Tops Mini outlets?

Are Tops taking over the Family Mart outlets?

I have noticed in the last few weeks two new Tops Daily outlets opening. each one replacing a former Family Mart. One in Choengmon and the other on the ring road heading up the hill to Makro, on the corner of Soi Phra Khao?

I asked a gal who worked at a Tops Daily and she said Tops took over every single Family Mart in Thailand. She also said "same store" meaning only the name has changed.

Wonder if the majority of them will continue to serve alcohol between 2pm and 5pm?

Both Top's and Family Mart are owned by Central Group – probably more competitive as Top's than Family Mart, that is way smaller than CP Group's 7-Eleven and seemed to loose the battle on Koh Samui. Family Mart is a franchise from a Japanese company, just as 7-Eleven. Perhaps Central Group is terminating the franchise...????

mom & pop shop will sell you a bottle at 3.00pm

Not many around where I live that are handy, besides mostly they don't keep the beer very well at those shops, often frozen nearly, or the fridge has been turned on and off.

7/11 and the like keep the beer at the perfect temp

Family mart global brand is owned by a Japanese conglomerate, CP holds the master franchise for Thailand.

What about CJ More? They have been opening new stores everywhere here in the NE

CJ and Lotus lek seem to be the common ones around me, CJ being the larger and better store.

No Family mart or even Tops around me.

Never hear of C J More.

CJ around here are like a reasonable sized supermarket.
Have all the grocery stuff, usual dairy, some vegetables and meat.
Also household stuff... actually better than Lotus Lek, also priced better.

I have never seen a CJ More shop here on Samui.

Mind you, when I am driving, I am watching the road, not window shopping.

It's against the law and as they have computerized tills, it would be easy for the authorities to spot.

They could only do it by accepting cash payments.

Some 7/11 will and ring it up later, Tops etc never.

Nope, CP holds the 7-Eleven franchine, Family Mart is held by Central Group...

Thailand[edit]

FamilyMart opened its first store in 1993 and grew to over 1,000 locations within the next decades. In May 2020, FamilyMart transferred their 49% stake of the Thai joint venture to partner Central Group. Despite FamilyMart's effective exit from the venture, they maintained licensing rights and store locations retained the company's name.
