Zuckerberg: Ten million join Meta's Twitter rival, Threads

CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Meta's new Threads app had 10 million sign-ups in its first seven hours. He described the app as a "friendly" competitor to Twitter, which Elon Musk bought in October. Experts said the posts could attract Twitter users unhappy with recent changes to the platform. Threads allows users to post up to 500 characters and has many Twitter-like features. Zuckerberg has previously said that ultimately "staying platform-friendly" will be key to his success. But Musk replied: "Being attacked by strangers on Twitter is much better than indulging in false happiness that hides pain on Instagram." Asked whether the app would be "bigger than Twitter," Zuckerberg said, "It will take time, but I think there should be a public conversation app for over a billion people." "Twitter had a chance and didn't take it. Hopefully we can do that."

Competitors have criticized the amount of data the app can consume. According to Apple's App Store, this may include health, financial and browsing data related to the user's identity.

Some users are also concerned that you cannot delete your Threads profile without deleting the associated Instagram profile. Meta told the BBC: "Currently, it is not possible to delete a Threads profile without deleting your Instagram account. We are working on resolving this. In the meantime, you can deactivate your Threads profile at any time."

"Deactivating your Threads profile will not deactivate your Instagram account." Opting out means your Threads profile, posts and interactions with other people's posts will not be visible, the company added. Users can download and delete Threads data by visiting their Instagram settings, Meta said. Threads is now available for download in over 100 countries, including the UK, but not yet in the EU for regulatory reasons.

I tried to sign up, but it would not accept my gmail email address, kept asking for my work address.  I don't have one.  But all's well in the end, I've been avoiding the SM sites for years, no need to start in now.

Just curious, what political view(s) does Musk hold that you find "disgusting" and do you even know what Zuckerborgs views are?

I'm surprised that you don't find Elon Musk's political views disgusting. This is from the Wall Street Journal:

"Tesla also has cut prices in China. But on Thursday, the company joined 15 Chinese automakers pledging to avoid abnormal pricing and promote “core socialist values.”

You're not curious.

You know.

Zuck does not project himself politically as Musk does so I don't care.

I'm so happy to support Zuck's efforts to disrupt Musk and his hostile takeover of Twitter.

Just joined Threads.

Actually I really don't know what political views Musk holds that people find "disgusting".   Genuinely curious.  Do you have an example of a "disgusting" political view that he holds?  He has never even voted for Trump.   Is it because he voted for Biden previously, is that what you find disgusting?

I don't use Twitter. Never liked it, and I consider Twitter, Instagram and especially tiktok to be reasons why contemporary popular culture is declining and mankind is getting much dumber. These mediums are dumbing people down to a huge and potentially disastrous degree. Somehow, I consider Facebook to be more useful and less toxic.

I like that Zuck is giving Musk a run for his money. It appears to me that Musk made an enormous mistake in acquiring Twitter, as it was over valued to an enormous degree. Not smart. At all. And Musk is a bizarre and often silly man, who says alot of dumb stuff, and does not appear to be a good manager. Though, there is no doubt he is brilliant, in certain areas.

What I am more interested in seeing is a competitive social media clone to Facebook. I am getting notices of being, "restricted" for breaching "community standards" but am not shown/told what the exact post or comment fell afoul of the algorithm ...

Sad comment. Left = The election decided Joe Biden is elected. no factual evidence of widespread corruption (fact certified by dozens of court cases). Right = The election was stolen, there were severe breaches of in voting. Equal ... BS. One is fact, one is a lie. My vote will go for the facts every time. So ... color me a leftist.

Stephen Colbert once said something to the effect that it's a well-known fact that reality has a liberal bias.

Conservative Twitter Users Rage After 30 Million Add Threads App on Day One

The successful launch of Meta's "Twitter killer" app Threads is not sitting well with some conservative Twitter users who have pledged their allegiance to self-proclaimed "free speech absolutist" Elon Musk...

Almost immediately after Threads started, conservatives loyal to Musk began to complain that they were being "censored" on the rival app, which is linked to Meta's Instagram and adheres to the same moderation policies. Zuckerberg has dubbed it a "friendly public space for conversation."

I'm now even more convinced that you're playing dumb to try to provoke.

Try that out on someone else.

Ok I will just have to presume in that case that you don't actually know what you find "disgusting" about his political views, but you have heard someone else say that his political views are disgusting and therefore you think they are disgusting, even though you don't know what specifically is disgusting about them.

There was no effort to provoke, I was just curious as "disgusting" is quite a strong word to use and I have no idea what he has done or said to invoke the use of such a word.   He is quite left leaning in his political views and voted for Biden previously.
