Same sex marriage and marriage visa, will it be possible?

As the winner Move Forward Party is promising soon same sex marriage legalization, can we expect that it will open a new way for the marriage visa? ????

In theory yes,in practice, probably not for many years to to be approved, then filter through to the Visa application process.

Nobody said they will, but it will probably carry specific requirements and they have to form a document for approval and then application of the immigration service. That takes time.

First things first.

First the MFP needs to form a government.

Then if you read the fine print the "promise" is before 2028.

That's not very soon.

Then after that if/when it happens they would need to need to make decisions about visa policies.

Heck we don't even know if they will allow same sex marriages between Thais and foreigners. It could be Thai Thai only. Probably not, but can't assume anything.

I don't know if they will make it harder, but TiT, can you see them making it any easier? 

 

What I think will be interesting is the finer details of how it works, by this I mean currently a Foreign Male marrying a Thai Female has very different Immigration obligations/rights than a Foreign Female marrying a Thai Male....

 

My best guess is that they will go down the route of a Foreign/Thai Male-Male or Female-Female marriage would get the same immigration status as is currently afforded Foreign Male + Thai Female, but it would be great to see them leveling the playing field on this at the same time... 

 

No skin in the game as I'm a dyed in the wool Hetro Bachelor & even with any positive Immigration changes can't see that changing, but I do think the current rules are harsh against Foreign males.

 

 

 

 

Apologies if anything in this post offends anybody, certainly not my intention I'm just genuinely curious as to how this will play out & FWIW I've no doubt that it will happen in the next couple of years.

I hope it will be very very soon. 2028 is too far away, as many are waiting already for years. And it has nothing to do with Immigration. Probably it will be implemented there too, but who knows. The most important thing is that there will be a legal status for samesex relationships, to make decisions at illnesses, arrange funerals etc..Suppose a Foreign man can't cremate his wife with he was married for several years, but only her family could do. Would be wondering how the reactions would be.

One might ask why itt should be harder for a foreign man married to a Thai woman than for a foreign woman married to a Thai man. The answer is simple: preconceived notions about gender roles. At some point, these kinds of prejudices may well disappear, but it will likely take time. When my daughter was born, a child born in Thailand to a Thai mother and foreign man was not entitled to Thai nationality. This later changed, but many second and third generation refugees in Thailand still cannot claim their legal rights because of the attitudes and prejudices of officials.

Law/regulatiions allowing same sex marriage has been well mentioned by MF but it will take a while to get the legislation before parliament and approved.

 

And let's be realistic MF have promised many things (good news) but will same sex marriage be their top priority?

MF have also earmarked the inroducton of laws/regulations etc., to actively reduce the massive gap in income, seems to me that's a bigger priority.

This is about Immigration Issues. Not Marriage rights.

Married Women need nothing in the bank.

Married Women can easily get Thai citizenship.

Married Women can easily get PR.

Premature. 

We don't have marriage equality yet.

Even when that eventually happens it isn't a given they will allow Thai to foreign marriages at all.

It's interesting that people seem to be viewing this from a heterocentric POV. Interesting but not surprising.
