppost on Highway 202 near the U-turn in front of Ban Nong Hi village in Mueang Tao subdistrict, Phayakkhaphum Phisai district.

Police rushed to the scene with rescue workers from the Mueang Tao Subdistrict Organisation, the Nadoon Rescue Unit and Phayak Rescue Unit.

Rescue workers helped trapped passengers out of the bus one by one, which was found lying on its side in the ditch in the middle of the highway.

One person died at the scene, later identified as 34 year old Umaporn Khamphapan from Yasathon province.

I will never understand why someone who is put in charge of driving a bus full of travelers, can just up and leave them after that said driver has an accident and many are injured or dead.  Boggles the mind.....yes the post is symbolically rhetorical because we know this happens more often than not.  Sad really.

This would always be headline news as someone died and many more (40) were injured.

There’s still the killed and injured victims.

With the amount of accidents in Thailand each day, with hundreds of injuries and many deaths, it is unlikely all would be covered in the media.

Bad reporting anyway. The Bangkok to Ubon/Ubon to Bangkok bus doesn't go anywhere near Phayakaphum Phisai. It goes along Route 24.

Night buses are dangerous. Lots of drugged up drivers I think. Avoid.

And part of the reason for that is -- the government doesn't effectively enforce rules against excessive, uninterrupted work hours by drivers, and thus the companies don't effectively enforce it either.

Thus you get bus drivers who have been driving too long without enough rest or enough sleep, and often end up taking some form of drugs to stay awake... particular on those long, interprovincial night trips.

Yes.

My partner was, prior to her current role,  an auditor for the commercial claims at Virayah insurance.

A drugged or drink driver may void a company's insurance - so in effect it's a double-edged situation where if the driver is drugged, or drunk, it is possibly an advantage to the bus company if he flees, later gets charged for that offence, and uses the usual 'brake fail' reason.

It's a crooked system through and through.

Red Bull is 10 baht. Why don't they drink 2 red bulls?

Find the animal that did a runner after this accident and charge him with everything you can think of.

Until the companies are made financially liable for the deaths and injuries and have to pay millions in compensation and a law of 10 years imprisonment for leaving the scene when someone dies is introduced, noting will change in this idiotic traffic menallity country

Awareness of responsibility can be learned!

Would it not be wise from first grade elementary school, to instill this in people.

After all you see it not only in traffic but encounter it everywhere in the Thai community.

If you do something to others, no matter what it is, you must be aware that is has consequences.

Kind of like when Thai police do their infamous re-enactments involving the suspects in major crimes, and the surrounding villagers and family members involvved often try to fight their way past police to attack the suspects.

I remember many years ago the police did one of their re-enactments around where Mor Chit BTS station is now, and the crowd there tore him to pieces. Can't remember what he had been arrested more.

Thai Sriram Company’s tour bus from Ubon Ratchathani to Bangkok lost control

No it didn't. And isn't this a normal route with nothing to do with tours? Two errors in one sentence? A Thai journalist I worked with made three errors in his opening paragraph, so probably not unusual.

15 hours ago, it is what it is said:

i love the logic that guys like this don't twig that the bus company will know who was driving. running away is a waste of time and effort.

No it's not

It's easy to disappear..if you are Thai obviously.

..and have IQ above 20.
