Thai's are lactose intolerant.

As a generalisation...cobbler's.

The "study" that most refer to involved 45 people and has sod-all significance.

Plastic 'cheese' is okay to have on a burger, but not for anything else. As for the price of real cheese, yes, it's expensive as are other quality imported foods. You want western standard, you pay a western price. The good thing about Thailand is you have the option of paying that, or 80% less for local produce.

Thanks for that. Been a customer for years. He delivers to us in Phimai every 6 weeks on his way to Khon Kaen. List of delivery destinations are at the top of the page.

I go in person so you need to ask him. He does deliveries but it's a question of where and when. Look up his full stock https://www.nookiesdelights.3baht.net/docs/Nookies Price List.pdf

TBH food is something quite personal, and one person's delicacy might be disgusting to another. Hence, no one should think 'their' taste is superior...

For instance, that very expensive, strong smelling blue cheese (I cant remember the name) is something I wouldn't touch with a barge pole! But for some, it's out of this world!

Gorgonzola, perhaps? My father loved it but it stank out the pantry. This was in the 50s/early 60s when no-one in the UK had a fridge. That put me off it for life. A good strong cheddar suits me.

You should try this one from Italy. Casu Martzu. Live maggot cheese. Delicious.

It has to do with lactose intolerance and the relatively low demand. Real -imported! - cheese is highly taxed like other imported food.

Just look how much you pay here for italien Salami or apples from NZ. Cheese is not different.

BTW: Please don't call this Kraft-crap "cheese". It's junk.

If you want cheese, buy imported from France, Switzerland or Italy.

'...cheese is highly taxed like other imported food...'?!

We are not living in the 70s and 80s where something that is imported necessarily demands a higher price.

The so called 'tax' is an artificial price hike introduced by the Thai government and local sellers.

Thailand is a member of AANZFTA, a free trade zone. All cheese imports from Australia and New Zealand to Thailand has 0% tariffs.

Glaxoklinesmith is one of the largest British pharmaceutical companies with factories in Thailand. It produces in Thailand and then imports back into the UK at low cost. Thailand produces and sells it in country but will charge similar to UK prices despite having no international shipping costs.

Thailand artificially inflates the prices on foreign goods because most foreigners will blindly pay and for some reason do not seem to understand globalization?

There is a reason people are going crazy about Trump's tariffs because the majority of the world has been enjoying free trade for decades. There are no import tariffs on Cheese in Thailand. It's BS!
