In the aftermath of the Songkran celebrations, which concluded on April 15, the number of Covid-19 inpatients and related deaths has seen a significant increase of 150% in just one week.

According to the Department of Disease Control, there were 1,088 Covid inpatients from April 16 to 22, compared to the previous week’s figure of 435. Furthermore, the number of fatalities rose from two to five within the same period.

The increase in cases also extended to inpatients suffering from lung inflammation, with the number rising to 73, up by 143% from the previous week’s 30 cases. Patients requiring ventilator support also saw a notable increment of 84%, rising from 19 to 35 individuals.

Dr Atthapol Kaewsamrit, Deputy Director-General of the Health Department, attributed these worrying figures to the risk of Covid transmissions at events and gatherings that took place during Songkran festivities.

The Department of Disease Control has expressed significant concerns over the more than two million senior citizens still unvaccinated for Covid in the country. Dr Tares Krassanairawiwong, Chief of the Department, emphasised the importance of immediate vaccination for this age group to reduce the risk of severe illness or death from the disease. He cited that out of the five recorded deaths during April 16-22, four were unvaccinated senior citizens.

Well what do they expect, you can't have your your cake and eat it too. It just takes a Songkran to ignite a wildfire in Covid outbreaks.

I wonder how much extremely poor air quality donated to this

Critically not mentioned is specifically the number of covid-19 inpatients ill or dead who were not vaccinated. Saying there are 2 million unvaccinated seniors in Thailand doesn't add much creditability of the byline.

The continued focus on Covid to the virtual exclusion of everything else is idiotic and damaging.

I'm more concerned about dying on the road than Covid.

The data is now well past this nonsense!!! Try looking at the data coming out of Germany, Japan plus a growing number of other countries. One of my big regrets was getting a procedure I new was wrong but did not want to spoil my families holiday. Never again!!!

Can't believe this even makes the news.

5 elderly people die in a week in a country of 70 million.

OK. Rightly or wrongly, they chose not to take a vaccine that's been available now for 3 years.

Only in Thailand, is covid still this kind of news worthy. Only In Thailand, do you feel like the pandemic is still raging.

These articles really, should no longer be published.

You seem to have missed, or decided to ignore, the other part about there also being nearly 1,100 new COVID hospitalizations in the most recent week reported by the Thai government -- a figure that's the highest weekly tally thus far in 2023, and up about 550% in the several weeks since the first week of April.

Among those, dozens are seriously ill with pneumonia type symptoms, and dozens more are unable to breathe and have had to be intubated because of COVID.

Those are the kinds of figures and results that are going to make news anywhere, rightfully so.

Now 278 COVID deaths and 6,571 COVID hospitalizations in Thailand since the start of the year.

But glad to see the Thai MoPH is calling attention again to the COVID vaccinations issue and the problem with large populations of the unvaccinated:

"The Department of Disease Control has expressed significant concerns over the more than two million senior citizens still unvaccinated for Covid in the country. 5 deaths of elderly in a week , 4 unvaccinated ( had 3 years to get it)  -in a country of 70 million ?

Hospitalisations are minuscule proportionately.

The only people who ever seem to think about, or talk about, FEAR in relation to COVID are the predictable COVID deniers, who keep trying to ignore the fact that COVID has claimed 7 million lives "officially" since the start of the pandemic, with numerous estimates that the real number is closer to 15 to 20 million COVID deaths.

The rest of us are just trying to get on with our mostly normal lives, heeding the guidance from public health agencies and experts, and trying to do the smart and prudent things that will minimize our risks of ending up in the hospital or dead, like the unfortunates in the OP here.

I have no COVID fear, only knowledge and awareness.

Misinformation.

Here is the NSW (Australia current advice. Note item 3.

Steps to reduce your COVID risk

To protect yourself and your loved ones:

  1. Stay up to date with recommended COVID-19 vaccinations.
  2. Stay home if you have cold or flu symptoms and get tested.
  3. Wear a mask in crowded, indoor places.
  4. Talk with your doctor now if you are at higher risk of severe illness. You may be eligible for antiviral medicines.
  5. Don't visit people who are at higher risk if you have symptoms or COVID-19.

That's not the issue. Healthy people failing to take precautions puts others at risk. You have no idea who you encounter has diabetes, cancer or any compromised immune system. Not caring about other people is sociopathic narcissism.

Off topic deflection post meant to hijack the OP has been removed.

I guess it’s a long time since you’ve been to NSW, if you had - you’d understand 3. is being followed by maybe 1 in 1000 people in the state.

Same as in Thailand but it still doesn't stop the covid conspiracy theorists from flipping out. You'd think they were being locked in the dungeon in chains over a simple sensible government recommendation which is obviously in line with international recommendations.

Out of "The current population of Thailand is 70,291,278 as of Wednesday, April 26, 2023, based on Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data."

So out of 70,291,270 (plus the tourists) your chances of suffering Covid lung inflammation is .
00010385356771% and of being put on a vent at 0.0000426795484% - but be very, very afraid.

I wonder if the media fear mongering will ever end?  ????

Are Dengue cases hyped?  No.
Are Colds which led to pneumonia hyped. No.
Are influenza cases hyped?  No.
Are road deaths hyped.  Sort of as upwards of 50 people are killed a week and countless more injured.  But is anyone scared?  No.

But week after week the media hypes Covid like its Freddy in Nightmare on Elm Street.  Lung infections up 143%.  Vents up 84%.  What's the media message: "Done let your guard down or Covid is gonna get you for sure!"
Then look at the numbers. Probably not.

I agree with other posters.  Fear-based media like this serves no meaningful purpose other than to yell, "Fire!", in a crowded theater and to stoke needless public fear.
And it's getting old.
