The top 10 countries Brits want to spend their retirement in, according to new study

New research has revealed the top 10 countries Brits want to spend their retirement in, with Spain placing first. Equity release specialists at Retirement Solutions analysed the average monthly Google search volume for different terms relating to retiring abroad.

 

They wanted to determine the countries that Brits are most seeking to move to, upon retirement.

2 Australia

3 Portugal

4 Thailand

5 Canada

6 France

7 India

8 New Zealand

9 Italy

10 Greece

 

Top of the list of the countries Brits want to spend their retirement in is Spain with an average monthly search volume of 1,050. There’s plenty of places in Spain that are perfect for retirement, including Alicante which sits on the Costa Blanca; the city has excellent cost of living while also providing plenty of sunshine, with temperatures sitting at around 16C in winter while reaching over 40C in summer.

 

Coming in just below Spain is Australia. The weather in Australia is certainly a big attraction to the country; in a city like Sydney you can still expect a temperature of around 17C in the coldest winter months, so it’s certainly the place to retire if you like to embrace the outdoors.

 

Taking the third spot is Portugal. The Algarve in particular is a relaxing region that boasts many beaches and fantastic restaurants to try, and it has also been recognised as one of the most affordable options for retirees in Europe.

 

Thailand is in fourth place. Chiang Mai, in the northern region, offers breathtaking scenery with many mountains and country roads for peaceful living. Alternatively, Koh Samui is a beautiful island boasting white beaches with a strong sense of community, so it’s the perfect place to retire if you’re keen for a tropical environment.

Friend bought in Spain now can only spend 90 days at most there, if there was a visa I think they would have found one in the last 3 years

4th!  These people, like me, haven't done their homework.  This perfect place to retire freezes your State pension (mine hasn't moved in 15YEARS!)  Chiang Mai is the Lung Cancer Capital of the World.  Koh Samui's strong sense of community means their taxi mafia now rivals Phuket/Pattaya.

Was the same in Thailand until a few years back---just do a U turn boarder crossing, plenty to chose from near Spain.

 

Maybe Spain will open an office to just report in every 90 days like Thailand did ---oh no I forgot about all the posts....thats a really big hassle in peoples lives to have to do that here.

You referred to EU not specifically to Spain.

Portugal is popular as a retirement location for a reason.

A long term visa for Spain is available but has much higher financial requirements.

Seems even higher than here.

Yes. That would be amazing wouldn't it? 

 

We had plans to retire to France.  Had been saving up and looking at properties.  

 

Can't do it now. Stuck here in thailand or go back to UK are our only realistic options.

They can't. Not a snowballs chance. And New Zealand is cold, rainy, and expensive, with a lot of new non-western ethnic migrants, they may as well just move to Scotland.

The fact that your state pension is frozen is hardly Thailand’s fault & whilst I’d admit I didn’t know this until I read it on this forum nor would I have actively sort this information out, the fact is it there are many other countries (e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Canada & India being 4 other counties on the list) where it would also be frozen. 
 

If you don’t like the air in Chiang Mai… Move, Don’t like the Taxi Mafia in Koh Samui (never had a problem there myself)… Move…

Probably because they do not qualify and if they were there when brexit happened they obviously didn't bother to do the paperwork.  If you have the money/income visa's are not a problem in most countries. I have a good friend who has a great retierment in the med (yes eu).

I remember reading that legislation has passed tat eliminates the golden visa program some time this year. 

If that's true they better hurry.
