Over nearly 20 years on this forum, whenever I saw the avatar of Ubonjoe, I would never fail to open it, knowing that each and every time, I would learn something.

 

In this often contentious forum, it is gratifying to read on this memorial thread of the universal respect in which Ubonjoe was held.

What tremendously sad news. With his formidable grasp of matters immigration-related across the board, he will truly be a hard act to follow on this forum.

 

Like several others I had noticed that he had apparently gone MIA on here in recent weeks. But I had never suspected until now that it was for a reason which led to his untimely passing.

AseanNow should archive all of his posts into one Immigration Questions And Answers by UbonJoe and index it for easy searching.  Filling his shoes is gonna be tough, so just let his past Immigration posts talk for him from beyond. 
I can't think of a more fitting tribute to him.

Actually, this would be a good use for an AI interface.  Let the AI use all of UbonJoe's replies as the basis for queries, and name it Chat_UJ.  ????

Truly sad news for so many of us.

As with voices on the radio in the past, prior the internet, where I would conjure up a picture of the speaker from his / her voice, so I imagined Ubon Joe, but from his proficient and  prompt, to the point, and knowledgeable replies   . His sheer volume of responses conjured up someone in his 40s to me. A person with experience but still full of energy.

In fact he was much older,

altruistic to the end.

Having lurked in these parts since 2006 myself, the least I can do to recognize Joe's value to the community in general and to me specifically is to make an effort to tap out a tribute to him and his wisdom and clarity of perception -- qualities that lit up an area that can be daunting at best and threatening to people unable to see through smokescreens as easily as he. Requiescat in pace, Ubon Joe.
